My phone and I were both covered in flesh bits after this video (it was 32° btw) but I wanted you to see an efficient way to flesh your deer hide. Some taxidermists use a fleshing wheel that also yields amazing results, but I personally enjoy the pressure washing tactic and find it to be very satisfying to watch. After removing as much as possible (and of course cleaning it all up) it will then soak in a tanning solution to "cure" the skin from decaying or rotting.

If trying this at home, be very careful not to get your hand too close to the tip as the pressurized water can cut straight through your own flesh.

Finally!! Some of the items that have been holding me up from completing my pending mounts, have finally arrived. I'll let you guess what you think I'm working on next by the sneak peaks you see here in my work area.

Once I get through these lovelies I have a literal mountain of birds to complete. So excited to show you guys what's next!

Joe, Michael, John, you three are my upcoming priority! Thanks for being patient with me over the holidays!

Won a first place ribbon on my little rat snake at the North Carolina Taxidermy Competition! Now time to switch it over to a cooler habitat and list it for sale.

I'm especially dissatisfied with the baby chick eyes but the face was damaged and hard to repair on such a small scale. I wanted this piece to express a story of a rat snake getting into a chicken coop / nesting box and stealing himself a freshly hatched baby chick.

It was really hard to do that without the "habitat" looking bland and boring or just thrown together so I will definitely be changing that before selling this piece.

I brought this to the South Carolina show and won a second place ribbon. Some things I lost points on:

-The snake was not attached to the habitat. (I didn't want it to be as it won't be the final resting spot but also not going to superglue it to those wood shavings)

-The snake head wasn't shaped perfectly (Probably because it's eating a baby chick and has unhinged jaws at the moment)

-The bottom of the snake shows the sew line (Why are you picking it up and looking at the bottom, you should be judging what you can see)

As you can tell I definitely disagree with the things I lost points on, and the SC show was so unorganized and not classy at all I will not be going back but aside from the rubbish review the actual feedback on the rest of the snake was positive and encouraging to continue on! I watched everyone vote for my snake to be best of category but because they bumped me down to the second place ribbon the only other snake in the building won by default 🙄

Side note: They put the same voting number for two different fish (really good ones) and when it was brought to their attention, they only changed one of the numbers. This means that the artist who kept the original duplicated number instantly inherited ALL of the previous votes. They did not announce nor clarify this to any votes and allowed the voting to continue on even though halfway through, the other artist changed numbers and had to start over with votes. When expressing dissatisfaction with their resolve, their response was "well we can't please everybody so that's how it had to be." They could've made an announcement and/or replaced both numbers for a fair chance.

They also did NOT monitor how many voting slips people were taking and some took several.

So far, this baby chick is the smallest thing I've worked on and it took all of 5 minutes to skin out. It was donated by a local pet store and I've been planning to create a duo piece with a small snake that was also donated by the pet store and I finally got around to doing it! I'm really into reptiles and hope to do much more with them further down the road!

I'm honored to be part of such an amazing group. We always have so much fun, never stop laughing, always challenge one another and build eachother up with encouragement and compliments. I love that we push eachother to perfection. There's always room for improvement, always one more thing you can fix, always one more drink to enjoy the night. My little taxidermy family is wholesome and judgefree and I am blessed to have attended a second VTA competition this year with them.

This has been done for a couple weeks but Benjamin was able to pick up this beauty today! I also received my first ever genuine tip and that was very much appreciated! He was stoked about the quality of the bone cleaning and how white I was able to get it without using any bleach!

Next up is Frisco's Ram (currently tanning and waiting for the form), his pheasant (ready to mount, form just arrived!) And Michael's euro mount (totally clean, waiting for the soak) and his deer mount (currently tanning and waiting for the form!)

I am working on these 4 pieces while also getting my competition mount ready for the upcoming Virginia Taxidermy Show!

Create this Pheasant Trophy Mount with me for Randy and his golden pheasant! I sent him progress pictures and videos throughout the entire process so he could choose the vibrancy of the colors, especially for those feet. This is one of two he submitted to me.
