During November, we would like to take a little time to talk about diabetes mellitus in pets! 🩺 🩸

Even though diabetes is a common chronic illness that often cannot be cured, it's possible to manage it with the right type of medication and regular appointments to ensure your pet has their blood sugar under control.

It can take a bit of work at first to get used to this new routine but, when successfully controlled, your pets will be able to live comfortable and long lives!

Does your pet suffer from diabetes? What were your biggest challenges? Tell us everything in the comments below!

Bonfire Night is almost here, and we would like to remind you to please check underneath your bonfires for hedgehogs (or any other animals that may have chosen to hide there) before lighting them! 🦔🔥

These little garden friends often hide under bonfires or piles of leaves for hibernation, and might not notice you lighting your bonfire before it’s too late.

To avoid burns, or even more severe problems, do a quick check before starting the fire, and if you spot a hedgehog in distress, don’t hesitate to call the British Hedgehog Preservation Society on 01584 890 801 for advice ☎️

Different pets have different personalities and though if we’re thinking sleeping all day, we’re most likely to picture a cat, there are plenty of dogs who are as well. 😂 What about your pet?

Would they rather participate in physical activity or relax? Let us know in the comments!

Cats are stoic creatures that are great at masking when they are unwell.

This means that even when they seem fine, they can actually be suffering in silence!

Feline hypertension is a condition in which cats’ blood pressure is consistently elevated, and that can lead to damage to multiple organs. The most commonly affected organs are:

👁️ The eyes, with sudden blindness being a very suggestive sign of hypertension

🧠 The brain, making your cat behave in an unusual way

🐾 And the kidneys, which can lead to irreversible kidney damage

As signs of hypertension often take time to develop, it’s important that we diagnose it as early as possible to avoid severe damage.

This can be achieved with regular blood pressure checks at our check-up appointments,

Many pet owners may not be aware of this, but conkers (also called horse chestnuts) are poisonous to dogs! 🌰 🐶

During this time of the year, it is common to find them on the ground, and our dogs might find them tasty or something fun to play with. However, conkers contain aesculin, a toxic substance that can be dangerous.

Signs of toxicity depend on the amount ingested and might include:

👉 Vomiting and diarrhoea

👉 Abdominal pain

👉 Excessive thirst

👉 Lack of energy

Have you heard of a parasite called Toxocara? According to a recent study, these parasite's eggs are present in most parks in the UK and Ireland, especially parks that are frequently used for dog walks. 🐕‍🦺

Dogs can easily pick up Toxocara eggs from contaminated soil and bring them into your home on their paws and fur. Children can end up ingesting these eggs, for instance, by kissing pets or by forgetting to wash their hands after playing with their furry friends.

Ingested eggs will then travel to the intestine and develop into adult worms, causing intestinal symptoms.

The best way to prevent parasite infections in your dog is by using parasite preventative treatments. Get in touch with us if you have any questions about de-worming!

We were recently asked by a member of the public to scan a stray cat in Kingston Park. When we checked his microchip details we discovered he had been reported missing, and we were able to reunite Rocky with his owners!

Rocky lives in Heaton and had been missing for 3 months! Rocky shares his house with two little girls aged 4 and 7 who were over the moon to have him home!

Rocky, we’d love to know what you’ve been up to for the last 3 months but we’re guessing you’ll keep that to yourself 😹

Not only is microchipping now a legal requirement for cats, it may just help a lost pet like Rocky find his way back home.

Welcome home, Rocky! 🎉👏
