Congratulations to Jesse for graduating from her 12-week rehab program after TPLO surgery! This 6-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier is a rehab all-star who excelled at every exercise thrown her way including cavallettis, balance disks, and, of course, treat eating. Way to go, Jesse! 🐾🎉

🐾 Patient of the Week: Sailor! 🐾

Meet Sailor, the super cute Cavalier King Charles Spaniel! 🐶❤️ This brave pup underwent surgery this week to repair a tibial fracture and has been such a trooper throughout surgery and her recovery. We can’t wait to see her back to her playful self soon! 🏥💪

Meet Sebastian, one of our brave feline patients! 🐾 Recently, Sebastian underwent FHO surgery and is now on the road to recovery with the help of our dedicated rehabilitation team.

Unlike many of our doggy patients, Sebastian isn't very food motivated, but he absolutely loves to play with toys! 🧸Our technician has been using this to their advantage, incorporating his favorite toys into his rehabilitation sessions. By doing so, we've been able to maximize his participation and make his recovery process more enjoyable.

We love seeing Sebastian's playful spirit shine through as he heals. 💪 Keep up the great work!

Rowdy is an 8 year old Chihuahua mix that came to see the Trek team for TPLO surgery but when a lytic bone lesion was seen on his pre-op radiographs, a bone biopsy of his femur was obtained instead. While waiting for histopathology and culture results, Rowdy has been all smiles enjoying walks in his stroller and snuggling with his emotional support stuffy, Mr. Sloth.

Graduation season is far from over - Meet our newest rehabilitation grad, Kaya! She is a super active and playful six year old husky pup that loves to go on walks, runs and hikes. To make sure that she was able to return to her active lifestyle after left TPLO surgery, her owners decided to pursue in-home rehab with our team. She has made great progress and at 15 weeks post-op she is off all activity restrictions and is no longer exhibiting any lameness or signs of pain. Congrats Kaya!🎓

Last week we visited Wellshire Animal Hospital to help out the most handsome boy ever, Ozzy. Ozzy presented for a mass removal and digit amputation after he was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor on both his antebrachium and third digit of his right front limb. Even down a toe, he is still the sweetest and best looking boy in the world. Wishing him all the best in his recovery 😻

This week Gus graduated from his rehabilitation program with flying colors! He came to see the Trek rehab team for non-surgical help managing his bilateral MPLs as well as a previous tarsus injury. Through 11 sessions of rehabilitation and the addition of joint supplementation his overall discomfort, pain and lameness have have all currently resolved. Way to go Gus!

Congrats to Koda on graduating from his post-bilateral TPLO rehabilitation program!!! He has been working hard since surgery focusing on strength building in his hind limbs and improving passive range of motion in his stifles. In addition to laser therapy, manual stretching/massage, and targeted exercises he also enjoyed his sessions in the underwater treadmill (just look at that smile)🤩

Thor is a a six year old DSH that presented for surgery due to recurrent urinary obstruction. Due to the chronic nature of his condition, perineal urethrostomy (PU) surgery was elected. In male cats, the urethra narrows as it enters the p***s, therefore predisposing them to urinary obstruction. A perineal urethrostomy creates a new opening that decreases the length of the urethra and removes the narrowed region allowing easier urination along with lower risk of re-obstruction.

Thor has been recovering great at home and especially loves to prance around like a lion in his collar and hang out with his best friend, Porkins, the English bulldog.

Lobo came to see our rehabilitation team five months after undergoing TPLO surgery due to the development of post-operative pivot shift. Pivot shift is a rotational instability of the stifle that can occur post-TPLO due to median meniscectomy, muscle atrophy, and altered limb use. It is normally visualized as a jerking lateral movement of the stifle. Using a targeted 12 week rehabilitation program, Lobo was able to achieve an obvious increase in muscle mass, strength, and confidence in using his operative limb. He now exhibits no external rotation, is appropriately placing his limb, and is showing no lameness or off-weighting as previously seen prior to starting rehab. We are so proud of his hard work and amazing progress!

Congrats to the grad!!! Hundin is a super sweet, five year old, great pyrenees gal who underwent left TPLO surgery with the Trek surgery team in January. Following surgery, she began weekly rehabilitation visits with our rehab team and just recently graduated with top marks! Keep up the great work, Hundin🎓🥳

Last week we were called to to help sweet Kimber, a five month old blue heeler pup, after she sustained a distal femur fracture. After reducing the fracture, three intramedullary pins were used to stabilize the bone in position. Kimber will be on strict exercise restriction for four to six weeks then repeat radiographs will be taken to assess her bone healing and ability to return to normal puppy activity. Wishing Kimber all the best in her recovery ahead! 🥰

Congratulations to Ollie on graduating from his post-TPLO/MPL rehabilitation program! Being only four years old, Ollie's owners decided to pursue rehab therapy to help maximize his recovery and his return to normal activity after surgery. After nine weeks of diligent work he is pain and lameness free, visiting the dog park, and looking forward to hikes this summer! 🥳🎓

An underwater treadmill is a valuable tool when it comes to canine rehabilitation. It can be utilized to build strength and mobility, reduce pain, and improve proprioception (placement of paws and limbs). The buoyancy created by the water relieves pressure and stress on joints, allowing patients to work on improving range of motion with less pain or discomfort than if exercising on dry ground. The resistance the water provides also aids in increasing muscle mass and improving stamina and strength in a controlled environment. Additionally, warm water temperatures help to increase circulation, loosen and relax sore muscles, and ease pain.

Almost any dog can benefit from participating in hydrotherapy! It is a safe and effective way of exercising and conditioning with very minimal risks.

Last week, the Trek team saw Lucy, a super sweet four-and-a-half-year-old pointer mix, for TPLO surgery after she sustained a complete tear of both her cranial cruciate ligament and medial meniscus. According to sources, she fell asleep sitting up like this while recovering from surgery 😂 Wishing Lucy all the best in her recovery road ahead!

Congrats Gus!

Dibbs

Dibs is a 5 month old schnauzer mix who came to see Trek Rehab after she was found as a stray with both a fracture of her left radius and ulna as well as her left femur. While her femur fracture was able to heal on its own, she lost a lot of muscle mass and range of motion in the limb so began rehabilitation therapy to help combat this. She has been an A+ patient and will do pretty much anything for a treat! Just look at her go!

Diego

After sustaining a rupture of his left cranial cruciate ligament, Diego came to see the Trek Veterinary Surgery team on Halloween for a TPLO. From day one post-op, his owners have been diligent about his recovery; from daily icing to starting weekly in-home rehabilitation sessions. Diego is less than a month out from surgery and is excelling at all of his exercises and making great progress in his recovery!
