Miss thang and her mini me! These two are practically joined at the hip anymore and we wouldn’t want it any other way. Good herd dynamics are absolutely vital to the physical and mental well being of a horse. We take a lot of pride in having a calm and relaxed herd and knowing they all get along. And on occasion we get to see really special bonds form between some of them. ❤️

Abner and Kaberet are drastically different in size and still best of friends!

Sync being Sync is the best part of everyday!

This sweet boy got his hooves trimmed by our incredible farrier last night! Sync has maintained perfect soundness following a string of injuries last year and it is without a doubt thanks to our incredible team of vets, farrier, and patience.

Our newest troublemaker is settling in well! Today we’re updating our paddock so he can’t wander out haha! He is very sweet and loves pets but you can definitely tell he is unsure and new to this. We’re so excited to work with him. The girls got a head start last night working on him picking up the feet and leading around!

A beautiful day for some light cleaning and more organizing! Prepping to stock up on some hay and meet our new friend! The weather was perfect! We also got the chance to walk around our pastures and preform some safety checks, remove rock and debris, and prep for some fence maintenance.

Our white board hasn’t been updated yet but our incredible little community completely rebuilt a couple sections of the barn last weekend including our feeding area! Our medical supplies were organized, feed, tack, cleaning supplies, and more! Up next we’re tackling the stalls with some flooring and hardware updates!

Wishing our gentle giant the very best in his new journeys. Perri crossed the rainbow bridge at 1:30pm today following a diagnoses of what vets believe is cancer. We are so sad to say goodbye but so happy for the time we got with him. Our first retiree of many. Rest easy sweet boy 💙

As if my fiancé couldn’t get any better…

He also spent the afternoon repairing our small paddock and prepping for the Fourth of July safety plan. We have some horses that are known to be sensitive to fireworks so we have to bring them indoors this weekend! Axel managed to;

• Repair the small paddock
• Get hay into both fields
• Hang new box fans in each stall
• Clear out the stalls and load with bedding
• Repair the water hose
• and took Perri to Cornell this morning!

What an incredible guy 😍❤️

A huge thank you to my fiancé Axel, our forever amazing neighbor Chris, and Cornell Farrier Services for all their help today!

Perri is working very hard on building trust with us but unfortunately sometimes timing can be an issue especially for mandatory maintenance care. Our amazing farrier was putting in lots of time with us to help Perri get his feet in good shape. But due to trying to schedule around life and Perri feeling better we needed some big guns! Cornell was able to squeeze us in to use their stocks and get a full evaluation on Perri.

While we’re so thrilled he’s feeling much better it also comes with the side effect that he’s more stubborn and has the power to remain stubborn. Using the stocks to aid in his trims provides safety and comfort to him as well as the farrier. Cornell also gives us the opportunity to help students learn! We have many new challenges to overcome as Perri feels better but we love this cranky old man and will continue to provide everything he needs!

Again we are so grateful for everyone that helped us out today and their continued support of our rescue efforts.

We are planning to share about some of the supplements our horses are on and the importance behind them for the next few weeks! Starting with a Finger Lakes Favorite - Selenium + Vitamin E!

Before owning horses I was extremely fortunate to meet both the team at Ithaca Equestrian Center and at Painted Bar Stables. Both are strong examples of horsemanship and quality care. They took the time to explain Selenium to me and why it was so important for my horses' overall health.

Being in the Finger Lakes we have a low amount of Selenium that naturally occurs within our soil meaning our horses aren't receiving enough of it when foraging. It's important for horse owners to not only test their horses to see what they are absorbing but to also know the area of where they are. We can test soil, hay, grain, and more to understand where our horses' diets are lacking and better understand how to counteract this.

You can read all about Selenium here:

Well unfortunately for Abner the burdock checks are mandatory so the silly comb overs are also mandatory. Makes them more fun since we get a good laugh 😅😂

On a side note: don’t forget to check under your horses’ manes for those buggers! They can be very painful especially when they become a tangled mess. Cowboy magic and a good comb will fix it all! (I’d like Cowboy Magic to sponsor me anyday now 🤪)

Heat and humidity have returned to the Midwest! Horses can acclimate to hot and humid weather conditions; however, air temperature and relative humidity can affect your horse’s ability to cool themselves.

It is recommended to avoid (or use caution when) riding or exercising a horse when the combined air temperature (in Fahrenheit) and relative humidity (%) surpass 150. For example, if the temperature is predicted to be 92 F with 69% relative humidity, the combination of the two is 161.

When the air temperature + relative humidity is less than 130, horses are very effective at cooling themselves. Between 130 and 150, a horse’s ability to cool themselves is decreased. When the combination is greater than 150, a horse’s ability to cool themselves is greatly reduced, and if the combination is greater than 180, conditions could become fatal if the horse is stressed.

*FIELD ORNAMENTS*

"I really love my horse but I don't have the time /lost the confidence to ride him - I don't want to part with him but I feel so guilty that he's being wasted in the field when I know he's got so much potential - he could be an amazing horse for someone" - I see these sentences on the horse groups constantly.

Humans are feeling guilty for not riding their horses.

Humans actually believing that horses are having their potential wasted if they're not ridden.

Many of these humans will part with their horse plainly and simply because of the pressure that the society puts on them to ride the horses. The pressure from friends and family - "why don't you ride him ? If he's not ridden you're wasting your money / he'd be better off with someone who will give him the time he needs (to be ridden). "

People need to wake up. Horses are not born to be ridden. Riding and using horses in a means of transport /working animals are over (at least in the modern world) - we have cars, bikes, train , airplanes, machines.

Horses now are used mostly for our own entertainment - whether it's taking part in competitions or riding for pleasure. Back in the day our quality of life / means of making money dependent on horses. Our future dependent on them - they were used in wars for centuries.

Now their lives depend on us.

When you feel you can't ride anymore for any reason please understand that it's ok.

You don't need to ride - more - your horse's happiness is not rooted it being ridden - you will find it's actually quite opposite.

If you have all the abilities to keep your horse despite not riding him please do so - only this way you will ensure his future.

There are so many exciting ways to be with horses that don't involve riding - going on walks together, spending time in the field, playing cognitive games, finding ways to enrich their lives.

Please be your horse's best friend, forever - just like he's been yours ....

There is nothing wrong with *field ornaments*
