I can see why pet stores call these guys “teddy bear hamsters”

We have **8** baby Syrian hamsters that are ready for their forever homes.

Syrian hamsters can make fantastic pocket pets for people looking for that special non traditional pet. These little guys are inquisitive and interactive with their people. They love to burrow in tunnels and run on wheels. Did you know that the average hamster can run FIVE miles in one night? It’s important that they have an appropriately sized running wheel (at least 10 inches diameter for an adult syrian hamster). We also promote ethical housing for these little bears - most “hamster cages” that are sold at pet stores do not give these active creatures enough room to be comfortable. It’s important that they have at least 600sq inches of uninterrupted floor space and at least 6 inches of bedding in their enclosures.
Syrian hamsters are solitary animals and must be kept in their own enclosure to ensure they are happiest.

Small n Furry creature clean up crew needed!

We are looking for volunteers to help us with keeping our rescue animals clean and happy while they wait for their forever homes. Our rescue is based out of Howell, New Jersey.

With the number of animals I have in my care right now, it takes me about 4-5 hours to clean each cage and spend time with every animal in the rescue room, so I could really use a helping hand or two. Typically big clean days are on the weekends.

Of course you’ll get bonus snuggles and cuddles with our adorable animals :)

If you’re interested in volunteering with us, please send me a message!

Update - Thank you to everyone who generously contributed to the cost of Oliver’s emergency vet care. Sadly Oliver succumbed to his illness and passed early this morning. We are grateful to our supporters who helped us, especially his foster mom Jess. We were able to give him pain medication and support him as best we could through this. GI blockages can be a tricky disease in rabbits, and we did everything we could have for this sweet boy. Oliver will forever be part of the Small n Furry family 💕

Oliver had an emergency vet visit this morning, which was definitely an unexpected expense for our rescue. You may remember we made a post about how he helped with a lifesaving cecotroph transplant. Now Oliver needs our help. His foster mom contacted me yesterday because she noticed that he wasn’t as interested in his food, and wasn’t pooping. Immediately this is a red flag for rabbits, we worry about a condition called GI stasis, where their GI tract slows down and can sometimes stop working completely. This can be a very tricky symptom to manage in rabbits, and ultimately can be caused by a lot of things. In Oliver’s case we were able to get some X-rays done at our vet and they are concerned he may be showing signs of a blockage. We are treating him supportively with pain medication and fluids. We hope things will start to move along, and hope for a good outcome for this sweet boy.

This vet visit was definitely an unexpected expense for the rescue, so far about $500. We have an emergency vet fund, but this will certainly take a hit from this visit.

If you’d like to help us with Oliver’s emergency vet care expenses we would really appreciate it, Oliver would too!

New rabbit intakes!

Thanks to some amazing people who stepped in to help foster, we were able to get several animals out to foster homes to make room for some urgent surrenders.

Jasmine is a 1 year old Holland Lop. She was purchased from a breeder. The owners decided they didn’t want her anymore due to travel plans they had this summer. We gave them options for boarding and offered assistance, but they elected to surrender her instead.

Jasmine is settling in and seems like a pretty sweet rabbit. We are going to be working with our vet to get her spayed asap.

Aurora is a 3 year old mixed breed rabbit - maybe some kind of harlequin/dwarf? She was surrendered because the owners were moving and their new landlord did not allow pets. Aurora was fed a mainly seed mixed diet, so we are going to be working on a special diet plan for her. She is pretty calm so far and is settling in.

With these new rabbit surrenders we are running low on Timothy hay! If you’d like to send us some we have it listed on our Amazon wishlist.

Hamsters available for adoption!

Right now we have FOUR different species of hamsters that are ready for homes. It’s a hamster explosion!! Consider adding one of these adorable creatures to your home. All hamsters are solitary and must live in their own enclosure. Some of these photos are of baby Syrian hamsters. They are only about 6 weeks old and can still live together for another two weeks or so, before they become territorial. We’d love to get them pre- adoption approved so we don’t have to set up 9 individual enclosures 😰 in a couple of weeks.

Baby Syrian hamsters (and dad) - owner’s son unfortunately made the poor decision to breed their two hamsters, and didn’t realize they were going to get 10 babies.

Lou - male Chinese hamster (his brother Lawrence is available too). They were surrendered to the rescue after they started fighting. The owner was told by the petco they purchased the boys from that it was okay to keep them together. Unfortunately this is completely false information. Hamsters should be kept alone as they become territorial once they reach adulthood. Lou is a bit shy but is learning to like people.

Baby Campbell dwarf hamsters - we still have 3 females that need homes! These chubby little beans are super fast, but with time may get used to being handled.

Bailey - senior female Robovoski hamster surrendered due to her owner moving to a place that didn’t allow pets. She is a typical Robo and is full of sass!

Captain Barbosa - this sweet old man needs a hospice home to live out the rest of his life. He was saved with another hamster after his owner passed away. We don’t know exactly how old he is but Barbara sure seems like he’s been through a lot. He is missing one of his back feet, and has a bit of a head tilt. He seems pretty happy and does not seem too uncomfortable. We don’t know how much time he has left but we would love to find him a home, otherwise he will live his life out at the rescue.

For more information about adopting from us, please send me a message.

Bonded pair of ferrets available for adoption!

Conrad and Isabelle are a super cuddly pair of ferrets that are searching for their 3rd home :(

Unfortunately their owner had to move suddenly and was unable to take them along. Both ferrets were rescued from other organizations, so they have been rehomed once already. The two are now bonded and must be adopted together. Their ages are an estimate. Both ferrets appear to be in good health, and will be examined by our veterinarian next week.

Guinea pigs looking for their forever home!

We were contacted by their owner yesterday because they were urgently looking for help. They unfortunately are moving oversees next week and they were desperately trying to bring them on the journey, but they were just not able to make it happen. They were well loved by their first owner, and now are ready to find their second families!

Hibiscus and Sunflower are two big beautiful girls. They are about 2 years old and are super friendly. They love cuddles and like to be brushed. The two must be adopted as a pair.

Walnut and Pecan are a bonded pair of brothers. They are also about 2 years old. Both boys seem very curious and will definitely be little couch potatoes. They are inseparable and definitely need a home together.

We always need guinea pig fosters! Can’t commit to adopting? Consider fostering one of these pairs until they find their forever home. An enclosure and all supplies will be provided!

Rabbits looking for their forever homes!

I am also urgently looking for foster homes for rabbits, I cannot take any more rabbit surrenders in at this time until some space opens up.

Marvelous Marge *hospice* - She is a well loved figure in our rescue but I really would like to find her a forever home to live out her best life. Marge was pulled from a neglect situation last year. She has chronic arthritis and issues with sore hocks- she wears special booties that help with this. She is litter box trained and a BIG girl so we would love to find her a larger space to live in. She unfortunately was diagnosed with kidney disease a few months ago. Our vet gave her a guarded prognosis and we are continuing to monitor her closely. She is on supplements to help her joints that she takes every day. As an angora rabbit she requires regular grooming, which she actually enjoys!

Oliver - 2.5 year old neutered male mini lop. This sweet soul was rescued from a life living outside in a hutch with another male rabbit who was picking on him. He is slowly coming out of his shell and is learning that people are not so scary. He is litter box trained, and absolutely loves his treats. His favorite toys are his stacking cups. He may do well with a rabbit friend.

Popcorn - 4 month old lionhead male. Popcorn came to us from AHS Lacey after he was surrendered for a serious eye infection. We took him to our vet who confirmed that he had a condition called Entropion, where his eyelid rolled into his eye causing painful ulcers. Fortunately we were able to treat his eye ulcers with medication. As popcorn is continuing to grow we are monitoring his eye closely. He has a follow up with our vet soon and that will determine if he will need surgery, as it seems like his lid is getting better as he is growing! This silly boy loves to hop around and do binkies when he is excited. He is super food motivated and always gets excited for treats.

Dust Bunny - male lionhead is one of two babies we hand raised.

Lint - sassy girl is the sibling to Dust Bunny and was also hand raised.

Sneaky ferret REUNITED with her owner!!

This was such a team effort and I am SO grateful for so many people that helped this little girl get back to her family.

Little Shantel got a little too curious and squeezed through an open door at her house during playtime on Saturday evening.

She was saved by an amazing family that was driving by - they saw her wandering in the road (near a very busy intersection!) and scooped her up right away. The family that found her made every effort to try to reunite her with her owners - they brought her over to Northstar Vets who checked her out quickly. The finders reported her missing to the township shelter.

After a few days they contacted me - and I posted her story on this page.

Thanks to the power of social media, her owner saw the post I made and contacted me today!

Shantel is happily safe back at home (and will be getting an extra secure lock on her cage ;)). Her family was so thankful that she was found safe.

Ferret found in the middle of the road! Searching for owners!

This sweet little thing is very lucky to be alive. It was found in the middle of the road in Hamilton township, Nj over the weekend. The finders said that someone was trying to catch it and they thought it was a possum at first, but no, this sweet thing is someone’s pet!

We’re hoping to be able to reunite it with its family - these little weasels can be very sneaky! Hopefully it just escaped and wasn’t intentionally left outside 😞

We will be holding this ferret for the 7 day stray hold before looking for a new home if the owner does not come forward.

New intakes!

We helped our friends at AHS-Newark Branch and took in a few of their recent exotic companion animal arrivals.

First we have this adorable juvenile bearded dragon - we believe she is a female. We don’t know much about her story or how she ended up in the shelter, but the good news is she appears to be healthy! She is a little apprehensive about people, but jumped right out for her breakfast.

Next we have two adult female guinea pigs. They were reported on intake as “strays” which means they were most likely dumped and found outside :( this is an all too common occurrence. Fortunately they were saved and kept safe at the shelter. They are both a bit skittish but hopefully will settle in quickly.

If you are interested in any of the animals listed on this post, please send me a message here or email me at [email protected]

My rescue wouldn’t be successful without the generosity of adopters and donors. If you would like to help with the care of the animals in the rescue please consider making a donation. No amount is too small. I am so thankful for all of your generosity and support; the animals thank you too!
