Betsey getting her insulin
When Betsey’s oral insulin didn’t work for her and I was told I’d have to give her shots twice a day, I was devastated just thinking about how terrible it was to have to do that to her. I thought for sure my relationship with her would suffer, she would likely become scared of me, and at first, it was really bad, but we got into a routine and things got better and easier. She’s ok with getting her shots now. Once I put her on the table, she gets down to make it easier for me to grab her skin. I tell her what we’re doing and since I have to keep the needle in her for a bit to be sure she gets the full dose, I sing to her to make that time less tense, then she gets her reward. I wish we didn’t have to do that, but it’s not so bad anymore, we’ve got this! Here’s a video of her diabetes routine.
I have received the results from Betsey’s fructosamine test from last week. It lets us know if Betsey’s blood sugar has been well controlled or not for the past few weeks. Her number was so good that it didn’t even fall within the reference range. So she is doing absolutely awesome! So proud of that girl!
Well it’s been more than a week now that Betsey had her dental with some teeth removed. She seems to be healing fine. On Wednesday she had an appointment with her specialist for her diabetes and that went really well. Her blood sugar was perfect and we’re just waiting for her fructosamine test to come back. She’s been a bit sluggish since her dental (understandably), but she’s beginning to be more active.
This is Reginald showing off how sweet he can be by growling at me as I’m trying to take my fabric from him. Apparently, next time I’m doing some sewing, I won’t take a lunch break.
She just loves her steps. She loves climbing up and down, she plays on them, or often just sits on them. Must be one of her best gifts.
Sorry I once again haven’t posted in awhile, but things have not been good for Betsey. She got diagnosed with diabetes and suffered some life threatening complications some time afterwards. She had to spend 3 days in the emergency care in Salt Lake City. It’s been very hard as she’d never been away from home and was so terribly sick. I made the drive to Salt Lake City every day after work to spend some time with her, to comfort her and let her know I was there for her. My poor girl was shaved in many places to allow for some tests and she had a big bandage around her neck where they put an IV. It was so hard to see her that way. It felt so good to finally take her home after 3 days. I’ve been busy learning how to check her blood glucose, give her insulin, check her urine for ketones, weight her dry food, get her to try some new wet food. She knows when it’s time to be poked and tries to hide. For some time, she was scared of me. Things are finally beginning to get better, yesterday she and I spent some quality time together and she got to finally enjoy a massage (she loves that). All I can do now is pray and hope for the best for that girl.
It’s so good to see my Bobby having fun despite how sick he is. I’m so happy that just like Betsey, he can still enjoy his life.
There were some toys close to her but she decided it was more fun to play with my blanket. I kept putting the blanket on myself and she kept pulling it off.
He just loves that flamingo so much. Too bad I stopped filming too early. Right after I stopped, he managed to flip the flamingo over and it landed on top of him, he seemed to think it was so funny. It made him look just like a big kitten.
Every night around 9:00, Betsey stops whatever she is doing (usually cuddles or playing) and she starts pacing back and forth in the hallway while crying. At that time, she wants her Greenies (her favorite bedtime treat). She never forgets and is usually accurate with the time. Also she makes sure she is loud enough to be heard.
A very Happy birthday to Betsey. She’s enjoying it to the fullest! We’ll open her gifts this weekend to see what she’s getting. She did get her favorite meals today.
Having fun on a Saturday night. Actually in her case it’s almost every night.
I finally caught her in the act. A few days ago I gave her some food and put the lid back on without snapping it as I was going to give her some more. I went to take care of another cat and came back to find the lid gone and her munching as fast as she could. Apparently she was paying attention more than I thought and noticed the lid was on but not snapped on, so she took it off and helped herself to as much food as she could steal.
Time to decorate Miss Betsey’s Christmas tree. She’s definitely enjoying that.
Another rainy day, so Betsey is enjoying her cat spa.
Next to be introduced in Betsey's furry family is Bobby. Bob and his brother were newborn when they were found without a mother. I had just signed up to foster with the rescue group where I had adopted Anastasia when I was asked if I could take in two, 6 weeks old kittens who had been bottle-fed. So I that day instead of coming home with just cat food, I came home with Bob and his brother. Funny enough, Reginald, (the cat who hated cats) fell in love with those 2 tiny fur balls. He took care of them like he was their mother and father, cleaning them, putting them to sleep, playing with them, teaching them things, such as how to climb the Christmas tree! Unfortunately for Reggie, a few months later, Bob's brother got adopted. Reggie took it very hard, he became depressed for a while. So the decision was made to keep Bob. Here is a video of Reggie playing with "his kids" and a picture of Reggie and Bobby today.
Today is the day to celebrate! Betsey has made it to 1 year without a seizure! Way to go Betsey!
It's raining today, so no playing outside, and there's is no escaping that pest of a brother!
COUNTDOWN! Another month without a seizure! One more month and we are going to make it to 1 year seizure free! That treatment is working!
