Welcome to H.D. Hoof Care!
My name is Holly De La Chevrotiere and here is a little story of how I got into trimming horses.
The journey basically started from owning my first horse, an off the track thoroughbred, named Mountain.
After pulling his racing plates off 15 years ago, I'm not gonna lie, it wasn't an easy road to a healthy barefoot. I recall abscess after abscess, and many calls to the vet... I was patient though, to give him time to heal and adjust to his new life off the track. I knew I didn't want to shoe him if he really didn't need to be.
I will say, I wish I knew some of the things that I know now... and not to say that I know everything, cause I am and will always be learning. But I wish I would have known more about nutrition, movement and even other alternative hoof protection, like hoof boots, back then to help make the transition easier for him.
So after years of having farriers trim him on the standard 6-8 week schedule, me feeding whatever feed bag was recommended to me without really looking into ingredients, his hooves weren't in terrible shape, but they still weren't great either. You know, the "typical" thoroughbred feet...
It wasn't until I was introduced to a barefoot trimmer that things really started to click for me.
The results of changing his diet to forage based, and sticking to 4 week trim cycles, (he had already been on 24/7 turn out since owning him) has improved the quality of his hooves so much, with tighter connection of the hoof wall, big healthy frogs, and no more hoof being cracked or chipped off from too much leverage or overgrowth.
I was so pleased to see these results, that I just wanted to learn more and be able to trim him myself as well. So with the guidance of my barefoot trimmer, lots of reading and studying, I picked up a rasp, and now here I am a few years later, trying to help out other horses along the way. :)
I am so grateful for Mountain in my life. His hooves have carried us many miles and places, and now have taught me so much about hoof health and trimming. 💜🐴
I also have a lot of great mentors and clients in my corner to support me, and I am thankful for that.
If anyone would have asked me years ago if I thought I would be trimming, I would have thought they were nuts, haha. It's not in any way easy..but being able to see the change for the better in other horses and the more people are open and see the benefits of their horses being barefoot, makes every drop of sweat worth it to me.
