YES WE DID IT AGAIN

This time we did 25 dogs (10 females and 15 males) and 11 Cats - A GRAND TOTAL OF 36 DOMESTIC ANIMALS ON THE DAY.

A reminder of the stats: a female dog can have over 10 litters in her lifetime. With an average of 3 - 5 puppies per litter. That means an average female dog that is not given adequate food and health care can have up to 6 litters in her lifetime. Lets be conservative and say that we therefore saved 180 puppies from being born. We are not even talking about second and third generations.

Therefore out of two Sterilisation Initiatives the Mpumalanga Compulsory Community Service Vets have sterilised 52 dogs and 16 cats. Providing their time and supplies at no cost!

This is a MASSIVE achievement and could not have been done without the help of the following incredible people:

Elsmarie Owen who allowed us to use her camping site - a perfect and beautiful venue.

Monetary Donations in alphabetical order -
Corné Kruger
Dave Kenyon from Dave Kenyon Optometrist
Fanus Van Der Merwe - the second time that you have donated - thank you so very much.
Ig Labuschagne from NP Wood
JJ Jonker
Leon & Tertia Hansmeyer
Mario Bruno from The Frame Gallery
Myron & Dee Malcomess-Cort
Schoemanskloof Farmer's Association.
Van Wijckstraat Vet - Thank you all so very much with the donation and for the help with a very sick compound puppy!!

Thank you to all of the following people - without whom these initiatives would not happen.

The Mpumalanga Compulsory Community Service Vets, Assistants, Nurses, Supervising Vet and head of Mpumalanga Veterinary Services.
They operated from 07:00 - 15:00 non stop. And I mean non stop.

Amelia & Julia O'Connor - for picking up puppies, making sure that all dogs/cats were identified, aftercare which involved ensuring that the patients received anti tick and flea treatment and de worming tablets, for ensuring that all the patients woke up and were coming out of aenaethesia properly, didn't open their wounds, cleaned those that needed cleaning - for being everywhere and super organised - thank you ladies!!

Elsmarie Owen and her sons Rudi and Phil - for setting up the camp site, putting up gazebo's, creating a recovery area, cordoning off the area so that everyone knew where to go and being super calm and helpful during the day.

Dalene White - for the donation of blankets

Dee Malcomess - being in charge of form signing, for looking after dogs and cats pre and after sterilisation and giving advice to all pet owners.

Erica and Bianka from Sterkspruit Mountain Haven - you know what you did and thank you!!

Falcon Glen Resorts - for the donation of towels.

Marian Cottle from Old Joe's Kaia - for providing dog food and the most divine vegan muffins, hummous and cashew nut cream for the crew to eat - when they had a moment that is.

Midfeeds - for giving us a generous discount on the dog and cat food

Pat Brink - for being in charge of form signing, looking after dogs pre and after sterilisation and generally being a rock.

Philip Ovis - for donating a wonderful platter of delicious wraps and of course letting me drive around and get myself into a general state of "freaked out"

South African Veterinary Association (SAVA) - donating a box of much needed F10 products and giving us a huge discount on anti tick and de worming tablets.

And then all of the dog and cat owners who saw how important it is to have their pets sterilised- without your consent we would not have been able to do this at all.

27 Dogs (13 Males & 14 Females)
5 Cats (2 Females & 3 Males)

The SCHOEMANSKLOOF STERILISATION INITIATIVE therefore sterilised 33 domestic animals
In theory, a female dog can have over 10 litters in her lifetime. With an average of 3-5 puppies per litter.
That means an average female dog that is not given adequate food and health care can have up to 6 litters in her lifetime. Let’s be conservative. So we potentially saved 336 dogs from being born and thus perpetuating the vicious cycle of having abused and hungry dogs that are also used to hunt for their food which means hunting our wildlife.
I won’t even go into the cat statistics.

I would like to say a MASSIVE thank you to EVERY single person that helped on the day and leading up to the initiative. The following people supported me and donated and without them this would not have happened. Each animal when home with enough food for a month, blankets and they were frontlined during after care.

Nelspruit Toyota - Desmond you kicked off the donation box with R5000-00 THANK YOU.

In Alphabetical order:
Gavin Allderman - for your massive donation
Carmen Bekker - for transport, aftercare, loads of bottles of water and chips, her cell phone which was the only one with signal
Charmaine for rescuing and bringing them to be sterilised.
Pat Brink - for donations, care, transport
Dot - for your time, transport and aftercare.
Les & Angie Jones - for bringing in the abandoned mutts that you have taken over and your donation
Kumi Restaurent - for the coffee and muffins
Jaco Le Roux - for setting up the tent
Gavin McKellar - for your donation
Midfeeds Nelspruit - for giving us a generous discount on food, blankets and Frontline
Dennis Nkahle - for taking me around the community and convincing owners to take the plunge. For being a massive support on the day.
Carol Nkalanga - Wow you rock woman. For taking me to Mashobotho, for convincing owners, for transporting animals, for your support
Jill Sheard - for your very generous donation
Julia & Amelia O’Connor - for transport and aftercare and being bitten in the process - sorry about that.
Brendan O’Kelly - for setting up the tent and letting me use his Wi-Fi when there was no signal
Philip Ovis - for your donations, your time, your caring of both me and the dogs (you are truly the bestest husband in the world)
Elsmarie Owen - for transport and guidance and originally setting the sterilisation ball in motion in Sudwala
Schoemanskloof Farmers Association for the tent, tables and chairs
Fanus van der Merwe - for bringing in Hilux and your massive donation.
Johan Van Zyl - for setting up the tent
Viva Schoemanskloof - for the location

Every community member who put their pets lives in our hands and gave permission and every other helper who selflessly helped: Sergio, Evans, Friday ….

And the Mpumalanga CSS Vets - 9 vets, 5 nurses and 4 interns - All of whom worked flat out from 07:00 - 15:00 non stop in a dusty, hot environment in an army tent. What an incredible achievement. THANK YOU. YOU ARE ALL TROJANS.

There are so many more dogs that need to be sterilised. So many owners that need to be educated. So many lessons learnt by me - let’s do another one in 6 months time. You can start donating now!!!

Sudwala Dogz is a non profit organization in Mpumalanga.
They donate dog food and proper shelter to dogs from the Mankelele Community to ensure these pets stay home and not wander onto the highway between Sudwala and Mbombela (Nelspruit), in search of food.
We would like to thank each and everyone that keep the Sudwala Dogz rescue service active, because of your donations.

Thank you, Midfeeds Nelspruitfor donating bags of dog food we truly appreciate it!

We rescued this litter of puppies. Being fostered by a volunteer until we find a home for each of them. Don’t they just look like happy puppies after a bath!
