Training is cccccold, but we are dddddoin’ it!

Sargent is 9 weeks old now.
He’s mastered “Sit” and wants to please. Driven by the desire for food, he’s learning “Settle Down” and will calm himself more and more while I’m busy — waiting in this sit-position for treats to fall from the sky! He is fascinated rather than freaked out when traffic passes by, and will sit automatically to watch! This seems like a good quality to have in a future Leader Dog. Still a puppy, however, he loves to chew things and when my arm becomes his favorite chew-toy, I know it’s time for him to “rest” in his crate-den. Which is why I have time to write this post! 🐾✨

Amateur / Rookie Training Tip of the Day:
DON’T FORGET THE ROUTINE...
Wake. Water. Walk. Repeat.

Being distracted by the cuteness is real!

This is day 3 with Sargent.
Not only have I learned how important routine is to avoid potty accidents in the house, but also the use of the crate. It’s a must to release the human notion that the crate is “bad” and realize it’s a safe space for the dog, like a den, where by nature they won’t soil where they sleep. Who wants to p**p where they eat or lie in their own mess? That’s not just a canine thing! Duh!

Each day I am determined to find the positive and small “wins” even if it’s not perfect, learn as I go, and stay in the moment day by day so training a dog that has specific goals doesn’t feel like an outrageous feat.
