I have lived in Vermont my entire life. I do some volunteering for local rescues and I have a huge soft spot for dogs. I have experience with puppies, dogs with medical issues as well as senior dogs. I enjoy spending time with family and friends, skiing, music, cooking and photography.

It’s that time of year again! Blue-green algae blooms pose a huge risk to our pets causing severe illness and, in severe cases, death. Made up of microscopic bacteria, blue-green algae is a normal part of the ecosystem in Vermont’s bodies of water. Read our blog to learn more about what symptoms look like and how to prevent toxicity in the first place: https://bit.ly/3wCND6e

Our one year old Springer is very nervous on walks, we’ve met with trainers, I’ve read books, watch videos, scoured the internet on how I could help him. There was a time where he literally would not walk down the street after being frightened by another dog (the dog didn’t do anything malicious he was just that nervous.) After working with him for MONTHS he is finally able to go for a walk and be mostly relaxed. He still has some way to go - but I remember feeling very discouraged in the beginning like we would never get to a place he would be OK going for a walk. Training a dog takes a lot of time and consistency so don’t give up if you are feeling discouraged. It doesn’t happen overnight, especially for a nervous dog whose brain is being flooded with stress hormones. I’m not sure if I will ever be able to walk him again with his border collie sister (who is very protective and makes him think there is a reason to be afraid, I think this might be where his anxiety started) but I can meet him where he needs to be and this just means I can get twice the exercise taking them out separately. Just wanted to put this out there in case anyone is where I was and is feeling discouraged!

Happy National Walk Your Dog Week!

A mutually beneficial activity, and perhaps one we don't always make enough time for.

Here are some great reasons to suit up with proper fitting gear, so that your dog can enjoy their walk with you!

Walking provides exercise as well as mental stimulation... being confined to a house and yard all day can lead to boredom, and boredom can lead to some undesirable behaviors.

You should spend at least 30 minutes everyday, doing an activity with your dog. Humans need more than that, for exercise, as will many dogs- but all goals are worth shooting for!

Walking your dog can help lower your stress, and boost the mood of you and your dog.

A large portion of your dogs brain is dedicated to their sense of smell. Letting your dog sniff on their walk helps work their brain and relieve their stress.

We will never know our dogs inner most thoughts, but acknowledging that they are their own beings and deserve to live a varied and interesting life as well.
