As I tuck him in every night.

"He's not your kid."

As I prepare breakfast, scrambling up some eggs for him, ensuring he gets the most important meal of the day.

"He's not your kid."

As I do the laundry, making sure his blankets, jackets, and bedding (he still sleeps with us every night in OUR bed) are also fresh and clean.

"He's not your kid."

As I nursed him back to optimal health during those first few months we spent together.

"He's not your kid."

As I completely changed my career and life to be home with him more during the day and save for our future—because I couldn’t stand seeing him so sad on the Furbo.

"He's not your kid."

As I hang his coat and blanket (one of many) on the coat rack next to ours.

"He's not your kid."

As I pick up all his toys and place them back on his bed, only for him to scatter them everywhere as soon as he wakes up from his nap.

"He's not your kid."

As I take him out yet again to play and run in the snow, even while my fingers are numb, knowing he’s only a puppy for a short time.

"He's not your kid."

Yeah, he's not my kid.

He’s my heart. My world. My baby.

And for those who can’t see the resemblance between a puppy and a child, or believe that a dog is simply "just a dog," I genuinely hope you find your heart dog someday, and when you do, you'll understand.

DOGGIE PARENT ALERT:

Rawhide chews are not christmas gifts; they are unplanned ER vet visits just waiting to happen!
They are terrible for dogs but stores sell them because people keep buying them. Rawhide are harmful from processing with irritating chemicals, the small choking hazard pieces, the swallowed piece sits in the stomach and irritates your dogs stomach for months or forms a complete blockage from a big piece or several smaller pieces clumping together in the dogs intestines.

Canine intestinal blockage or foreign body surgery costs about 2-3k in this area to treat an obstruction. That $7 candy cane rawhide doesn't look so cute now, does it?

These are the most common rawhide risks:

Contamination. As with pet toys, rawhide chews can contain trace amounts of toxic chemicals. And, as with other pet (or human) foods, Salmonella or E. coli contamination is possible. Even humans can be at risk when coming into contact with these bacteria on rawhide treats.

Digestive irritation. Some dogs are simply sensitive or allergic to rawhide or other substances used in their manufacture processes. This can cause problems, including diarrhea and vomiting.

Choking or blockages. Rawhide bones and other edible chews can pose a choking and blockage risk. In fact, this is a much bigger risk than contamination or digestive irritation. If your dog swallows large pieces of rawhide, the rawhide can get stuck in the esophagus or other parts of the digestive tract. Depending on its size and where it is located, a local vet may be able to remove these pieces fairly easily through the throat. But sometimes, abdominal surgery is needed to remove them from the stomach or intestines. If it isn’t resolved, a blockage can lead to death.

It doesn't take much. Similar to the way small pieces of hair clog a drain, the small pieces of rawhide can clump and block your dog similar to the various items pictured in the first photo below. This is usually a hard thing to diagnose because rawhide is skin. Xrays don't show skin very well so usually a contrast study with barium is needed. Typically a barium study runs $500-900 in this area. Once the blockage is found then the surgery or endoscopic retrieval can be done. The best case scenario is your dog is puking and pooping out the pieces and this can be painful it there's a pointed piece that injures the tissues on its way out.

Please save your dog some pain and yourself hours waiting at an emergency clinic and thousands of dollars.

Don't buy rawhide.

Please take note of the treats you buy for your doggies!!

Just a little warning regarding the Christmas treats many stores have out for dogs.

Many of these so called treats end up with the dog "enjoying" some time in a veterinary surgery center over Christmas.

The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China.

The chews are made from cattle or horse hides and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the rancid smell.

Now comes the pretty festive colors and the glue to form cute shapes. On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium and formaldehyde.

If that wasn't bad enough, they regularly cause intestinal blockages, poisoning from chemical residue and choking. The chews are slippery when wet and are almost impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

Please don’t buy them. If some well meaning person buys them for your dog, please throw them in the trash!

Rawhides should also never be given to small dogs.
