Meet Eli! He is a German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois. He will be joining the pack to begin his journey as a detection dog. I will be partnering with .nw on this dog and a couple of other dogs we have on the horizon. Eli will finish some testing with me and complete the imprinting phase and then will be finished by .nw. After testing, he will either be imprinted on Fi****ms or Explosives & Fi****ms. He will then either be paired with a handler ready to get into the working world, sold to someone in need of a detection dog or kept to share between .nw and I. I will be documenting his journey throughout training and where he ends up!

Intermediate Detection Seminar (October 12,13 and 20)

Description: This seminar is devoted to building the handler’s skills and strengthening the dogs’ ability to hunt. We will focus on teaching the handler how to read when their dog is in odor, recognizing changes of behavior around odor and leash handling skills.

Dates: We will do two days back to back 10/12 and 10/13) with education in the morning and field work in the afternoon. We will then come back a week later for a day (10/20) of practice hides at various locations.

Who should attend: Anyone whose dog is imprinted on odor! This will be open to ALL regardless of if you are a client or not. You can come from the sport background or working side or just for fun!

Price: $300 for a working spot, $100 for an audit spot

Move in date is Wednesday and final touches are being made to the kennel area! We decided to fence off the area behind the kennels for easy in and out access. This area will also be home to a small training area. This area will have the bark chips from the last slide in there. The gate opens to the main backyard area that will be grass. There will be a third fenced area that will be a dog run! Both the inside and outside area will have cameras and will have an alarm system for times when I’m not on the property.

Sweet little Tucker! The first puppy to be a part of the puppy program! We did phase 1 sessions, three of them, focusing on addressing boundaries and setting a foundation at home. Now we are into phase 2 where we are getting out into public to work around more distractions! He is doing awesome and improving so much! And we are so excited to also have him board later this month!

Day 1 for Penny! Her owners reached out initially about reactivity towards people and dogs. In just one session, we were able to move from their backyard to the front yard and begin to implement solid foundations of obedience in addition to creating boundaries around what a walk should look like. It all comes down to how you communicate with the dog and allowing them to build confidence around the stressors.

Exciting times for Beacon K9! With our move coming up next month, we have added a new board and train are! The first picture is the extra large kennel for Hank who will be moving out there almost full time. The second picture is of the remaining 3 kennels. The third picture is of the half bathroom that will be out there and available to clients. The last picture is of my little office area. Each kennel will have the indoor and outdoor space. The kennels will all have 4 foot concrete walls with chain link fence going up the remaining way to the ceiling. Each kennel, both inside and outside, will have a drain to make for easier hosing down and cleaning. To the left of the half bathroom will have a dog wash station so that each dog staying with us will have the opportunity to go home clean! And the final and most important piece is that the building will have a mini split system so that the area is temperature controlled. There will also be cameras inside and a security system installed.

What you see is a picture of Ava getting a bath earlier today. What you don’t see is the progress of building her trust to even be able to get up this point with me. I was able to pick her paws up and wash them. I was able to tell her to get into the bath without her freaking out. I was able to then dry her off, all without a fight. Only possible because we have been building our relationship with trust as the foundation. If I would have tried to give her a bath day one, there would have been a completely different outcome. One of the coolest things about my job is being able to watch the dog start to trust people who work with it.

Neutrality. Charlie came in for reactivity to people and dogs. While he is still improving, his owners put in some serious work to make this possible on session 2! When it comes to client dogs and my own personal dogs, I don’t expect that all dogs love every other dog or people they meet. What I do expect is that they act appropriately which means no lunging, barking, screaming, biting, etc..

Pack Walks were designed for the people struggling to find a controlled group of dogs and owners to continue getting in the necessary reps to make neighborhood walks more enjoyable. One flaw I see with group classes being held at the same location with the same dogs is that the dogs get comfortable. They know the environment and they know the dogs. Our pack walks are constantly changing locations, never going to the same location twice in the same month. The number of dogs varies from 4 to as many as 8. The owners and dogs also vary from walk to walk giving the owner and dog a new environment each time they train.

Day 1 at Beacon K9 is focused on the basics. We cover staying in a sit/down until being released, coming to the owner when called and of course loose leash walking. Obedience is the foundation to well behaved dogs. If your dog won’t listen and obey your basic sit or down command with no distractions, how can you expect them to listen and obey to a “leave it” for something that is more exciting for them? Don’t forget to work on the basics and come back to what build your dog into a confident and obedient dog! recognize sweet Farrah in this picture?!

Eli Update. After my work trip this weekend, I will officially begin the imprinting process with smokeless powder. He is showing me really great things through our fetch sessions and me hiding the ball for him. I love his ability to work on his own and his drive to continue the hunt.

Intermediate detection seminar details! Dates: August 4th and August 18th. 10am-5pm both days. 6 working spots ($300), audit spots ($100). Open to: anyone whose dog is imprinted on odor, anyone who has taken the intro to detection seminar or any of my private session students. If you are interested and don’t fall into one of these categories, reach out and we can set up a session for me to evaluate your dog and see if they are up to the intermediate standards.
