This beautiful boy is in foster at Barney's Boarding and he's an absolute stunner of a bun. He's looking for companionship and a 5 * home! If you can offer him the love he needs and company of other rabbits or rabbit then please contact the Bunnyjackpot Foundation or myself.

We want you to take a second, you don't need to close your eyes, because then you can't read this post! But, we really want you to just take a second to consider a time in your life, where you've walked a path, a path that was part of your daily routine, it got you from A to B, safely. Now, imagine, really consider, that same path, but with 33 million vehicles, travelling at high speeds on it, too.

An estimated 1 million animals are struck on our roads, every year, with this number suspected to be much higher. This trend is likely exacerbated by the continuous rise in vehicle numbers on our roads.

Vehicle collisions make up 9% of our annual patient intake and rank in our top 5 reasons for admission. The top 3 species reported are badgers, foxes and hedgehogs, the night travellers. We know many collisions are unavoidable, but by slowing down, especially at night, you could dramatically decrease the likelihood of a fatal collision. Let’s give wildlife a chance, this Christmas, to see another one.

The bad news first but please don’t forget to read on to the good news that follows it

RVHD2 update

We are aware that there is, sadly, yet another strain of Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic disease out there: “virulent” or “highly virulent” RVHD2. It’s been detected in Hungary, France, Northern Italy and the Netherlands, where it makes up approximately 50% of the cases seen (the other 50% being "classical" RVHD2). As yet, we can’t be sure of its presence in the UK, as no work has been done to look for it. We are in the process of finding out if it is possible to do any surveillance for it, but we know from past experience with previous strains, that it is only a matter of time before it gets here, if it’s not here already.

The good news is that there is a new vaccine which covers both it and the "classical" RVHD2 strain, but not RVHD1, nor myxomatosis. The bad news is that we don't expect this to be available in the UK until early next year. Because of the restriction placed on us by the Veterinary Medicine Directorate we are not able to provide the names of any vaccinations to rabbit guardians and care givers, only to clinicians such as vets. However, we are communicating this to them also so you should contact your vet for advice.

We hope to be able to give more news nearer the time of its release, including suggested vaccine regimes, for vets and for owners. Until then, please do not stop vaccinating with the currently available vaccine, as this offers the fullest possible protection available right now, , and please continue to take sensible precautions to avoid bringing it into your rabbit's environment (eg by changing outdoor footwear at the door, and being careful to forage in places with, ideally, no wild rabbits present).
If you are adding any new rabbits to your household (or if you run a rescue) then we advise quarantining any new additions for 2 weeks.

Barney’s Boarding

Barney came to us as he needed a new home. Who knew how much we would fall in love with him? He had the most funniest character and bonded mostly with me (well my legs mostly!) before he had his little op. He then decided our German Shepherd would be his girlfriend and would lay by her side when he wasn’t following the chickens around outside.

When he became ill & sadly passed away 4 years after we re-homed him, it broke my heart & since then it has become a bit of a rabbit obsession between myself & my daughter.

We since have had 5 more bunnies - all rescued. We also own 4 guinea pigs & lots of chickens. I have been a local dog walker & pet sitter for many years too. I have always had a passion for animals & strongly believe in animal rights & am a vegetarian. I belong to numerous animal charities & support Viva! Blue Cross, Hillside Animal Sanctuary & IAKA which are the anti Korean Dog meat campaigners.

Barney’s Boarding is in honour of our first funny old fella.
