What Is Mantrailing?
What is Mantrailing?
It’s a fun sport where we hide someone and teach your dog to find them by using just their nose to follow the scent for a fab reward.
There is:
•Lots of sniffing
•Problem solving
•Fun
•Teamwork that builds your bond with your dog
All dogs welcome:
•Big breeds
•Small breeds
•Confident dogs
•Nervous dogs
•Reactive dogs
•Sniffy breeds
•Not so sniffy dogs
•Older dogs
•Puppies
Did I mention it’s fun?!
You meet like-minded dog people, work as a team with your dog to grow their confidence, and you help other dogs on their journey too (sometimes puppies!).
The dogs wait their turn in your car, are always on lead, and don’t come into contact with the other dogs, and there is always someone with the cars, making it totally inclusive for reactive/nervous dogs.
So if you fancy something new to do with your dog this new year, we have a few slots on January dates - book via www.bookwhen.com/leadandfollow

What a year 2024 has been! In 2024 a total of 34 different mantrailing teams trailed with us, 29 of those having completed their Introduction to Mantrailing this year! For only the first full year of Lead & Follow that’s amazing, and it’s only the beginning. Announcements coming very soon about how 2025 will be even better 🤩Thank you for the hard work, the fun, and for trusting me with your treasured dogs. Wishing you all a fabulous New Year, and let’s make 2025 even better for you, me and your dogs!! Happy New Year! 🎉🥳🍾
We had our Xmas Trailing Special on Sunday and what a fun morning!
Teams Dandy, Olive & Nanty found all the presents Santa had dropped from his sleigh, including the Elf who was looking for them, and they found Santa himself by using scent articles he’d also dropped along the way - a glove, his driving license, his magic key, a North Pole coin & a Nice medal he must have been hoping to deliver to me!
We had rain, wind, hail and snow, which made the trails very interesting, and the teams aced everything thrown at them.
We finished off with some hot chocolate and snacks with some Xmas tunes while the handlers tried to win a prize for their dog by showing their talent in Santa Darts, Curling and Reindeer Ring Toss (in the wind!).
Team Dandy won the prize but everyone went home with a Xmas goodie bag and a gift from Santa (the least he could do under the circumstances!) 😆
Thank you to all the Teams for making it a great session - the last themed one for 2024 💪🏻⭐️😊

Last week we had a rainy, dark but fabulous session in Urmston, with a mix of rural and town centre trailing for all the dogs. Tessa worked off both a watch strap and a set of keys and her second trail was her first scent article start. SomeLovely trailing from her, she’s becoming much more focused and confident in her trailing and dealt fantastically well with the junctions in the town centre, especially when she went from enclosed street to open square. Snoopy showed his best trailing to date, ignoring food wrappers, working the busy and breezy junctions really well. He was really focussed and confident, great to see!Bobbie was also showing her most focussed and confident self. In the park she was much more controlled than usual, and turned herself round when she’d followed the scent up a dead end. She worked the town centre junctions confidently with no hesitation even in the open square. Fabulous! Osian had to work through frustration when he chose the wrong side of the bushes and could smell trail layer really close but couldn’t find him. He worked through it and quickly realised he could figure it out himself and doubled back round, really nice to see him working through those moments now.His second trail was similar to one he did about 6 weeks ago and it was lovely to see him much more confident in himself, no hesitation, working through the busy town centre area. Fantastic night of trailing! Well done teams 👏🏼🐾🌟
Today Rodney had his first go at a scent article start, and he was so good he did 3!
No hesitation, engaged his nose straight away, and worked methodically until he found his trail layer. He can be reactive and his main triggers are wheels and off lead dogs. He had plenty of those along the trail, and also needed to stop for not one but two poops! So many distractions but he worked through them, and was chuffed with himself when he got his reward.
It’s great to see dogs that struggle with reactivity thriving on their trails, disengaging from triggers and carrying on with the job in hand. And that happy relaxed body language on the way back to the car - priceless! Good job Team Rodney! 🐾👏🏼💪🏻
Mantrailing is great for dogs like Rodney. They take it in turns to trail so they avoid the other dogs, it’s a safe environment for both dog and owner, any type of nose work is great to calm down the over arousal, and by having a job to do, they feel comfortable trailing past triggers - watch Rodney checking out the bikes/dogs, but choosing to carry on trailing 🐾👏🏼
Is your dog reactive to bikes, scooters, dogs, children? Comment below or send us a message and we’ll reach out to explain how mantrailing can help.

Most owners would give their right arm for the level of focus Cece has on her owner, and it’s lovely to see, but on her mantrailing introduction workshop it worked against her a little because she struggled to be independent, to take the first step, to do something without being told. She had moments of joy once she got started on a trail but she struggled with the starts still, a little confused. Fast forward to just her second session and wow, after a few weeks to process her learning, she came out the car, no hesitation to take scent or start trailing, finding unknown people really quickly and engaging that fabulous viszla nose. Now her owners are on the best journey with her - they have beautiful focus when not trailing and when they are, she’s having a blast doing what comes naturally to her while building her self confidence. Congratulations Team Cece on persevering and believing in her - the sky’s the limit now! 🎉⭐️🐾If you want to know more about getting started on your mantrailing journey, message us or comment below and we’ll be in touch 🐾😊#leadandfollowdogtraining #canineenrichment #mantrailing #dogsports #mantrailinguk #mantrailingdogs #domorewithyourdog #reactivedogtraining #positivereinforcement #gamesbasedtraining #funwithyourdog #positivereinforcementdogtraining #reactivedogs #positivedogtraining #mantrailingglobal #dogsofmanchester #dogtraining #dogsofbolton #dogsofsalford #viszlasofinstagram #viszla
The environment can throw up lots of distractions, making it harder for the dogs to disengage from & focus on the task in hand. Reggie loves chasing birds, and they were literally dancing in front of him on Tuesday when he was starting off. Really tough. Check out the video to see how he did ❤️⭐️🐾

It’s moments of calm like this one when I realise and appreciate just how far we’ve come. Xena is 3. Until pretty recently sitting in the garden was stressful, and something we couldn’t enjoy. She would react to all the sounds, neighbours, traffic, birds… Now it’s our haven. I can relax, she can enjoy the sun, we can enjoy each other’s company.
Positive reward based training, including Mantrailing got us where we are now, and will take us to the next step we want too. Understanding the emotion behind the behaviours she was displaying, and working below threshold to calm her down and have her experience life in a non-stressful way for her. We’ve worked on our trust and bond through games, and through mantrailing. She’s a happier and calmer dog, she’s a different dog, in fact in some ways she’s unrecognisable.
When you and your dog are dealing with a lot, often “nothing” is the ultimate goal.
