Genus: Melopsittacus

🦜Also known as Budgerigars, they are the common parakeet or shell parakeet. They are small, long-tailed, seed eating parrots and are the only species in the genus Melopsittacus.
🦜They come in various colours with green being the only natural colour of a budgie.
🦜They are not the smallest parrot but are quite tiny. Most budgies in captivity average between 7 or 8 inches from beak to tip of tail.
🦜They can learn to talk and have a broader vocabulary than larger parrot species such as Macaws and Cockatoos.
🦜With Budgies being small, they are relatively inexpensive to care for and feed. But just a seed diet is not good for this small parrot and could even cause health problems. A diet recommended for a Budgie includes seed, pellets and fresh fruit and Vegetables including leafy greens.
🦜The lifespan of a Budgie in captivity is usually between 5-8 years.
