🔔 your dog needs you to know this 🔔

there is no shame in considering meds to support healthier brain function in dogs who struggle with fear, anxiety and panic disorders. Giving them a chance to feel better is truly the humane thing to do.

An experienced veterinarian is the ONLY person who can recommend a potential protocol. but here are some guidelines for when to consider having that discussion and what questions to ask:

🐾 training issue or behaviour problem? your dog pulling on leash or stealing food off the counter reflects gaps in your training, not a pathological behaviour problem requiring a vet visit.

⛈️ Is it situational? in the case of separation anxiety or storm phobias- meds are almost ALWAYS warranted. Other situation-specific problems such as travel-related anxiety or grooming can be discussed with your vet.

🛠️ it simple management an option? In the case of a dog with separation anxiety, this would mean never leaving them alone. for some that may be do-able. or can your dog’s triggers be easily avoided? in Harry’s case church bells are terrifying but are fairly easy to avoid.

📈What is frequency and intensity of anxious behaviour? if it’s daily or your dog is reduced to trembling or completely shuts down, go see your vet. Now. 🏃‍♀️

🔄 is behaviour modification alone working? Keep in mind that the longer you wait the harder it might be to alter behaviour patterns. early conversation with a behaviour-savvy pro are wise.

🩻 other health issues? specific conditions may rule out certain medications.

💊 ease of dosing? If your dog isn’t easily pilled (or fooled by cheese) a medication that requires 5 pills a day might not be your best option.

💰cost and availability? there may be various options such as generics or online sources.

Don’t wait for things to escalate. Have that conversation early and help your dog live their best life. 🌟

do you know the rule of 3’s?

Expect the following for your newly adopted dog:

➡️ 3 Days: Shock and initial adjustment phase.
➡️ 3 Weeks: Just getting settled.
➡️ 3 Months: Feeling like part of the family and starting to understand house rules.

In my experience, these are very conservative time frames and it can often take longer. Every dog is unique—some display incredible resilience despite terrible pasts, while others may struggle due to reasons we may never fully understand.

This applies even to dogs from breeders who haven’t prepared them for real-life situations.

No matter your dog’s background, giving them time to settle in is key. Focus on building trust and creating a sense of safety.

Of course behaviour is more complex than a few do’s and dont’s so if you need support, this is my specialty- send me a DM 💬 to find out how we can work together.

🗝️ KnowYourDog 🐶🐾

I wish I had a dollar for every pet parent who’s ever told me that they just wished their dog could enjoy the dog park or daycare more 💰

But what they want FOR their dog and what makes their dog happy are often 2 different things entirely.

It’s like someone feeling sorry for me because I’m not out enjoying nightclubs every weekend 🪩👯‍♀️ when the truth is that environment would stress me out. And if you forced me to go anyway, eventually I might snap too.

But in my 20s I lived for those weekends! 🥳

That change is normal and evolving preferences over time is normal for your dog too.

so just because your dog doesn’t want to make friends with every other dog doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with them.

But by forcing those dogs into busy parks or daycares, you can create issues for them which can lead to reactivity and aggression.

And if they struggle to even walk by dogs - they definitely need your help 🛟

progress is never a straight line 🐶📈

often it’s not even as fast as we hope.

Setbacks can be disappointing, and if you’re working with a fearful, anxious or reactive dog- they can be especially discouraging.

BUT they are not only normal, they offer valuable learning opportunities along the way 🌟

But it’s not all about the dogs!

A big part of what I do is provide support at the human end of the leash by:

helping people spot those learning opportunities and move forward stronger than before 🔍

teaching them how to quantify progress and celebrate small wins 🙌

And giving them the tools to kick self-doubt to the curb 👊

How to Set Your Dog Up for Success and Enjoy Reliable Long-Term Results! 🐶🌟

We expect a lot from our dogs, but it’s important to remember they are like foreigners in our world, unfamiliar with our language and customs.

And we often expect them to avoid even behaving like a dog at all:

🚫 Don’t scavenge for food.
🚫 Don’t chase small prey animals.
🚫 Don’t sniff people’s butts.
🚫 Don’t walk faster than me.
🚫 Don’t be too interested in your environment.
🚫 Don’t bark at strangers who approach us or our home.

But our dogs are trying their best. If your dog has regressed a bit in any learned skill, instead of blaming them, take responsibility as their friend and teacher. Revisit your training plan to support their success.

This is where expert training can help you identify and fill in any gaps.

Send me a DM to work together and set both of you up for success! 🐾✨

these people do amazing work. spare a little if you can.

We have another desperate situation here.

This 8 week old puppy was brought in to the same vet today as Andy after suffering a massive dog attack. He has a broken jaw, punctures in his skull and sinuses. The vet called me and asked if we could try to save him and the board has approved to try. His name is Ares, and he needs a miracle, but we know we have those here because we see them in Andy. Andy had a chance, he deserves one too. He may need to lose an eye, but I’d rather that than have him be euthanized for no fault of his own. He’s only 8 weeks old. I don’t care if we also become old dogs and puppy’s that have been attacked with broken jaws go to Helen.

I need to get him straight to CAVES, but I know this will be another $10,000-$15,000 save. We want to try, but we need your help.

Please donate to www.olddogsgotohelen.com/donate

Donations to PayPal get to us immediately and we will need them. As soon as I have him in my arms I will post again.

give your dog a reason to want to hang with you!

I know life gets busy and having a dog doesn’t make that any easier 😩

But if you treat getting them exercised as a chore to check off on your to-do list you’ll be missing out on a great opportunity to show your dog that you are an integral part of the fun of freedom ☹️

And not just the chauffeur that gets them to the park 😒

Or the bad guy who ends all the Good Times when it’s time to clip the leash back on and leave 👎

So asking them to sit so that they can earn the privilege of getting away from you is all kinds of wrong. if you want them to sit go ahead, but consider what happens next.

One of the best kept secrets in having a great recall is to be your dogs partner-in-fun along the way 🫶🏻

So play. Practice their latest favourite trick. The only rule is that you are enjoying the moment together 😁

Then let them do dog things, call them back and repeat.

Your dog will listen better and you’ll get the benefit of connecting with them (and disconnecting from technology) while you’re out there. Win-Win 🙌

share so others can benefit.

Then go have fun with your dog!

we can do better! 🫠

Distraction is a management tool and there are definitely times where that is the best option 👍

But it’s not a plan to change how your dog feels about something and is bound to fail at some point without a more thorough plan.

The Reactivity Reset program will show you how you can start to change how your dog actually responds to the world around them 💥

Now available in a condensed Masterclass format 🎉🎉

29/05/2024

So this happened today:

While walking Harry this morning, he spotted a squirrel. When he returned his focus to me, I rewarded him with part of his breakfast to reinforce his great choice.

A man passing by commented, “That’s one spoiled dog!” 😒

Unsolicited opinions like this are common. While he may have thought he was being funny, his comment reflects a belief system ingrained in many of us.

For generations, we’ve been raised with the idea that punishment is necessary for learning. “spare the rod spoil the child” was a popular saying not that long ago 😬

But now we know that we not only don’t need it, there are lots of downsides for both learner and teacher.

Shifting such deeply held but limiting core beliefs can be hard work. Some may worry that removing punishment means a complete free-for-all. It doesn’t have to. The key is setting clear, consistent boundaries. All good relationships have them—no punishment needed. Here’s how in 3 simple steps:

✅ Define Expectations Clearly: Know ahead of time what behaviors you want and don’t want, rather than winging it. Consistency is key and CLARITY IS KINDNESS.

✅ Use Positive Reinforcement: Teach your dog what you want them to do and keep rewarding good behavior for a long time.

✅ Manage Access to Bad Choices: Prevent unwanted behavior with management such as puppy-proofing, using baby gates indoors, or long lines outside until your dog’s skills are reliable.

Punitive and balanced training puts the onus on the dog to figure things out, whereas compassionate training puts the responsibility on you.

And isn’t that what good leadership is all about?

you don’t have to fix EVERY thing!! what do you think your dog would like to fix about you? 😆 let me know in the comments 👇

when Harry first came to live with me, he spent a lot of time in his crate, fearful to come out and interact 😢

one day soon I’ll write about our journey together but for now just know that our first year was focussed only on building trust with very little training. he was too shut down.

So I’m super proud of him for the bold choice of stealing the treats I absentmindedly left on my nightstand 😆

But if he was doing this on a kitchen table or counter, rest assured we’d be working on it.
Without fear or force.

Lately I’m seeing a lot of dogs (not MY clients) who are trained within an inch of their lives - they have to stoically hold sits around every possible distraction, walk in perfect heel formation for an entire walk, never dare to veer off course for an interesting smell.

and to be honest, it keeps me up some nights wondering how we got here 😔

i’m not suggesting our dogs should run wild. so what should your training be focussed on?

Here’s a good list to start :

🛟 THEIR SAFETY: coming when called, dropping things when asked, wait before going through doorways and crossing streets

👍YOUR SAFETY/PLEASURE: walk on a loose leash, be attentive around distractions if necessary, walk slowly on ice or stairs, don’t knock me over when saying hello, entertain yourself when i’m busy

🤩 THEIR CONFIDENCE: when left alone, with new people, dogs, city sights and sounds, objects and riding in cars (or on public transportation). Consider your lifestyle and what your dog needs to be comfortable with - young kids? 🚸boats? ⛵️horses? 🐎 prepare your dog for YOUR lifestyle

and if you have some rules around dogs on furniture you can work on that by teaching them a more desirable alternative. .

teaching your dog to relax is one of the most important things you can do 🧘

This is especially helpful if you have a fearful or reactive dog, but dogs of ALL ages and temperaments can benefit from being able to just observe and process their environment from a safe distance .

I’m not talking about exercising them to the point of exhaustion 🙅‍♀️ A tired dog is NOT a good dog. They are just too tired to do anything, and that often includes self regulation 🤪

instead, try this on your next walk:

find a relatively quiet spot where your dog can observe the world around them.

Take a seat, put your phone away and take your ear buds out. just watch with them

Reward them for making good choices like lying down or remaining lying down when something interesting goes by. You can use praise or treats, but avoid giving them any verbal instruction.

If they struggle, you may need to find a quieter spot or give them a little more opportunity to get the Ya-Ya’s out before trying again.

practice daily and you might just find it a welcome peaceful interlude in your day ☺️

*thanks to sweet little Tally for the demo ❤️

If finding humane training and behaviour solutions is important to you be sure to save and share this post!

without regulation or any barrier to entry it’s getting harder and harder for people to sort the wheat from the chaff 🌾

these questions aren’t the whole picture but should help you spot any potential red flags, and know how to read between the lines when it comes to clever but often misleading marketing messages.

And do check out reviews and referrals, but don’t accept them blindly. look for verbiage around what the training experience was like for both human and dog participants, not just the outcome.

Do your due diligence - and if you are ever slightly uncomfortable, speak up. you and your dog deserve it and their life may even depend on it.

🌟 A big, warm hello to everyone who’s recently joined my little corner of the interwebs, and to those who’ve been with me since the beginning! 🐾✨

I thought it was high time to step out from behind the treat pouch for a proper introduction 🙋‍♀️

I’m Caroline. While “dog trainer” might be what’s written on my business cards, my true calling is so much more profound.

I’m on a mission to guide both you and your canine companions through life’s adventure with kindness, understanding, and an unwavering commitment to compassionate, connection-focused, and scientifically supported methods. 🐕💕

From the youngest age, I’ve been obsessed by the idea of conversing with animals - a real-life Dr. Dolittle dream! (Swipe right for a giggle at little me trying my very best to do just that 🤭)

I thought that meant becoming a veterinarian so i entered into a biology degree in university but when i took my first animal behaviour elective i had a huge “A-HA!” moment - studying the language of behaviour IS communicating with animals 💡🤩

So I chose to specialize in Animal Behaviour and after an intensive 2 year mentorship and a few minor detours along the way, launched Raising Rover in 2005.

Ever since then it’s been my great privilege to help people bridge the communication gap with their dogs and provide coaching at both ends of the leash to build a more cooperative and enjoyable relationship.

In the meantime I’d love to learn more about you. Share with me one thing you adore about your dog in the comments 👇

send this to someone with a new puppy 🐶

Puppy socialization is like a behavioural vaccine. when done right your pup has a better chance of becoming a confident and well adjusted adult.

So taking your new furball to a puppy socialization class may still be leaving big gaps in your plan.

➡️ EXPOSURE IS NOT THE SAME AS SOCIZATION! ⬅️

your job is to generate positive feelings around new sights, sounds, smells and experiences, not just expose them to some kind of checklist.

that may mean observing life from a comfortable distance at first and ALWAYS going at their pace. pair these with lots of praise, play and treats for extra good vibes!

Don’t forget to give some consideration to your own lifestyle; what does your pup need to be comfortable with - public transport? boats? your work environment?

building confidence and resilience is the most important thing you can do for your puppy, not teaching them to sit or walk on leash.

it’s easier to build a puppy than to fix a dog 🐶❤️

If you are getting a new puppy or know someone who is, put this book on the essential reading list:

Puppy Socialization: what it is and how to do it by Marge Rogers and Eileen Anderson.

have questions about reactivity? let me know in the comments ⬇️

Reactive behaviour is a result of fear or lack of confidence (with just a few exceptions). it’s an I Need Space/Time signal.

This is an emotional response. Not a choice. Has anyone ever relaxed because someone told them to RELAX?! 🤣 Your dog isn’t choosing to feel badly or be afraid. Just as i don’t choose to be afraid of wasps. And it doesn’t matter if you think it makes sense, the fear is real to me.

The solution is not about control (yours or your dogs) but about changing those underlying emotions and teaching coping strategies and resilience. Both for you and your dog.

And ensuring your dog knows you’ve got their back.

So let them know you love them in ways that they appreciate (hugging might not be it)

Let them sleep with you (unless they guard the bed or someone in it or get better rest elsewhere).

Train humanely and with respect. If you wouldn’t do it to a toddler - don’t do it to your dog, who has similar cognitive abilities and emotional development as a 2 year old human.

Where safe, let them explore on leash; ahead, behind, to the side. doesn’t matter.
Just be respectful of others.

Lose the alpha/dominance nonsense. Please. raising your dog based on (flawed) wolfpack theory makes no more sense than modelling your human parenting skills after chimpanzees.

yes - but not in the way you might think.

if you’re in the path of the upcoming eclipse it’s hard to escape the mounting excitement! hopefully you have your eclipse glasses ready 😎 here is what you need to know for your dog’s safety:

🌕 it’s actually a myth that the sun is more dangerous during an eclipse. it’s the same sun as always and looking directly at it can cause severe damage to the retinas. but looking at it on a normal day is extremely uncomfortable so we tend not to do it.

🌖 but during an eclipse we are not only more likely to want to look at it, it’s not as uncomfortable to stare at it for more than a second. and so the need for specialized eyewear.

🌗 dogs typically don’t look up at the sun at any time (so smart!) and will treat it as they would any other day. so no need to get them special goggles (please don’t encourage them to look up, safety glasses or not)

But you should consider the following:

🌘 if you bring them to an area where a crowd is congregating to view the spectacle, the energy and noise of the crowd could be stressful. better to leave them at home if they aren’t crowd-proof.

🌑 dogs who are stressed during storms may see the darkening sky mid-day as a sign that a storm is coming in which case this could trigger an anxiety or panic attack.

🌒Livestock and wildlife may be more reactive to an eclipse so if you happen to be around these, best to keep your dog indoors.

🌒 and if you choose to stay outside with your dog just keep an eye on them for any sign of stress (panting, shaking, lip licking, tucked tails, flattened ears, whining, etc..) and if they are anything but happy and relaxed get them inside for some cuddles (if they like that kind of thing).

Where will you be during the eclipse and will your dog be with you?

there is a reason puppies are so cute!!! 😅

all that adorable floof and mischief comes with a lot of work and a few surprises.

In over 20 years of helping people raise puppies these are some of comments I hear over and over again and which were echoed again in a recent poll in my stories (thanks to all who shared their thoughts and experiences!) 🙏

But I saved the best one for last:

“I wish I had taken the time to enjoy the puppy stage more”

While that may seem hard to do when you have a mouthful of teeth embedded in your ankle, know that almost everyone misses this special part of the journey at some point 🥹

So take the time to inhale that sweet puppy breath.

Understand that your pup is doing the best they can. They didn’t choose this. You did.

And get some qualified help if you need

Anyone else not thrilled about losing an hour of sleep tonight? 🙋‍♀️😒

But at least we can mentally prepare. Not the case for our pets.

in a perfect world, we would make this shift in small increments of 10 to 15 minutes over a week or two leading up to the time change.

speaking personally, that would take a level of forethought and organization I just don’t have the bandwidth for 🫤

So adjust as gradually as possible and appreciate that your dog may be a little confused. support them as best you can and
you should both be back in a good groove in a few days.

➡️ BONUS TIP:

I am ALL for giving my pets a structured daily routine but I suggest building some variability in from the get go.

Think of routine as a consistent flow to the day: so walks, meals, enrichment activities, naps, and playtime all happen in a predictable order, but not necessarily at the exact same time each day.

That won’t help you tomorrow but if you start now, you’ll be well prepared for the end of daylights savings in the fall - not to mention if you’re ever late coming home!! ⏰🙌
