Breakfast time for mommas and babies. ❤️
First touch for Bay Momma ❤️❤️
We really don’t know if they’re wild or gentle. Right now they’re just scared and we aren’t pushing them.
I promise we’ll name them soon. Just waiting for personalities to start showing.
Typically, we quarantine on the other side of the property in one of the smaller pastures. Away from all the other horses. Buuuut I had a feeling these mommas weren’t going to be super friendly and we needed a way to get our hands on them in a pinch. Babies included!
So on Sunday morning, we juggled all the current horses in the barn into various pastures and other pens away from the barn—giving the newbies access to the entire front paddock with 2 runs and 3 stalls. Despite all the extra space, they stick very close together. Always sharing out of the same trough, same hay pile and taking turns at the waterer.
Thank goodness I planned accordingly because we most definitely have our hands full. Sorting and catching these babies for treating their injuries and monitoring their hydration status is a CHORE! I’ll be thankful for the day that they willingly approach us and seek attention. Until then..we juggle, sort and practice our feral baby catching skills. 😅
Blaze ❤️
We have been trying so hard to get this fella feeling better for several weeks. His feet were a wreck with a lot of underlying issues. We aren’t there yet but we’re making progress. He was so crippled that he couldn’t hardly walk day 1.
When you’re supervising the kids riding one minute and then they have the audacity to leave you in the arena the next…
Peach was NOT pleased and making a ruckus at the gate when I came back out of the barn. Poor donk had to spend 15 minutes locked away. 🫣

Raven making a hot lap in the muddy arena 🤪
This girl is gorgeous, Gaited and waiting for a person of her own. She is slow to trust and Needs a refresher under saddle. Approximately 12 years old.
Hagan ❤️❤️
I think someone stayed up too late scattering buckets around and wrecking the barn aisle 🤣
There’s 7 stalls open. All bedded down with shavings and he’s here…in the middle of the aisle.
He might be slightly spoiled 🤣🤣
I made him get up to eat after this and he wasn’t pleased at all. He much prefers breakfast in bed.

He has a really sweet personality starting to show. It’s hard to see any horse starved but these babies…they really get to me! He’s eating like a champ and so far, no signs of sickness.
Just doing Peach things because the humans are too busy to give her the attention she wants 🤣
I think I need a camera in every stall! I just click on and make sure Momma Harlow still has Total Equine feed in her bucket throughout the day. Her teeth are so bad that she’s struggling to eat hay and thinks soaked feed is unacceptable. She wasn’t a fan of the mare and foal feed either so we’ve compromised. 🤷♀️ Momma gets what Momma wants. I’m just thankful she’s holding that baby in a little longer!!!
We’re going through a bag every other day right now and it’s available on our Chewy wish list if anyone would like to send her one! https://www.chewy.com/g/whiskey-ridge-rescue-inc_b90121367#wish-list&wishlistsortby=DEFAULT
I don’t have answers. I don’t know what her future holds. I’m angry. And hurt. And just disappointed. I drove 6 hours last tonight to the middle of nowhere to get this mare and felt sick the entire trip back. Navigating windy, hilly roads in the dark and praying she was strong enough to handle it. 💔
I’ll never understand how someone can watch a horse live in pain and not intervene. Worse than that—BREED HER. Not once. But twice. Expecting her to carry a foal when she can hardly carry herself. Let her raise that baby only to breed her back. It’s just wrong.
For now—a deeply bedded stall with pain management and high quality feed is the best I can offer. She seen the vet this morning and is expecting a baby within the next 60 days but it’s already pretty high in the canal so realistically..any day. She’s underweight and high risk. There’s so many things that could go wrong but it’s out of my control. It’s a waiting game now. 😕 We will prepare the best we can and be ready to assist when needed.
In the meantime-we need to stock up on mare/foal feed. We Have another load of alfalfa coming today. Lots of shavings and straw. Colostrum and Formula—for worst case scenarios. All the things. If you’re able to give a little, it sure would make a difference!

We haven’t figured out a name yet.
Suggestions?
We could still use help with his vetting and care too. ..

I was watching the Springfield auction last night and almost made it all the way through without bidding. Buuuut then they started running baby after baby after baby in. I’m such sucker for wild, unwanted babies.
I had no idea the little guy had crooked legs—Couldn’t tell from the online feed but all the more reason he needed to come here. They’re home and settling in. Then we will start getting them gentled and ready for vetting and all things.
This was a bit of an unexpected expense and now a much large undertaking than I originally anticipated for. If you’re able to give a little towards their auction fee and upcoming vetting, it sure would be appreciated!
