Airlie Performance Equine Veterinary Dentistry is a veterinary practice in Waipukurau Hawkes Bay, that solely provides Equine dental care - our focus is the health of your horse's mouth! I am a fully qualified and registered Veterinarian. After several years in mixed veterinary practice I have decided to follow my passion
for horses, which I am already dedicated to in my private life. I have com

pleted further veterinary training which means I can now provide you with a comprehensive and up-to-date equine dental service. I am equipped with the latest technology and dental instruments, and as a Veterinarian can ensure comfortable and safe sedation for the procedure, so your horse stays stress free! This also means I can offer more than just the "normal" floating of the sharp enamel points. I am able to diagnose and treat common dental diseases, remove wolf teeth and ensure correct occlusion of your horse's teeth. A healthy mouth is the key to a happy horse! Getting ready to do more Minis tomorrow and Im actually really looking forward to it! Yes it's probably harder work than a normal sized horse - yet I still always offer a discounted rate for Minis! Why ? If I know I made one Minis mouth a little bit better - then it was worth it !

First ever talk about Equine Veterinary Dentistry at the RDA in Napier last Saturday.
A small crowd but everybody loved it and said that they could have listened to me for another hour - after I had already talked nonstop for over 1h even though I had 15min in mind 😆!

Guess it's a good sign that they enjoyed listening to me!

I had so much fun and I just love educating!

Next talk will be at the CHB Ponyclub in August :) ! Yay!

Huge thanks again to Helen ThePhysio to organize this!

Although it doesn't seem like it but this topic is actually also related to Veterinary Dentistry - because it's not just the Vet who benefits from a well handled horse but also significantly reduces your and your horse's stress level if you know your horse will stand quietly while having his general check up or while being sedated !! PM me if you are interested !

Did you know that I am fully mobile and can even treat your horse in your paddock yet still provide professional and up to date Veterinary Dental Service! You don't need a stall as I can use my headstand anywhere - means you just need a flat non slippery surface .
We also don't need to be close to a Water hose .
Due to my portable High Pressure Water flush that rinses the mouth before the dental- but can also be used to effectively flush out food filled periodontal pockets and gaps between teeth.

Had a great day doing the teeth of a few horses at my place before Christmas - and being able to work with my newest equipment - a Gag fresh from USA . Supposed to fit anything from a 17hh draft horse ( unfortunately don't have one so couldn't try that yet :) ) to a miniature. It definitly sits perfectly on my solid 14.3hh Appy as well as on some finer pony heads or even little Pumba - who had to model unsedated as I just did his teeth last week and forgot to take a photo ☺️

Gosh I love my Job ! I know that I have made this young 3 year olds mouth a whole lot more comfortable in one go !
He had 3 caps that were wobbly which should have come off a while ago - and he had 2 loose wolf teeth . The wolf teeth were sitting very close to the premolars and the adult teeth coming through had been pushing onto the root - slowly eating it away . One wolf tooth was broken off its little bit of root that it had left and just hanging on some skin - and the other had that really cool bowed root that shows where the adult tooth was coming down!
He had lately developed a dislike to being haltered so I'm sure this was the reason.

Let me know if you find the website easy to navigate or of there are any issues .

We are proud to use a very detailed and easy to follow Equine Dental Chart by Pimbury Dental App.                                       Your horses chart will be kept for our next visit and emailed to you to have it available whenever necessary

We've been busy getting some tiny little treats ready for the Riders Pack for the Winter Olympics - but as a " Dentist" I obviously made sure to only hand out "teeth friendly" sweets ( and they are supposed to look like teeth 🤔 ! )
Now rethinking my choice - they look very healthy - I'm hoping they actually taste good 😳

Blind wolf teeth!
Some of you may have never heard of this term- and since I just had the pleasure to see a couple of cases I thought I write a little note and share some cool pictures :) !
Blind wolf teeth are normal wolf teeth –that just have never erupted through the gums. Thus they have a thin layer of gum sitting above them- i.e, called “blind”! They can be easily missed if the horse’s mouth is not properly palpated by your dentist and can often be the cause of behavioral issues due to the discomfort experienced when the gums are being rubbed over the hard, sometimes pointy and sharp underlying tooth.
Wolf teeth erupt between 6 to 12 months and sit usually right in front of the first premolar in the upper jaw- but may appear in the lower jaw. Not all horses have wolf teeth. There is a debate about whether normal occurring wolf teeth are the cause for bit related issues in horses. Thus the removal of “normal wolf teeth” has to be decided case by case. However – blind wolf teeth are often the cause of discomfort in ridden horses and thus removal is recommended.
I had the great opportunity recently of seeing 2 horses with similar blind wolf teeth– both horses had them 2-3cm in front of the first premolar - and worse- in both cases the wolf teeth grew out towards the side “labial” instead of down – thus there was this little sharp lump – sitting right underneath a thin layer of gum exactly where the ring of the snaffle bit is putting pressure on. One horse was 12 years of age – an ex race horse – and the other was a 6 year old gelding. So it shows that it doesn’t only affect young horses – but it can stay undetected for a long time (even in ex – racehorses)
So as always- if you think your horse shows any signs of mouth discomfort, bit related behavioral issues, drops feed or anything else unusual – give me a ring!

February is National Pet Dental Health Month. While horses don’t "exactly" qualify as pets, this is still a good opportunity to talk about the importance of oral health for our equine friends.

Equine dentistry is not just about “floating” teeth. Dentistry is a veterinary discipline that, besides treating the mouth and teeth, also includes the associated structures of the head – for instance the sinuses – and the effect of dental diseases on the health of the rest of the body. That is why all horses should have a veterinarian perform an oral and dental examination at least annually (or more frequently based on the needs of the individual horse.)

Remember: just because your horse is not showing any obvious symptoms of dental disease, it does not automatically mean that all is well with your animal's oral health. Horses simply adapt to their discomfort and most horses with dental problems will show no noticeable signs at all, until the disease is a serious source of pain and infection that can affect the animal’s overall health.

Contact your horse doctor today to discuss a dental examination for your equine friend, and prevent more painful and costly problems later!

What an exciting moment - for me 😀!
I got to check out a 6 year old jumper who has been spilling his feed and is not great at taking contact with the bit - and this is what presented to me at the first glance - sedated , with a gag and a very good light source! A wolf tooth root remnant with a red inflammed and slightly infected area above it. Fragment was succesfully removed and cavity flushed and should heal now without any further complications! The roots of wolf teeth can fracture of at the tip due to a trauma to the tooth or during standard removal - altough it rarely happens- it sometimes just does ! Most of the time the fractured piece can be located and extracted separate - if the time is taken to do so - but if it doesn't get removed then it often works it way slowly to the surface and becomes a painful nuisance for the horse .
If your horse shows any signs of mouth discomfort - give me a ring - it may be a simple answer !

I always keep telling my husband that having that many horses has its advantages ! Like utilizing the fact that our Ponies need their teeth done and trialing out some new equipment ! A new headstand made specifically for our little clients and my finished water flushing system - an oral flush gun and a high pressure water pick - running of a water hose or by a small portable pump ! Only the best for our 4 legged clients !
