“Leave it” is a crucial cue for your dog to understand. There are many ways to teach this one, just do so in a forceand fear-free manner. The last thing you want when you do come across a snake is to scream LEAVE IT at your dog, and he freezes in fear for being punished in the past while learning to leave something.

Train your dog to stay safe on the trail, whether encountering snakes, other even dogs or humans.

"Dogs that suffer from separation anxiety can display anything from minor to major destruction when left alone. Such destruction is normally focused on points of entry such as doors and windows, or places and objects that are more intimately associated with an owner such as shoes, the bed or the sofa.

Anxious dogs often chew things because chewing releases pleasurable endorphins into the body, promoting a feeling of calm – just as some humans release tension by biting their nails.

Of course it can be distressing to come back to a home that has been damaged by your dog, but try to avoid responding using physical or emotional punishment – these are ineffective and only serve to increase your dog’s anxiety."

Separation anxiety is a hugely important problem to solve, both for dog and owner, as it is one of the main reasons why dogs are relinquished to shelters.

Bach Flower Rescue Remedy is useful for dogs and cats that suffer from anxiety and stress. It helps animals that are impatient, fearful, have been through a traumatic situation, have fear of thunder and fireworks or do not feel themselves. Add a few drops into their drinking water or rub some on their muzzle, ears and paws to help keep them calmer.

Whether it's simple leash-pulling or more significant leash aggression, the primary thing to keep in mind is that these issues are almost always preventable and manageable.

Do you use retractable leashes? We at Thunderdogs Malaysia do not recommend them as they are quite dangerous.

Check out this video on lead stroking and how it can help calm your excited pup down. I learnt this with Sarah Fisher when I attended one of her workshops several years ago and it has proven to be an invaluable method when dealing with our rescued dogs.

The owners are taught the lead stroking tip and we see a montage of other anxious dogs.
