Spirit Micro Farm Spirit Micro Farm is my personal adventure into urban farming.

I believe that nature has the ability to heal mind, body and spirit--and with permaculture as my inspiration, I'm turning our 3/4 home and property into a miniature farm experience.

The swallowtail caterpillar is devouring fennel and the butterfly loving the cosmos. I get such joy getting to share the lifecycle with Bryson, who just loves little creatures.

Did you snap beans with your grandparents or parents? I love finding things the kids are willing and interested in doing, and I hope they will be positive memories for them to look back upon.

There’s something just a little more exciting about being up things from under ground. It’s an unexpected surprise like $5 in winter coat pocket. Gathered 3-5 lbs that grew from 2 scrap kitchen potatoes!

2 years ago I pulled up a blackberry bramble and split into 9 plants, placing in the fruit tree guilds border. I utilize an existing fence line as a trellis for most. Last year’s heavy pruning resulted in tons more fruit. Pick and eat food is my favorite. And, as a possible caution for anyone relocating a bramble bush, even when you think you’ve got it all…you probably haven’t! The original area has been overrun with blackberry again as if I had never moved it, and we couldn’t bring ourselves to pull it again. Now we are strategizing on how to make it work with trellising for next season.

I first saw eastern columbine wild in the mountain woods and in fact photographed and framed for beauty. Now, many years later I know so much more about the value of this plant and am growing in my fruit tree guilds. It attracts bees and hummingbirds, plus it’s edible/medicinal.

Sadly had to cut down a volunteer willow oak. It was just too close to the house and tangled up with a flowering shrub. The boys are enjoyed playing with it as a “fort”.

To be honest, I have usually been pretty loose with my planting schedule because working full-time, being a mom of two boys and trying to garden is a lot to take on in the limited daytime hours. However, this year, I am going for the traditional planting by the moon approach, and planning starts now.

Gardening by the Moon (or "Planting by the Moon") is a great way to plan your garden. Many of our readers follow this age-old practice for a larger, tastier harvest. Here's how to do it!

Last year I was not prepared for how quickly the mulch would break down and the Bermuda grass take over. This year in the apple tree guilds I’ll focus on creating the edge and smothering the grass that’s spreading underground. While strawberry plants (seen here) and other plants once abundant could support w**d suppression, I won’t be able to fill this area in quick enough. Unfortunately I need to start with w**d barrier overtop much of this decomposing mulch, which should keep the worms happy until I can pull the barrier off a little at a time.
