So as you know, we foster mostly kittens. We sometimes do dogs or puppies, but every once in awhile I decide why not! With Avian flu cases on the rise, shelters have been forced to hold onto animals who may have been outside for 4 weeks! These chickens were taken by someone from a supposed drug house when they were just days old. Because we didn't know their history they required a foster home, without other birds, for 4 weeks. I thought, why not! The kids will love watching them grow, and grow they have! Thing 1 and Thing 2 are now available for adoption together. We don't know whether they are males or females, but hope they find the best farm home possible!

Ollie arrived to Canada on April 23 from Louisiana. He was part of a large transport effort in which we took in a handful of dogs. Ollie is approximately 8 years old. He is a very particular little man. As with most of our foster chihuahuas, he has become attached to me. He only wants to be pet when he wants to be pet. He loves human food and is very good at begging for it. Today he was cleared for adoption and already has an application. I hope he finds the perfect home in which he is loved more than anyone can imagine.

This adorable lady came to us 3 weeks ago when a mean raccoon killed the rest of her family minus her brother (who lost his hind legs to the raccoon). Unfortunately, her brother succumbed to his injuries shortly after coming into care. Indigo has been thriving and has such a great personality. I can't wait to see her grown up!

These 2 spent a month with us and were lucky enough to go to the same furever home today! Mario and Luigi came in with severe upper respiratory infections when they were 3.5 weeks old. I'm so happy we got to make a difference in these two kittens lives and allowed them to live their best lives!

Meet Raven and Poe. I received a message on February 28th asking if I would take in a mom chihuahua who just had an emergency csection. Of course the answer was yes!

Raven had 2 VERY large puppies. Unfortunately one of the puppies didnt make it.

Raven has been a very particular lady since the day she arrived. For the first week checking on Poe was difficult. She would lunge at the pen when anyone walked passed or if an animal was near. Sometime you risked getting bit to make sure Poe was doing well. To this day she still doesn't like any of the animals near the pen and is very protective of Poe. She has also become very protective of Scott and loves laying in his lap or in his chest.

Poe has been a big puppy since day one and just continues to thrive. She is now 4 weeks old and is 1/3 of moms weight. She is becoming a very adventurous little lady and very playful. I am so excited to continue to watch her grow!

Today was a hard day. Tulip came to us last week. She was one of the Texas puppies and was the runt of her litter. Unfortunately, a mistake was made and she inhaled some formula unintentionally. She sadly developed aspiration pneumonia and that is when she ended up with us. I began tube feeding her and offering her soaked kibbles. We thought we were making progress, but unfortunately on Tuesday she started to go downhill. She made it clear to me she was tired of fighting and we made the difficult decision to put her to sleep.

This is a reminder to anyone who is caring for neonatal animals. If you aren't sure what you are doing in regards to feeding it is often best not to do anything and to seek help immediately. It is easy to make mistakes which can have very harsh consequences. Never feed an animal human formula or regular milk. Also NEVER feed a cold neonatal. The first thing you should do if you find one is get it on a controlled heat source.

We miss you Tulip.

Well I guess we will start with the ones going up for adoption first. Meet Patty, Burger, Fries and Pop. Patty came into the shelter as a stray with what we pressume was babies of hers. Unfortunately, she was already pregnant again, so I took her home. On March 6th in the evening Patty gave birth to 3 healthy little ones. They will be 3 weeks this Sunday and that means they need to be separated. This means that Burger will have to live on his own and the 3 girls will to home together! If you know someone looking for GPs, tell them to look on our website next week. windsorhumane.org

I'm so sorry that we have been so quiet. Last kitten season wasn't easy. We take the hardest cases and therefore take a lot of hits. I won't lie that I took it hard and really struggled. I'm trying to have a more positive outlook this year and focusing on the good we are able to accomplish. Unfortunately, this one wasn't a good outcome. This little man came to us last night very premature. Lacking most of the fur on his body and very tiny. I managed to keep him alive overnight and was up every couple of hours to feed him. Unfortunately we made the tough decision today to end his suffering and laid him to rest. I know this is just the start of kitten season, but I can't let myself be upset for too long as I have many others already here needing me. We will introduce you to them soon!

Jellybean was brought into a local emergency clinic the day the Texas dogs flew in. Her leg was missing and she had an unfortunate maggot infestation. The person who brought her to the clinic was unable to afford the care she needed so they asked to surrender her over to us. Since we were all very busy with the Texas dogs we asked for the emergency clinic to hold onto her for one more day and they agreed. They got her all cleaned up and wrapped up what was left of her leg. One of the shelter drivers picked her up Monday morning and brought her to our medical department. As soon as I saw her I knew she was coming home with us. Due to the pain meds she had been given, she was quite sedate and had no interest in eating and we were all a little concerned. Monday night as the medication started to wear off, she realized how hungry she was and started devouring food! At this time Jellybean is too small for surgery to repair whatever happened to her, so we will keep her bandaged up and clean, and will get her all the groceries she needs to grow big and strong!

What a day! We were so happy and fortunate to be part of an amazing effort, as we helped receive 84 dogs from Texas and El Paso Animal Services . Thanks to BISSELL Pet Foundation they flew into Windsor Airport, where we helped unload them, send 32 of them off with other rescues throughout Ontario, and bring 52 into Windsor/Essex County Humane Society. From there, every single one of those dogs went to a foster home to have some downtime after such a busy day.
For us, that meant bringing on two new little guys. Jalapeno (black) and Jambalaya (tan) are going to be with us for the next two weeks at least. As usual, we take on animals that need a little bit more care. In this case, Jalapeno has some puncture wounds and other issues with his jaw. Jambalaya has a broken leg, and we will need to decide what the best next step is. Both are very calm, and Jalapeno is incredibly affectionate, while Jambalaya is still quite unsure of us. Time will conquer all, and we cannot wait to share more about their journeys with us.
I was able to snag a couple pictures, and I am sharing them here, but I urge you to go to all of the tagged organizations, see their part of the story, and give them love and support for all of the work they do. We only experience one small part of what everyone goes through, and so many more animals need help. Hopefully we can do this again.

Habanero is going home!!

After surviving a fall off a building, then many weeks with us, we are ecstatic to report that Habanero is going to his forever home today.

This little guy has been a fun addition to our household. The kids were disappointed that he is leaving, but also very excited for him to go to his new home.

Best of luck little one! Hope to see more pictures of you down the road.

Unfortunately, this morning we have to share some sad news.

While at the vet yesterday, we learned that Igloo was very anemic and had very low blood sugar. The outlook was grim, but we committed to a strict feeding schedule of frequent small meals to maintain blood sugar, and hoped he would pull through.

Despite his fighting, between feedings overnight, Igloo passed.

We take on some of the more difficult foster cases for the humane society. With that comes a higher risk of loss. This year has been particularly hard on us, and led to us not posting for a while.

But it is also incredibly important work. It is a miracle that Igloo was even able to get to us to have a chance, and his siblings, including Inuksuk, are part of that success. It is a bittersweet feeling, but we at least know that he left the world feeling loved and cared for. We are thankful for the time we had with him.

Rest easy Igloo. You will be missed

We are super excited to introduce Igloo and Inuksuk. It has been a long time since we had puppy fosters! These two little ones are just so cute, and tired. I think they are just glad to have a place to sleep.
Igloo and Inuksuk come to us from Northern Ontario, where they were when forest fires started burning. While we do not know exactly what happened, we believe this caused mom and her eight puppies to be displaced, and she was so stressed she stopped being able to focus on caring for her pups. All eight puppies were able to be rescued and were taken to a different shelter, but it was a big surprise, and the shelter was simply not prepared to take on that large a load. Fortunately, they were able to contact who took on the task. We jumped at the opportunity to help out, and wound up with these two adorable guys.
The next few days will be all about getting them eating well and seeing if there are any underlying issues we need to sort out. In the meantime, they will be very loved by us and our tiny humans as well.
I know it has been a long time since we posted last. We are sorry that you have missed a number of fosters through our house. We do intend to post much more frequently, and will also address part of our absence in a post coming very soon.

Update time!

Banana has been slowly growing and is very comfortable in her space. She spends time out with everyone else, and though she is much smaller, she takes her space and fits in. We had a concern earlier in the week with her health, but it all seems to be sorted out and she is her normal self again.

We cannot wait to watch her continue to grow and get ready for adoption!

Officially introducing Banana! This little girl came to us Monday night and is settling in nicely. Even though she is just a few weeks old, she already prefers canned food to the bottle. She is ahead of her time.

Banana is special because her rib cage is actually quite flat. For now, we are simply keeping a close eye on things to see how she grows. Her development will dictate whether or not more attention needs to be placed there.

Welcome Banana to the crew!!

This was going to be a sorry for the delay post. We were going to mention that Apple and Acorn were fixed, and going up for adoption. But a slight change of plans, as today they were both adopted!

Tonight will be the last night they spend with us, as they are going to their furever homes tomorrow! It has been a long time coming, but we are glad they are finally fully healthy and ready to go home.

Apple and Acorn, you will be missed, but we are ultimately glad to see you leave!!

This Thursday, we unfortunately had to say goodbye to Bentley.

This post will detail what happened, and may be hard to read for some.

Bentley came to us as a wobbly, energetic kitten. Over the time we had him, he started having seizures, one to two times a day. We had blood work done in hopes of getting answers. Unfortunately, bloodwork came back clean and there was no explanations for the seizures. Bentley went on antibiotics in hopes of cleaning some form of underlying condition up.

Wednesday was a good day, with no seizures during the day, and was pretty calm in demeanor. However, when night came, he had two in four hours. We cleaned him up for overnight.

Thursday morning, it was obvious he had been through at least one seizure overnight due to the state of his pen. Through the morning, he went through a seizure every hour, and spent the rest of his time struggling to stay upright, mostly just lying down and breathing heavily. With no answers, no improvement from antibiotics, and a rapidly decreasing condition, we made the incredibly tough call to euthanize Bentley.

It is never a good day to say goodbye, and this was no exception. Bentley brought us a lot of joy, loved being snuggled and listening to Harry Potter books, and fought so very hard for his time in life. We are so sad that we could not do more for him, but are also glad he no longer needs to feel the pain he did.

RIP Bentley, you will forever be remembered and missed

For the first time officially, we introduce Bentley. You may have noticed him last week in our story.

Bentley has had a rough start to life. When we brought him home the main reason was his wobbly way of walking. This is something that we have seen before, and we had a potential (unconfirmed) diagnosis of cerebral hyperplasia. His first couple of days with us were spent trying to get some good food into him, and making sure he was in a comfy space with little to trip him up.

Over the last couple of days, Bentley has had a few seizures. These episodes are lasting about a minute at a time and, as expected, leave him feeling off for a while afterward. Outside of the episodes, he seems to be doing quite well, but the seizures obviously give us reason for concern.

Bentley has already had his blood sugar tested, and it was slightly elevated when done so. We are awaiting the opportunity to do further bloodwork to help give answers. Depending on the results, he may not stay with us as other rescues or fosters with more availability at home may offer better chances.

Keep little Bentley in your thoughts. We will share answers as soon as we have some! In the meantime, we are looking very forward to snuggling with him more.

Apple was very happy to be done at the vet, and spent most of last night curled up and relaxing on the couch.

Apple's breathing has been a little laboured, so we took her in to get checked out. She is on antibiotics and antivirals to hopefully clear up the underlying issue. She took her first doses like a champ, and we will of course be keeping a very close eye on her.

Give all your best to Apple for her recovery.

You could say our love for foster animals runs deep. However, sometimes I think our kids give us a run for our money. And what would we be if we don't share some of those moments.

Our son gets very excited when we bring home fosters. He loves looking at them in their space, and is obsessed with them when they come out to play. One morning he wanted to play with Acorn. Unfortunately, it was time to go to daycare. What ensued was this face. Needless to say that leaving home that morning was not the easiest thing to do.

Here's to everyone who gives this look when they are told they can't play with kittens whenever they want.

The last few days have been trying for Miss Apple. You may have caught the celebration that she was eating on her own. Alas, that has not been consistent. We have been continuing to provide fluids, and have supplemented her food each of the last two nights. While we do this, we are looking to see if there are any underlying reasons for her difficulties.

Here is hoping for a speedy and non-eventful recovery!

Sometimes fosters come in to our lives and we fail at our duty. By this, we mean that we fail to move them on to furever homes, and instead we keep them for ourselves.

Last week was the anniversary of just such an occasion. Winnie the Pooh Bear (Pooh Bear for short) was found on the side of the 401 at just 8 weeks old. We took her in at a heartbeat and loved having such a cute, bear-looking (hence the name) puppy in our house. We loved doting on her, and were excited for her to go up for adoption soon.

Unfortunately, Pooh Bear developed a bad scratching issue and had a couple vomiting episodes that got quite bad. We worked with the vet at the humane society, running allergy panels and switching to a grain free diet. We had some very scary moments.

Eventually, Pooh Bear got better. However, we had a problem. We had had this adorable puppy for 2 months, not 1 week, and had fallen in love. Furthering that, we had concerns that the lack of knowledge of what exactly caused her allergic episodes, we would worry about them occurring again in another home who might not know how to help.

That concern was a sign to us that we were too attached to this dog to give her up. So Pooh Bear became ours.

It has not always been easy, and even currently she is recovering from a torn cruciate. But her incredible energy and boundless amounts of love have added a wonderful seven years to our crowded.

Happy belated gotcha day Pooh Bear!

Acorn took a spot on the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society page talking about kitten season! Go Acorn!!!

What? It's not kitten season!?! Maybe not, but our first kitten of 2021 is a reminder that kitten season is right around the corner! Acorn and all his friends will need lots of supplies like formula, canned food, and medications. Can you help Acorn and his friends? Please give to help our community's kittens in need: https://windsorhumane.org/donatenow.

P.S. Acorn still needs to grow and get used to people before he will be ready for adoption. When he is ready he will be posted on our adoptables page: https://windsorhumane.org/cats-kittens.

Introducing Apple. Apple came to us Wednesday night, and not in great shape. She came in quite dehydrated and sick. We got right to work making a slurry of formula and intensive care wet food to feed to her. Fortunately, even though Apple is not feeling well, she accepts the food easily.

Things took an odd turn today when one of her teeth actually fell out. Is there a tooth fairy for cats?Especially considering we believe she is younger, this is a concern. We are hoping that our continued care and affection will bring her out of the woods. We are continuing to administer subcutaneous fluids and feeding the slurry mixture. Updates will come as we have them.
