Is your pup beach ready? Walton sure is!

Help your furry friend beat the heat with these essential tips for keeping dogs safe and comfortable during scorching summer temperatures.

Hydration is Key
Just like humans, dogs need plenty of water to stay hydrated in the summer heat. Ensure they have access to fresh, cool water at all times. Carry a portable water bottle and a collapsible bowl for outdoor adventures. Consider adding ice cubes or freezing dog-friendly treats for a refreshing hydration boost.

Adjust Exercise Wisely
Modify your dog's exercise routine to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Schedule walks and playtime during cooler hours, such as early mornings or evenings. Keep an eye on your dog for signs of exhaustion or overheating, such as excessive panting or lagging behind, and take frequent breaks in shaded areas.

Protect Those Paws
Hot pavement can burn your dog's sensitive paw pads. Stick to grassy areas or invest in protective booties to shield their paws from scorching surfaces. Test the pavement with your hand - if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your pup.

Create Cool Retreats
Ensure your dog has access to shaded areas both indoors and outdoors. Set up a comfortable, well-ventilated space at home with good airflow. Consider using fans or air conditioning to maintain a cool temperature. Outdoors, provide ample shade, and ensure a fresh water source is available.

Never Leave Them in Cars
Never, under any circumstances, leave your dog in a parked car without AC, even for a few minutes. The temperature inside a car can skyrocket rapidly, posing a life-threatening risk. Leave your furry friend at home if you need to run errands.

Watch for Signs of Heat Stress
Be vigilant for signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke in your dog. These include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or unsteady walking. If you suspect heat-related distress, move your dog to a cool area, offer water, and seek immediate veterinary assistance.

By following these heat safety tips, you can ensure your canine companion stays cool and comfortable during the summer months.

Meet Maple!
A beautiful “Newfie” a.k.a. “Newfoundland Dog”

Some may look at dogs like Maple (and her siblings) and question their safety around these beautiful dogs, but we’re here to set you straight. While Newfies are known to weigh up to 180 lbs, and can have an imposing appearance, their calmness, intelligence, loyalty, and playful demeanor might surprise you.

Newfies are very unique. They have water-resistant coats, webbed paws, and were originally bred as working-class dogs for fisherman; they’ve been used to pull in fishing nets, haul carts, and have even saved countless lives of people in near-drowning situations. They come from the area that we know today as Newfoundland, Canada; though their history stretches back to at least 1775 (when George Cartwright applied the name to his own dog), well before Canada was established in 1867.

Maple took a few minutes to warm up to us, but after getting acquainted, she’ll barely leave our sides! We’ll see you soon, sweet girl!

Meet Lilirose!

This very special member of the Dunes Pet Sitting family came into our care through unusual circumstances, and we'd like to tell you a little bit about her journey.

We’ve known Lilirose and her family through Treat Your Pet for more than five years. After an unfortunate recent event, Lilirose needed Dunes Pet Sitting’s support.

As soon as we heard about Lilirose’s situation, we spent time with the family to learn about her routine, her behaviors, and the family’s needs. As it turns out, she was going to need four visits a day, seven days a week, for an extended time. We immediately got to work developing a structured visit schedule, nutrition and exercise plans, and started her care right away!

Caring for Lilirose was a challenge in the beginning… New people frightened her, and her dog-to-dog socialization was very limited. She wasn’t great at eating on command, yet she was quite a bit overweight. Her potty training wasn’t the best.

Fast forward two days and were already in love with her, regardless of her struggles.

In that same time, we were able to start seeing improvements… She would eat on command, and even lick her bowl clean. She started going potty outside 90% (or more) of the time. Her dog-to-dog socialization was slowly improving.

Today, Lilirose still has progress to make, but she’s a different dog… She runs to us when we enter the house. Her dog-to-dog socialization has greatly improved. She goes potty outside 100% of the time. Her human interaction is greatly improved. She has lost nearly 1.5 lbs.

Needless to say, Lilirose has earned a very special place in our hearts, and we look forward to seeing her (and her family) again soon!
