We picked one of our OWN FIRST "production" apples today; a SnowSweet! We only allowed the young tree to fruit one this year, and it sure was a treat!

🍎✨ Snow Sweet Apple:
The Snow Sweet apple is a crisp, juicy, and cold-hardy variety known for its wonderfully balanced flavor: sweet with a hint of tartness and a unique "almost buttery" overtone.

☝🏻Interesting Tidbits:

🍎✨No-Brown Wonder: Its most famous feature is its snow-white flesh that is incredibly slow to oxidize (turn brown!) after being sliced. Perfect for beautiful fruit platters, salads, and lunch boxes!

🍎✨ The Northern Heritage: It was developed by the University of Minnesota (the same folks who brought us Honeycrisp!) and was introduced in 2006, making it a modern marvel bred for cold climates.

🍎✨Unique Flavor Profile: Tasters often describe its complex flavor as having hints of honey, citrus, and that unexpected "buttery" richness.

Spent a great weekend at Sandhill Mill. We packed a lot into 2 days.

Learned more about freshmilled flours, pet Gizmo, enjoyed a beautiful sunrise and ate several delicious meals.

Up next for harvest at the VonD's compound? The Virginia Hews Crabapple. They're a pretty little thing with a strong history and personality to match.

They've been around America since the early 1700s, and was highly prized for use in cider making and was a favorite of historical figures like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson even dedicated his entire North Orchard at Monticello to this apple.

They are primarily used for making cider and jelly, prized for the pungent, cinnamon-flavored juice they produce. The fruit ripens from September to October and can be stored in cold conditions for a couple of months.

Alternating with some maples, these line the orchard driveway, and are so pretty to see as you enter the yard.

Remember that pic with the needle-nose & plum pits?! Here's a little flashback to the day I pitted about a half a bushel of plums. It only took me about a half hour, which is a LOT quicker than I was expecting!

After this initial struggle on video, it went pretty quick! The pro-tip I discovered was to go in from the side, not the top or the bottom. If you go in from a side, you can grab the pit from a wide point and yeet it out better.

Its def turning into fall weather around here (west-central WI) and all y'all so excited for it, while I'm creeping around my house in fuzzy socks & fuzzy robe. Don't judge - its like wearing a hooded blanket and not as quirky as one of those snuggies things.

I've made soups two different times already, too.

If you can't find me for the next 8 months, I'll be hibernating in the basement by the woodstove with Waylon.

If you know me & Dolly in real life, then you might know that we've been working towards her Therapy Dog certification. Tonight, she successfully completed observation number two of three!

So, if you're keeping track:
✅️ "so you wanna be a Therapy Dog class"
✅️ background check (for the handler, me)
✅️ handling & temperament test
✅️ 1st observation in a medical facility
✅️ 2nd observation in a medical facility
🔲 3rd observation anywhere in public
🔲 submit all paperwork and become certified!

Paws crossed that we get these last few steps completed quickly! 🐾 Dolly is excited to get to work!
