It doesn’t feel that long ago that we would turn around and leave if there were too many crowds, because Xena wouldn’t be able to cope. But today, when we arrived at Stranraer and realised they were part-way through rowing world championships, we had a wander amongst the crowds and had some lunch before driving somewhere quieter for a calmer walk.

Because that’s where we’re at now with Xena’s training.

If you’re training your dog, remember to keep assessing where they’re at so you can move them on when they’re ready. If you always train the same, you’ll plateau and won’t move forward. And that’s fine, if you’re where you want to be. But if you still have some way to go, you need to keep moving!

Despite the majority of my clients being reactive dogs, I’m yet to meet one who is worse than Xena was. At her worst she was reactive to dogs, people and traffic. Life was stressful, so I totally understand it when clients reach out to me and feel so stressed and unconvinced that their dog can change.

Xena is proof that change is possible. We used to have to avoid going out when it was busy, avoid busy places, miss out. And she wouldn’t take treats so training was tough.

Check her out just this afternoon. Busy visitor centre, near a noisy children’s play area and she was calmly waiting for her mum.

Last Sunday we had the last mantrailing session of the month. Team Luna worked exclusively on urban trails and Luna showed some great confident trailing, especially when she reached the plume and didn’t stop like she used to ⭐️
Team Ghost showed his most confident trailing to date - really focussed on the trail and enjoying himself, despite the many distractions. This was the most motivated we’ve seen him trail yet ⭐️
And Scout was back after a short break for holidays and was super focussed and really enjoying life. Lovely confident junctions, and good puzzle solving ⭐️

Tessa has been mantrailing with me for several months now, and has made fabulous progress along the way. Her mum recently signed her up for scentwork too, to practise alongside her mantrailing. She started her 3 part Introduction to Scentwork just a few weeks ago, and picked things up really quickly in that first session. She’s a quick learner, and she already loves having a second scent sport she can practise even when it’s too hot for walks!!

Last weekend we celebrated summer solstice with a triple trailer for collie teams Dandy, Roscoe, Bobbie & Rodney.

We played about with the trail layers - they were sat, crouching, lying down, and one was even doing a wall sit (which Roscoe found very odd!). We also played about with the scent articles and contamination.

Soooo much learning, an absolutely epic session. So much to be proud of!
