Last weekend we had our first extended Progression Plus session. Three trails each with a focus on Indicating in a variety of situations to proof each dog’s indication.

We had trail layers standing, crouching, squatting (well done Jack!) and sitting, and the dog’s aced it. We also had a few sneaky decoys standing with the trail layers at the end which had a mixed response, but that’s fine - everything information telling us what we need to work on next with each dog! Most importantly, we had tons of progress from all the dogs 💪🏻

What a fun session to kick off this year’s focus on components with Progression Plus sessions. We had love heart themed snacks and certificates to top off the session and even some love heart poo bags 😂

Well done teams, some reels coming to show off the dogs in the coming days 🐾😊

When you trail with me you have the option to follow the Lead & Follow Progression Badges Scheme. 6 badges to earn (so far), which you can proudly display on your dog’s brand spanking new Lead & Follow bandana*. You tick criteria off as your dog completes them, no assessment needed, and once you’ve ticked all elements off, that badge is yours, along with your certificate.

As an experienced teacher before embarking on a career with dogs, I know how important progression is. One key way to keep your dog loving their trailing sessions is to make sure we’re constantly challenging them in some way, and to do that you need to keep track of what they can already do, and work towards the next thing.

If formal assessments are your thing, great - we can work towards that. But if they make you cringe, sweat or shudder, that’s ok - I’ve got you covered! If you like the structure of working towards goals, but not the pressure of assessments, then this is ideal for you.

Either way, when you trail with me you’ll find a supportive community and instructor to help you and your dog thrive and enjoy your trailing 😊

Message me now to have a chat about starting your very own mantrailing journey with your dog 🐾😊

Did you know that when you come mantrailing you can choose to either just come for fun, or work towards formal assessment levels?

We’re all different. Some people thrive off working towards something, and others prefer to progress while avoiding that kind of external pressure. Both are fine and valid ways to mantrail!

As a Mantrailing Global Assessor, I can guide you through the criteria and towards being ready to take each assessment. I can also assess you and your dog on the day at a time and date that suits you (for level 3 and above you have to be assessed by an independent assessor, but I can help arrange that). I also hold mock assessment days throughout the year open to both my clients and clients of other instructors, so you can test your readiness without the stress of the big day (I’m also happy to travel if your instructor wants to host me as an assessor for the day, just ask them to reach out if that’s something you’re interested in). If you prefer, I can also arrange 1-2-1 assessments if that would make the process easier or less stressful for you.

If you don’t usually trail with me but would like to be notified of future mock assessment and assessment dates, just send me a private message or contact me via www.leadandfollowdogtraining.co.uk/contact

On Saturday morning Scout and Toby were out in the rain and making some amazing progress.

Again Toby showed a more mature side to his trailing, proving last time wasn’t a fluke! Now he’s calmer we’re seeing him settle into his groove, and he’s becoming easier to read, and is much more focussed. He even trailed past a pigeon without a second glance and turned himself round after checking out an exit before choosing the right one ☺️⭐️

Meanwhile Scout was also really focussed and calm, which is lovely to see. She was honing her indication while also working junctions on her trails. She coped well to indicate on a sitting trail layer, and made light work of her junctions after a quick casting exercise at the first one 😊⭐️

Great progress by both teams! 🐾⭐️

Showing Sukha the ropes on Saturday morning we had Teams Osian, Dandy, Nanty, Bobbie & Luna!

Osian made progress with his indication, even managing to indicate on a slope, which he’s found tough! Dandy and Nanty picked up the indicating really well and there was some lovely ground scenting from both. Bobbie was back after a break and with a brand new handler, but it didn’t put her off and she was straight back into the groove. And Luna worked through some tough distractions to find her trail layer, with some lovely ground scenting along the way.

Phew what a session! Well done everyone - fabulous progress from all! 🐾😊⭐️

On Saturday morning the lovely Sukha completed his Introduction to Mantrailing. He’s very fearful of noises currently m, and not able to eat food when outside, but he does love a ball! We were able to use that to our advantage and use play as the reward for finding the trail layer on hunting trails. He was able to enjoy himself, seek out the hidden person and play joyfully with various people, all while scary noises carried on around him. That’s a big deal for Sukha, and already good progress we can build on 😊🐾

Do you have a dog who struggles with anxiety or fear? Message me direct to find out how Mantrailing could help!

Who can guess what’s going on here during Bobbie’s trail on Saturday?!

When you come mantrailing, it’s not just you and your dog. There’s a whole community to support you, have your back, and help your dog thrive. Sometimes that means hiding really well to challenge your dog. Sometimes it means listening to you and following your instructions so your dog isn’t worried by their behaviour. Sometimes it means sitting it out and not watching you trail because your dog doesn’t like being followed. Sometimes it means stepping in when an off-lead dog is approaching, and sometimes it’s just understanding the stresses that having a challenging dog can bring and giving you a time-out from explaining!

All dogs are different and you’ll find a welcoming community regardless of the issues you’re working through. If you’d like to learn more about mantrailing and how it could help you and your dog, message me direct 🐾😊 or if you’d like to book your first Introduction session, go straight to www.bookwhen.com/leadandfollow (direct link in stories and bio)

Showing Misty the ropes last Sunday were Scout, Molly & Romeo. It’s amazing how quickly the “new” dogs become the teachers!

Scout ran into difficulty at a difficult junction and we introduced casting to her team, and she coped really well, very impressive, and now we can build on that to boost her confidence at junctions.
On just her third outing Molly showed us some really clear body language of looking for vs following the trail - that’s going to be useful moving forward, and then some lovely focus on her second trail.
And Romeo on his third session at just 20 weeks showed a huge amount of progress. He was more focussed at the start of the trails, showed us he was using his nose, and after darting up a “wrong turn” stopped when the scent ended, turned himself round and backtracked before picking up the scent again. Wow! So much confidence and understanding!

Well done all 3 teams! Beautiful progress for us to build on next session ⭐️

Sunday morning Misty completed her Introduction to Mantrailing. A scentwork fan, she’s used to using her nose and got stuck in from the start, but the two sports are different & it took her a few turns to figure out the game, and once she did, she was flying. We also learned that liver paté hands down beats cubed cheese, sausage and primula! You can see in the photos how much more joyful and motivated she got with each turn 😊

And this is what the Intro is all about - figuring out how to teach the game to your dog and the best reward for them so they love it and want to keep searching over and over again! If you’d like to give Mantrailing a try there is one slot available on Friday 28th & Saturday 15th: www.bookwhen.com/leadandfollow or message me to join the waiting list for March beginner sessions 🐾😊

We had a fab progression session last week at Victoria Park with teams Osian, Scout, Roscoe and Cece enjoying a quiet and productive morning!

We had a focus on indications, and the return of Roscoe, who at one point carried on trailing as 2 squirrels twerked either side of him! Super impressive. We saw some lovely junctions and indications and some fantastic focus and hard work.

Well done teams - fab job!

Saturday morning we were back in Bury where we had snow, sunshine & some super sniffing!

Showing newbie Angus the ropes were Osian & Molly and it was only Molly’s second time!
Osian had his first go at indicating and after some confused barking, it clicked. Of course it did - he’s a clever boy! By the second trail he was already indicating much quicker, showing off what he’d just learned ☺️

Meanwhile, on her first trail Molly continued to be super excited by everyone and everything, but suddenly, on her second trail, everything seemed to click for her and she was nose down, shush everyone I’m working. What a beautiful moment 👏🏼⭐️😊

This is a lovely quiet venue, perfect if you’re slowly making your dog’s world bigger, or avoiding crowds! We’ll be back here soon, so message me direct if you’d like to join the waiting list for beginners, or fill in the form here:

On Sunday Angus completed his Introduction to Mantrailing and he was a superstar ⭐️

He can be super alert on walks, reactive to both people and dogs, but there were no signs of that as he took in his surroundings, learned the game, and thoroughly enjoyed himself! By the end of the session he was flying around the park finding his trail layers really quickly. Now we know he loves it and understands the game, we just need to slow him down a tad!

Well done Angus!! ⭐️👏🏼😊

This Valentine’s weekend, teach your dog to indicate on the “one”, wherever they may be…

We teach an “indication” so our dogs can tell us when they’ve found the trail layer, not just running up to random people hoping they have food!

In our Indication workshop you will have the opportunity to proof your dog’s indication in different scenarios, so it becomes more reliable and their confidence grows.
Don’t have an indication yet? No problem, we can use the trails to teach it and proof it.

3 trails = 6 opportunities to indicate = supercharge their learning
Certificates will be awarded to those completing their 3 trail workshop, and light refreshments will be provided.
