CSA week 2! We have worked hard to offer a variety of food that can offer great meals of seasonally homegrown food. While everything we planned hasn’t worked out, it is pretty exciting to see it all come together.

It’s our first week with eggs to share and that’s something worth noting!

Also so proud of this picture by

Meet Your Farmer: The City and Field Co.

Zac and Jina Lauer are first generation market farmers, growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Their farm, The City and Field Co. is located in Columbia City. They are using their experience of growing in small spaces and expanding with those methods on their new homestead. This year, they will add egg laying chickens and bees to begin diversifying their mix of food offered to add to their holistic design.

Recently, we had a chance to catch up with Zac and Jina Lauer to learn more about their new homestead. Check out the full interview on our blog.

Thank you for the feature homesteadersofindiana!

Hello! We are Zac and Jina Lauer from The City and Field in Fort Wayne, IN. We are a family of 4 that grows vegetables, herbs and flowers on an urban lot. We love the outdoors and embrace that gardening provides health and well being for all of us. The food security and the building up of our ecosystem are great benefits that make it that much better.

We grow as much as we can on our 550 square feet of garden beds and aim to grow a little more than we did the season before. Currently we use 11 - 30"x 20’ raised beds that are surrounded by perennial plants. Last season we grew 50+ varieties of vegetables, flowers, and herbs. We even ventured out and sold at our first farmers market.

We envision larger plots and larger yields for our future and are searching for a more permanent homestead. In the meantime, we are experimenting with companion crops, vertical growing spaces, and indoor growing spaces too. When we find a larger space to fully expand into a full permaculture homestead, we will use our small space planting methods to maximize yields.

We are always learning and adapting to what comes our way. Follow along to connect and grow with us!

Fall plant starts 🍁🌱

29/09/2019

It feels much better to cut grasses, herbs and flowers from around the garden to bring inside to decorate for fall then to buy something that will inevitably end up in a landfill. This one can be composted instead. 🙌🏼😀. I grabbed lemon grass, ornamental grass, goldenrod and Thai basil and bunched together with twine. Plus I added a bunch of just Thai basil. Simple and easy and my financial mind is thanking me. So much inspiration out there on reducing waste. Go explore.

Incredibly thankful and excited about the response to our garden tour posted a few days ago by Growing food in a small space can be challenging but it’s totally possible. Every week is different, so follow along. This dahlia pictured was grown from seed and they just keep getting better. Looking forward to digging up the tubers and seeing what produces next year. Did you know the petals are edible? Anyone ever tried them?

Thanks to Marissa for touring our garden and sharing what we do!

Meet one of our vendors The City and Field Co. thriving right in the midst of Fort Wayne!

“The City and Field Co. is an urban farm in downtown Fort Wayne. Zac and Jina Lauer created the city garden to offer vegetables, herbs, flowers and plant starts to the community to encourage urban food production. Surrounded by layers of perennials, approximately 550 square feet is used to grow annual vegetable and herbs. Although the garden is not certified, only organic methods are used to grow these plants, from seed to harvest.

They hope to educate and help others realize the potential of their own living space. From a pot on the windowsill to a full urban farm, they encourage everyone at any skill level to grow something edible.”

Stop by on Friday’s to meet Zac and Jina and pick up some of their delicious fresh foods, grown right here in the Fort!
