Special thanks to everyone who donated towards Cabbage’s ophthalmology specialist consultation! His appointment was yesterday.

The specialist thinks that he may not be able to close his eyes completely when he is resting, so that is why he has these ulcers that are not healing. She did a special procedure called a diamond bur debridement to hopefully aid in the healing process of these ulcers. The hope is that with a few weeks of medication and healing time these ulcers will resolve.

Cabbage has an amazing potential home lined up, so we are hoping we can get him healed up quickly and off to his forever home!

We really appreciate all of your support with our veterinary expenses. It is one of our most financially taxing components to rescuing these animals.

We took in a 30 year old ball python today. She was surrendered because her owner moved out, and left her behind with her family. Her family was scared of the snake so they did not touch her for months. I’m not sure how long exactly she was kept in this filth. But what matters now is that she is safe. These situations can be complicated, and I try to see the bright side of things but sometimes these cases really hit hard. Fortunately considering the conditions she was living in, she is not in terrible shape. Reptiles are so resilient. We removed some retained eye caps, and got her into a clean warm environment. Hopefully she will start eating for us soon, and then we can find her a forever home. Oh did we mention the owner told us she has been rehomed 4 times before…

Cabbage needs your help!
Funding for veterinary ophthalmologist appointment needed.

Our sweet little lionhead mix Cabbage has been dealing with significant eye issues since he was rescued from a neglectful situation back in October. This brave little rabbit was left to fend for himself when his owners went away on vacation for a week. When they came back and realized they ran out of supplies for him, they contacted us to take him in, stating that their children were “done” with him.

Well we heard that and immediately rushed to take him in. Cabbage came in to the rescue in a soaked cardboard box filled with rotten cabbage (hence his name - I could not get the smell of cabbage out of my rescue room for a week).

Immediately I noticed that he was squinting his eyes and uncomfortable around his face. We took him to our awesome vet, who diagnosed him with eye ulcers (scratches). He has been in foster and receiving treatment for these ulcers.

Cabbage has continued to grow and do well with us, but unfortunately, his eye treatment has not been working as we hoped and he still appears to have active ulcers in both of his eyes.

Ultimately today our vet recommended that we make an appointment with a veterinary ophthalmologist for a consultation and possible procedure to help heal the scratches in his eyes.

The estimate for this visit and possible procedure is estimated to be $400-800 pending any additional findings.

We do have a special GoFundMe set up for our veterinary expenses so we can provide the best possible veterinary care to our animals.

Even if you’re able to contribute a few dollars, every little bit helps!

Cabbage has an amazing potential forever home lined up as long as we can get his eyes fixed!

Thank you so much to everyone who has sent us supplies recently! We would not be able to save so many animals without your support.

Can you spot our little furry friend in this photo? He has an adoption pending, but we will have several of his sons/daughters that will be available for adoption in about 6 weeks :)

After a long day of cleaning (special shout out to Kristina, Greg, Sean and Sky for all of their help today!) I am finally able to sit down and look through my phone and catch up from the day.

Final count - 14 different surrender requests, and only 2 adoption inquiries. Fourteen surrender requests in less than 12 hours. Unfortunately we do not have any room at this time to take in new animals.

I always feel awful when I tell people that we don’t have any room. But I know that I have to focus on the animals that we are currently caring for.

We did take in one surrender today. I’ve named him Jack Frost.

Jack Frost is a 2 year old male Syrian hamster. His owner decided that she didn’t have enough time for him anymore so they asked to surrender him to us. Now I know - this hamster is a super senior and may not be around for much longer, but hopefully we can find him a nice “retirement home”. Jack is a bit of a grumpy grandpa so he would probably do best with an experienced hamster savvy adopter.

If you are not in a position to adopt from us, please share Jack and his friends so they can hopefully find forever homes!

We think Bonsai certainly deserves to be on the nice list this year!

This sweet one year old Dutch rabbit has been waiting for his forever home for too long! His foster mom reports he is an excellent house guest and is very good with his litter box. He keeps her entertained with his silly antics - he loves throwing around his stacking cups, and has a bit of a mischievous side.

If you are interested in learning more about this special rabbit, please send us a message!

Ok let’s put this to a vote- which is cuter, a “mischief” of baby fancy rats, or a “horde” of baby Syrian hamsters??

The one litter of baby hamsters we have are around 5 weeks old, and then a second litter was born 10 days ago! That’s a lot of tiny hamsters to feed and find homes for! They were from the situation from a few weeks ago where the adult hamsters were living in trash bins and laundry baskets. A few of the adults are still looking for forever homes.

We received this litter of baby rats from an “accidental” litter. They will be ready for new homes in about 2 weeks.

In the meantime we are running low on essential rat and hamster foods as well as chew toys and treats.

If you’d like to send the babies some snacks, we have an Amazon wishlist setup for the rescue. We also have cashapp/venmo (smallnfurryrescue)

As always thank you for your support!

If you are interested in being added to our waiting list to adopt any of these adorable babies please send us a message. We are also looking for foster homes too!

Becky with the Good Hare - fur that looks so good she could be a teddy bear!

Becky was one of the 30+ rabbits that were rescued from a horrible hoarding situation in Edison NJ about a month ago. There were mostly English angoras and Jersey Woolleys in the home, all in various stages of neglect. Surprisingly, Becky was one of the more well kept rabbits and did not require major grooming.

Unfortunately, it was clear from day one that Becky was terrified of people and would hop away at any small noise or movement.

One of our amazing fosters stepped up to take Becky into her home to give her some much needed one-on-one socialization time and TLC. Tonight we received a video of Becky totally relaxed hanging out on her foster mom’s lap. This is truly so heartwarming to see and we are so happy that this beautiful young rabbit now has a second chance at a better life!

We think Becky may do well bonded with another more confident rabbit. She will require regular grooming as Jersey Woolleys have very unusual fur. We are happy to help her new owner with any of her grooming needs.

We estimate that Becky is around 1-2 years old and she will be spayed prior to her adoption. She is a tiny thing at around 2lbs.

For more information about Becky please send us a message!

Hamster update!

We posted a few days ago about an urgent rescue call - a hamster was left behind by her owner in a motel in north Jersey and they contacted us for help. Unfortunately animal control and the local shelters refused to help the motel with this hamster, claiming that they only work with cats and dogs. Sadly this is an all too common occurrence, and something I am hoping to change with education. These tiny animals need help too! Even though she’s not a cat or dog, she is still a living creature that was abandoned by her owner.

Fortunately one of our amazing fosters, Sky, was able to save this sweet young Chinese hamster and get her to safety. Sky not only drove to north Jersey to pick up this little hamster, but also offered to foster her for us because we are so full right now. Sky was able to upgrade this little hamster into a fantastic foster enclosure, far better than the tiny critter cage she was living in.

“Doughnut” will be available for adoption soon!

We also have several other hamsters waiting for their forever homes. To see an updated list of our adoptable pets, check out our petfinder page.

transport help needed!

Royal motel, Secaucus to Howell, NJ

This morning I received a call from the manager
of the royal motel. They said they had a guest that left a hamster behind last week. The hamster was being cared for by another guest, but now they are not able to care for it.

We instructed the manger to contact the local shelter as well as PD, since this hamster was abandoned. Unfortunately neither service was able to help, stating that they only worked with dogs and cats.

Time and time again this is an ongoing issues - small companion animals are not treated the same way dogs and cats are. This animal was abandoned by its family. Plain and simple. They should be at the very least educated about how this is not okay - to leave a defenseless animal alone. We don’t even want to think about what might have happened to this poor hamster if the motel employee did not find it.

We would like to get this little hamster to us at the rescue, but unfortunately do not have the time to drive up to pick it up.

We are looking for a volunteer that is able to make the trip to Secaucus, and then bring the hamster back to us in Howell.

Please send me a message or text if you are able to help!
