6 IMPORTANT TIPS FOR TRIMMING YOUR DOG'S NAILS Are you worried about trimming your dog's toenails yourself? Here are some great tips to help you feel confident to do it yourself! You CAN do it! 🐾 If you have a puppy, play with his feet OFTEN! When he's asleep, when he's awake and cuddling, while he's eating, any time. Get him used to you rubbing your fingers through his toes. 🐾 Make sure your clippers are sharp. Dull clippers can pull the nail and cause pain. It is best to replace your nail clippers every year or two, depending on how often you use them. 🐾 Have someone hold the dog for you. If you have to do it by yourself, use a lick mat and peanut butter to keep your dog distracted. 🐾 Do not cut the nail to close to the "quick" (the pink center part of the nail that contains blood vessels and nerves). If you cannot see the quick or if your dog has black nails, it is best just to clip a small amount more every week or so instead of clipping a large amount at once. 🐾 Keep a bowl of flour nearby. If you do cut the quick, it will bleed quite a bit. Hold your dog's nail in the flour for about 10 to 15 seconds. The flour will stick to the nail and help stop the bleeding. 🐾 If you don't feel comfortable using the clippers, try using an electric nail file to gently file the nails instead.
