Ruben is going home!!!
BEST NEWS OF THE DAY!
Ruben will take off from Armenia on Tuesday August 22nd and arrive at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary (ADIWS), South Africa, on Wednesday 23rd.
Dubbed the World’s Loneliest Lion after he was left alone in a private zoo that closed and the other animals were removed, Ruben has not heard the voices of his own kind for six years, but his roars will be answered on August 23rd!
It’s been a big challenge securing a flight from Armenia, as we needed an aircraft with large enough cargo doors for Ruben’s travel crate, and none were available. Thankfully, Qatar Airways’ WeQare charity scheme stepped in, scheduling a wide-bodied aircraft on one of their passenger routes, and donating space on board for Ruben!
Ruben’s flight to freedom will take 14 hours, including a change of aircraft in Doha. While the ADI team will be travelling in the passenger section, Ruben will be comfortable in his specially made transport container in the temperature-controlled, pressurized hold of the plane.
Ruben was removed from the zoo and taken to a bear sanctuary run by Armenia’s Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife & Cultural Assets – where ADI supporters have been funding his care.
Ruben has potential neurological and spinal issues and stumbles as a he walks. He will require CT scans, and at ADIWS a special needs habitat has been prepared with low platforms and slopes to walk up with a guard rail on top. In Armenia, he has been in the care of Dr Harut Hovhannisyan in liaison with ADI’s Dr Peter Caldwell, who will be taking over his care in South Africa.
We are raising funds for Ruben’s lifetime care, which we hope will be many years, and will certainly involve significant veterinary care. Any extra funds will go towards care of all the residents at ADIWS.
Huge thanks to everyone who has been involved and stuck with this lonely old lion during the months it has taken to get all the permits in place to move him. Now, he is finally coming home.
