CrabCon just came and went and I use the event as a reminder to freshen up my food supply. Out with the old and in with the new! I do it again around New Years.
If you have the "Fresh & Foraged Foods for Land Hermit Crabs" book, you already know that I believe a broad variety of safe foods served in moderation is important for our 10-legged buddies (and any other species).
Here's a little insight into my purchasing and feeding habits when it comes to pre-made meals not made in-house (offering fresh is important, too - even if they do not always partake):
* I use my own book to check the ingredients online (and research anything new and add it to a list for a Second Edition).
* I don't purchase a large amount of anything that cannot be used up within 6 months.
* I do purchase multiple smaller portioned meals with little overlap in ingredients.
* I do transfer pouched foods into glass jars.
* I do offer 4 - 6 different mixes nightly or every other night - choosing from one basket and then placing it into another basket for rotation. When the one basket is empty, I start again in the other direction.
* Of the 4 - 6 different mixes, I use one mix from Bioactive.FX's Seven Days of Buffets (2 weeks, 14 mixes currently available). It is the only hermit crab food that has been laboratory tested to contain 50% of elemental protein and is purposefully created with attention to fats and calcium while using unique, nutrient dense, freeze dried ingredients.
