A few weeks ago sponsored rider Charlee Morton-Sharp Equestrian and super mum/groom/driver/cook/care taker/vet correspondent travelled the Nullarbor to Melbourne International 3 Day Event.

Linda and Chop had a whirlwind trip full of laughs, a lot of priceless experience and I'm sure some nervous moments at the finish line. Only a few moments on the phone with me as we all know, horses will be horses!

I am so proud of this talented, funny wonderful human, as is my entire family, WA and the extended equestrian community.

We all love following her riding career!!!!

And we’re off !!!

The first eventing start of the year was at Capel for Future Eventing and was a huge success!

Plenty of great riding, and amazing horses showing off what summer training can do!

Thank you to all the competitors who made it happen and who thanked me throughout !
And thank you to the Capel Horse and Pony Club there is a reason we love coming to Capel!

See you all in a fortnight.

I am the vet on call and on course for the weekend coming up as well.

Show me your favourite competition snap shot!!! The funnier the better. I will buy the winner coffee and make them breakfast on Sunday!!

BIOSECURITY MESSAGE🦠🩺☠️🤒
Unlike FEI competitions there are NO requisites for horse temperature taking prior to EA CCN.
My opinion is that each rider should take their horse’s temperature prior to the event. If that horse has a temperature, and clinical signs of being unwell (lethargy and/or snotty nose and/or loose stools etc) then save it from a weekend of exacerbating the sickness and save the other horses from being exposed to what ever your horse is harbouring!

This is a fantastic summation of loads of new and old research. It has been paraphrased into easy reading terms and paragraphs. Each section is super important, and eloquently describes the best ways in which horses will hopefully go the distance in sport!

Dive into the world of sport horse conditioning with insights from Hilary M. Clayton, renowned veterinarian, researcher, and expert in equine biomechanics and sports medicine.

Foaling is in full swing down here in the South West.

A simple rule to remember for newborn foals is: 1, 2, 3.
1hr : Foal is up within the hour
2hr : Foal should suckle
3hr : The mare should pass the placenta

Delays in these timings and a vet should be called at 2 hours, 4 hours and 6 hours respectively.

Other key points:
- foals do not learn to follow their dams to the exclusion of anything else that moves for a week or two, they identify them by sight and smell.
- meconium should be passed within 24hours.
- it is normal and important for health of foals to demonstrate coprophagy by 7 days of age.

I was lucky enough to judge this award last year. How time seems to have flown.

I really do love the 3 day weekend.

I will not be attending as a veterinarian or rider this year with some big life events taking place and some time out with the family. There are plans to head up to enjoy some cross country on Saturday… watch this space.

Good luck to all horses and riders this weekend.

In the words of Pippa Funnell “Don’t let the fear of failure outweigh the excitement of winning.” But most importantly, enjoy and look after your horses, enjoy the weekend because we’re bloody lucky they allow us to ride them.

Equestricare Equine Sports Therapy is once again proud to sponsor the Best Conditioned award at the second trot up for the TeleMedVET Wooroloo CCI International Three Day

The importance of this award is to encourage people to prepare their horses adequately for a long format event in which the horses need to pass a vet inspection prior to competing then again prior to XC to make sure that the horse is adequately prepared for all three phases of competition.

We think it is important to recognise those riders that go the extra mile in preparing their horses for these events so they are fit and healthy in mind, body & soul!

Conditioning is not just about fitness, just because a horse is fit, does not mean that it is conditioned to do the task required of it. Fitness means “the condition of being physically fit and healthy” but being conditioned is “to bring something into the desired state for use” and involves not only being fit but creating a process whereby a response becomes more frequent or predictable in a given environment as a result of reinforcement. In eventing this involves not only aerobic and anaerobic fitness but muscular conditioning, bone density training, behavioural conditioning as well as making sure that your diet, feet, teeth etc. have the ability to also support the horse.

In order to support your horse through their conditioning, you also need to make sure that their feet are looked after properly with appropriate shoes for all three phases, that their diet is adequate to support them in terms of protein, energy, fats etc. and that they are well muscled and a healthy weight.

The likelihood of injury and health concerns is massively reduced when the horse is fit and conditioned. And if you don’t know where to start there are heaps of resources on the internet about good fitness and conditioning programs for horses at every level.

You can read more about this conditioning here: https://horsemassagecourse.com.au/blog/conditioning-the-event-horse

This has been known for a considerable period of time amongst sport horse vets.
However, cooling horses is now supported by solid research. I would think that this will alleviate all ambiguity and debate amongst various groups, particularly eventers.

A recent study, conducted in Japan, compared various methods for cooling horses after exercise in hot and humid conditions. Thoroughbreds were exercised until their pulmonary artery temperature reached 108°F. The time until the pulmonary artery temperature returned to

Well done to the wonderful committee, club and officials on a great event!

And congratulations to all horses and riders on a fun, eventing-ful, non-eventful fun weekend.

Huge thankyou to Ben Teague at Margaret River Equine Vets for all the support and help at our recent Capel ODE. These events would not be possible without you, and it is greatly appreciated.
