I was really enthused by tonight's session with this gorgeous pup. Our second session together and she is such a quick learner! What was so great was seeing how the owner's confidence had increased this week. Sometimes the first week is a hit overwhelming, especially for first time owners. In this case I am coaching a mother and daughter training team! I am always happy to teach enthusiastic children since the more on board in the family, the better it is for the dog.

This is Rhubarb. This gorgeous girl is a Patterdale Terrier and nearly 9 months old. I have been working with her owners on a few issues but yesterday we worked on recall with distractions in the park. We started with a training (long) lead but pretty quickly were able to move onto off lead as she learnt so quickly. As with all these things we found the right way pretty quickly to get Rhubarb's attention and for the owners to find the confidence to successfully allow her enough freedom to have fun but all under good control. A very successful session! Well done Rhubarb!!

So yesterday I had a session with beautiful Bessie and her lovely owner Emma. Bessie is a lab x hound mix and is only 12 weeks old. Emma had the right idea to start training as young as possible.

We went through the basics of positive reinforcement and using a clicker or marker word. Bessie is such a clever little sausage she got everything straight away. She learnt a down, rollover, recall in her garden and touch cue. Clever girl!

Particularly because Bessie lives in a busy household with multiple children and other animals it is super important that is able to settle well for rest time and listen to her owners.

Putting the basic foundations firmly in place for training as young as possible will stand anyone in good stead for a happy and fulfilling life for the dog and owner together.
