Yeah, nah. Don’t leave your dogs in the car for more than 5 minutes or so. It’s ( literally) not cool, even in Dunedin.

Leaving your inside a vehicle on a warm day is extremely dangerous - even with the windows cracked open. Dogs struggle to regulate their body temperature and can quickly overheat. Don't risk your dog's health this .

You could face a $300 fine if you leave your dog unattended in a car.

If you're worried about a dog locked in a car, please call the Police or your local SPCA immediately.

**update on availability**

As I’m now working full time and on different/rotational shift patterns I’m putting Kate's Peninsula Pet Home Visits on hold for a bit. I’m going to miss my wonderful wee furry friends! This is my long term goal though, to be “The Lady With The Food And Cuddles” so I’m not deleting my page. If my availability changes I’ll post here. AND: let me know if you’re really stuck for an in-home pet person, as I may know people who can help or can squeeze you in perhaps (no promises though!)

❤️ Thank you everybody and your furry folk - I’m REALLY going to miss my regulars! ❤️

(Note all existing bookings still stand 🌸)

The SPCA in New Zealand is spreading lies and propaganda in opposition to the life of the racing greyhound.

Make no mistake, their intention to end the sport comes with the consequence of the extinction of the greyhound breed as we know it.

The greyhound is a placid, gentle, even-tempered and calm animal. A well-rounded individual, able to fit into a family, stay home alone, needing low exercise and asking only for gentle loving companionship. The greyhound is this way BECAUSE of its early life - the way it grows up, with its canine family, safe and learning the skills it needs.

The SPCA advocates tearing pups from their families at a young age, before they have learned what they need, before they can develop emotionally. Greyhound pups raised this way will not be the calm, loving dogs we know today.

Racing greyhounds receive overwhelming amounts of love and affection, as well as top quality care, in their pre-racing lives as juveniles. The SPCA denies that this is the case due to the love looking like:
-Proper, controlled exercise suitable for growing joints - NOT overexercising a baby puppy in a dog park
-Socialization within the litter and with parents and related friendly, gentle adult pets - NOT overwhelming a pup with strange experiences in unplanned and unsafe ways
-A proper, species appropriate, balanced diet informed by veterinary advice, suited for each stage of growth - NOT handfuls of supermarket treats and bags of dog food determined by price point
-Careful exposure and training to the new parts of pup’s life in a planned and managed way - NOT random trips to supermarkets and pet stores with no thought for pup’s emotional well-being

Pet life can be hard for dogs, especially puppies. The SPCA paints pet life with uninformed public as the “ideal” while conveniently ignoring its own overflowing shelters and horrific euthanasia rate.

Racing life, on the whole, is structured, comfortable, and overseen by veterinary advice at every turn. Racing dogs do not go hungry or cold, they need not be rescued from backyards with no shelter, they are not life-chained, they are not used as playthings by children nor beaten by those who are entrusted with their care.

This industry is fully regulated and the dogs born into it are tracked and cared for their entire lives. Adoption agencies which are fully funded by the industry itself take greyhounds who have finished racing and support them into pet homes - and take them back if owners’ circumstances change. We at Nightrave are one of such agencies. The industry funded rehab programme provides full care for dogs who sustain injuries while competing, rehabilitate them and then place them into pet homes.

Meanwhile, thousands of pet dogs languish in untenable conditions, without needed vet care, while the SPCA stands idly by, or worse, turns away desperate owners who are literally begging them for help. They are closing shelters nationwide and planning on selling land donated to them by communities, while at the same time spending frivolously on campaigns such as this - all the while leaving tiny community shelters to take on their actual role of caring for animals in need.

The SPCA want you to give them money to destroy the lives of greyhounds, to literally sentence an entire breed to extinction, while they leave animal abusers unprosecuted, and turn away animals in actual desperate need.

They are using public money on a frivolous and malicious campaign, against an industry already under review, who care far more for their dogs than the SPCA can comprehend.

Cats may be put off drinking near their food due to the smell or because they perceive the water to be contaminated because it is close to the food. In the wild, cats eat their prey away from water sources to avoid contamination and this is true of domestic cats. To combat this, place alternative bowls of water around your house.
Your kitties will thank you 😽

Hi team - on the look out for any small-ish teddys/fluffy toys for wee ducklings and signets for the amazing Sue Cook at Bird Rescue Dunedin. I’m happy to be a drop off point (I’m at Mac Bay) if you have anything suitable? Please message me for address 🦢🦆🐤🪶🦢🐥🦆

I’ve been busy of late! I’ve had some beautiful pusscats 🐈🐈‍⬛ to care for while their lovely mum was away for work; plus some birdies 🦜🦜 while their mum was away for fun; and a lovely doggo 🐶 who’s people went overseas (because we can now!!!) (and who’s care was shared with the lovely Beau & Co. Dog Adventures) and a bunny 🐰 who’s mum ended up on the wrong side of COVID 🫣

Being busy has been good for me as in the last week I’ve also had to help my gorgeous and much adored 16 yo pusscat gain her wings and cross the 🌈 bridge. It’s been torture, but the right choice for her. I just love our older pusscats - such wise wee souls 💔❤️‍🩹

Always here (well, mostly!!) so shout if you need any in home visits to your furry, feathered or critter family!

This!! ❤️

This!! ❤️

We’ve noticed recently a lot of posts on community Fb pages advertising kids to walk dogs.

Don’t get us wrong, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to earn some pocket money or get that ‘first job’ experience on your CV. And there are a lot of well behaved dogs and capable kids out there.

What is concerning are the amount of owners seeing a bargain (most of these junior dog walkers are offering 30mins walks for $5). These owners are then expecting someone without any experience in critical thinking or emergency situations to walk their 25kg, medium sized, lead pulling, over excited dog.

All we ask is:
- parents, is your child mentally and physically capable of taking on the responsibility?
- owners, is the child walking your dog able to handle most situations thrown at them when out walking your dog?

If the answer is Yes, brilliant (but pay the walker their monetary worth!!)

If the answer is No, then find a walker who is capable of handling your dog.

So many great tips!

So many great tips!

Is your kitty missing? 😿

An extremely important step in finding a missing cat and is often overlooked.

Perform a thorough search of your own property.
Search your own property (inside and out) thoroughly. A cat who has been spooked can hide in silence in a cupboard or under a bed and be mistaken for missing.

Search your local area
When cats go missing it is very common that they are within a 5 house radius of their usual territory and are generally hiding in silence.
Therefore we recommend that you also search, with the owner’s consent, the properties within a 5 house radius of your cats territory (many cats territory is their own backyard). Be sure to look “in and under” e.g. in sheds, under decks etc as these are common places that cats will hide.

Try searching at night
Cats may also venture out of their hiding place at night – try performing a night time search using a spotlight to try and pick up your cat's eye glow.

Search quietly and calmly
Avoid calling for your cat, banging tins of cat food with a spoon etc. A hiding cat is already frightened, and noise (even familiar sounds like their name being called by their favourite human) typically just frightens them more so they are even less likely to come out.

Cats can hide for a long time
If you don’t find your cat straight away, don’t be discouraged. It is common for a cat to hide for 3-10 days before finally feeling calm enough (and hungry enough!) to venture out. We recommend you perform a thorough search of the area every 24-48 hours for the first 2 weeks.

In the mean time - post on your community pages, including "Lost pet page", update your pets microchip on the national register as to the fact they are missing, posters on lamp posts can work a charm and alert your local council, Vet and Spca.

If you have recently moved house, cats will often make their way back to their old dwelling. A great place to check out too.

The pet sitter’s looking for a pet/house sitter!! 🐈‍⬛ 🏠 🐓

Wondering if anybody would be available to visit and feed my very very precious, indoors-only and aging pusscat while I nip across the ditch to visit my equally as precious and aging dad around early/mid June? ☺️ 😻 Also would require feeding 6 chooks. I’m at Mac Bay.

(Happy to consider a house sitter if anybody knows of a really good one - pm me?)

Thanks!

🚨 Peeing puppies need papers! 🚨

Can you help Nichols out with any old newspapers?

19/05/2020

Hey cool cats and kittens..! (sorry...)

Don't panic or anything, but Queen's 👑 Birthday 🎂 weekend is coming up and I'm pretty sure nobody needs to spend more time at home, which means there's plenty of plans being made for a vacay somewhere ✈️🏍🚲🛶⛺️🚗.

I thought I'd remind pet owners that I'm available as the local pet spoiler 🤩 and pamperer 😽 - so, if you need somebody to administer goodies 🦴🍗🍪 and keep an eye on the furkids while you're off having fun (😳 don't feel guilty!) I can help.

Note, I don't do housesitting/petsitting (although might know people who can if you're looking), and I can't look after your pets/critters at my place sadly (YET!) - but I can come to yours and feed/water/ administer the pats and cuddles while you're away.

PM me if you'd like more info, rates, availability, special requests etc. Happy to help!

Soooo....my Otago Peninsula neighbours and friends know that I'm available for in-home pet care (feeding, watering, bedding and litter changes, cuddles etc) when they go on holidays for short periods (overnight and up to 10 days). I've created this page so people can easily get in touch and know how to find me. I'm happy to help non-Peninsula friends as well (within reason!) so if you need somebody to feed the cat/s; bunnies; guinnea pigs, chooks, etc I'm here to help and happy to chat.

In-home visits for Peninsula Pets

I’m available to provide basic care and attention for the small furry family members while you’re away. I’m able to look after feeding, watering, cuddles and playtime, basic medication administration, litter and bedding changes and just generally checking in and making sure all’s well, while you’re on a break. Cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, chooks, ducks, and similar fur friends all catered for, and I’m happy to discuss needs for other pets including dogs (but note, I don’t offer dog walking at this stage - I have my own who need me to conserve my energy for her!

I live locally at Macandrew Bay and am happy to provide in-home visits for those living on the Peninsula and direct surrounds. Happy to discuss other areas on a case by case basis.

Rates are negotiable, but around $10 per visit for one pet up to about 5 days; $17 per visit for two pets. 10% discount for more than 5 days (but only up to 10 days as longer than that may be a stretch for your furry family member - but I know good housesitters if you need somebody for longer!)

Please message me if you’d like to chat or would like any further information about how I can help :)
