Hi everyone,

As of June 1st, I will no longer be taking grooming appointments. As much as I’ve enjoyed grooming, it’s time for me to focus more on training and my job at the Animal Orphanage. I will keep my current clients that have monthly appointments, but that is all. Thankful for all the love and support I’ve received and I’m very excited for the next part of my journey!

If you are looking to book training sessions, please feel free to reach out 😌

Hi everyone,

Many people who see my page think I’m just a dog groomer, so I figured I’d share my story and what I am working toward becoming.

I have two rescues, Unes & Percy. Both suffered a really hard life before I adopted them. Unes was abused & forgotten. Percy was dragged behind a truck 18 blocks, suffering severe physical and mental damage. Unes had severe stranger reactivity. Percy was reactive to absolutely everything. When I adopted them, I had very little experience and knowledge of dog behavior. I spent 3 years prior studying elephants, so my expertise was very different than reactive dogs.

When I first started studying animal behavior and fear reactivity, suddenly my dogs behaviors made sense, finally I could do something to help them. I hired trainers, I studied, I worked my b***y off to figure out how I could help them, and once I understood why they were the way they were, I became a trainer. But I still didn’t think that was enough, so I found work in doggy daycares and rescue. I still don’t think that’s enough. I continue to form connections and study and I am constantly learning what I can do to help my dogs and other dogs. Now my dogs have grown tremendously and while Unes is a perfect angel, Percy has neurological damage and may never be able to overcome his fear. I used to blame myself, because I wasn’t an expert, I didn’t have any knowledge, I was afraid I couldn’t give him the life he deserved. Now I know I do everything possible for him and honestly? He’s the best boy, he just has issues.

In 3-5 years I will have gained enough resources, knowledge & connections to build a safe place for dogs with severe reactivity. A place where people and dogs both will be able to learn how to handle reactivity, fear aggression, and overcome the obstacles dogs experience in life.

I am only at Step 3: Work & gain knowledge in rescue, of my 10 step plan, but I am closer than I’ve ever been. People see reactive dogs and they immediately think “put that dog down” or “your dog is out of control” and I plan to help change the way reactive dogs are seen & understood.

UP & Onward is a grooming & training service but will soon be a dedicated rehabilitation center, rescue and safe space for severely fear reactive dogs. Every time someone books a grooming or training appointment with me, that money goes towards this goal & I am incredibly thankful to be on this journey 🐾😌

Something to think about! Training is always a great way to teach your pups, but making sure their basic needs are met is key 🙂

If you’re thinking you need help with some training ‘issues’, firstly make sure your dog’s basic needs are being met.

Are they getting adequate physical exercise? If you’ve got a border collie and they’re housebound most of the day. There’s your first problem.

Are they getting proper nutrition? If you’re feeding them kibble, check the ingredients list, not the words on the front of the packaging. If you can, ask around and speak with a nutritionist to get their take on things. I’m no expert on this, however if you’d like to know what we feed our guys, it’s ORIJEN Dog and Cat Food from Nature's Ki - Pet Wellbeing.

Are they feeling safe and secure on a daily basis or are you exposing them to things they can’t yet cope with and therefore feel the need to react in certain situations or towards certain things?

Are they mentally stimulated and/or enriched daily? Dogs are a lot smarter than we like to admit. A walk around the block won’t cut the mustard for a lot of dogs. They need to use their brains more. Just like some of us like to read a book or solve a puzzle, dogs also like to figure things out and get things right. It feels good for all species.

Some food for thought.

As many of you know, I recently took a job as the manager of the Animal Orphanage in Old Town. This position will allow me to work closely with our adoptable dogs as well as give me more experience and resources for my ultimate goals.

I'm always looking to educate myself further so that I can be as successful and knowledgeable in my field as possible, so recently I took a course that specifically targets working with shelter dogs and successfully passed this morning. I'm eager for this opportunity and excited to see where it takes my career.

A reminder that I am taking new clients for basic obedience training and I have week nights and weekend appointments available!

Sometimes we misunderstand dogs & that’s okay! We just have to keep learning every day 🐾

Sometimes we misunderstand dogs & that’s okay! We just have to keep learning every day 🐾

Dogs behave the way they do for many reasons. They do NOT do things deliberately to be stubborn or ‘naughty’, nor do they aim to assert control. Outdated mythologies and training methods have detrimental effects on well-being and strain the relationship between a dog and their caregiver.

🧬A dog's breed and genetic makeup can play a significant role in determining certain behavioural traits. Dogs have genetic predispositions and breed-specific tendencies that contribute to their behaviour.
Some breeds are predisposed to specific behaviours, such as herding, hunting, or guarding.

The environment in which a dog is raised and lives can profoundly impact their behaviour. Early socialisation, which involves exposing a puppy to a wide range of people, animals, and environments during their critical developmental period, is crucial for building confidence and shaping a dog's social behaviour to reduce fear or aggression.

Overstimulation can cause all kinds of unwanted behaviours as it overwhelms their senses and can lead to hyperactivity or erratic responses. For example, if a dog is exposed to loud noises, multiple people, and various stimuli all at once, or on a daily basis, they might exhibit excessive excitable behaviour, poor impulse control, become agitated and exhibit behaviours like jumping, barking, or pulling on the leash, as their senses are overwhelmed by the excessive input.

Previous experiences and learning consequences can influence a dog's behaviour. Traumatic experiences, in particular, can lead to fear, anxiety, or aggression.

How a dog is trained and educated by their caregiver or handler can significantly affect their behaviour. Consistent, positive reinforcement-based training can lead to desired behaviours, while harsh or inconsistent methods can result in confusion or fear.

A dog's health, including their physical and mental well-being, can influence their behaviour. Illness, pain, or discomfort can lead to changes in behaviour.

A dog's emotional state, including fear, anxiety, and excitement, can affect their behaviour. For example, a fearful dog may display unpredictable defensive reactive behaviours or might avoid any encounters and run away trying to hide. While a confident dog may exhibit playfulness and a relaxed demeanour.

A dog can become frustrated and destructive if their mental and physical needs are not met. This dog, full of pent-up energy and boredom, may become frustrated and exhibit poor impulse control. In their frustration, they might resort to destructive behaviours, such as chewing furniture, digging up the garden, or incessant barking. This destructive behaviour is often an expression of their frustration and an attempt to alleviate their built-up energy and mental stress.

The type of diet a dog receives can significantly influence their behaviour, with high-quality nutrition promoting better energy levels, mood, and overall well-being, while poor diet choices can lead to issues like irritability, hyperactivity, or digestive problems.

As dogs age, they may experience canine cognitive decline, which can manifest as changes in memory, learning, and behaviour. This condition can lead to increased confusion, disorientation, and altered social interactions in older dogs.

It is really important to understand that each dog is unique, and their behaviour can vary widely, even within the same breed. Dogs use body language, vocalizations, and other forms of communication to express their needs, emotions, and intentions. Understanding a dog's communication cues is essential for interpreting their behaviour.
