Cooler nights bring bigger appetites.

Harley has been loving a mix of the Turkey and Standard blends the last few days. I also contribute the empty bowls to the cooler nights we have been getting because this boy does not eat when it's hot, no matter how good the food is.

Some great tips!

Do you have trouble getting that bowl licked clean with your pets!? These might be some helpful tips👇🏼

🥩Variety! Changing up or incorporating multiple proteins in each meal gives your pets a variation of not only taste, but nutritional profiles. Chicken every day can get monotonous- try adding in tripe or switching it up with a deluxe day!

🍗Texture! Some pets prefer their raw 100% frozen, some 100% thawed and some in between. Play with texture to see which way your furry friends prefer.

🍖Enrichment! Try stuffing your pets meal into a Kong, licky mat or marrow bone for meal time enrichment and stimulation. Who doesn’t love games!?

☀️Remember- a lot of pets eat LESS when it’s hot out... with the weather lately, it wouldn’t be a huge shock to see decreased appetite within reason.

🐶If all else fails, please remember... A HEALTHY DOG WILL NOT STARVE ITSELF! Try not to cater to your dogs food refusal by offering alternate food. A whole separate post will be done on this topic but these “solutions” can actually create or exacerbate picky eating behaviors🙈

Today features the meal of the least food motivated dog you will ever meet, Harley.

Tonight we have Standard and my secret weapon to getting this guy to eat enough, tripe. It may smell a little bad to us but it's a favourite with my dogs.

Also because if I don't mix it all together he will eat the tripe and leave everything else 😄

Look at these! Bones are a great and yummy way for dogs to clean their teeth 😁

Okay, I know I’ve switched up bones a few times but we FINALLY found a supplier that we LOVE (and more importantly CQC Charlie loves🤣) so here’s the low down on bones from now on!

We will carry bags of small, medium, large & rib bones as well as 40lb cases of miscellaneous bones. Photos are below with a medium coffee cup to show scale. All bags will be one FLAT PRICE as well as one flat price for the cases. (message to ask!😊)

Charlie had a BLAST putting together bags today, and I threw in a pic of him showing off his seriously pearly white chompers 😉 (he’s 4 in November but has never shown any signs of tartar or discoloration on his teeth... thank you bones 🤩)

We 'may' have gotten carried away with ordering a freezer full of Prairie Raw pre-mades, all 600+ pounds, or did we? 😁 Our other freezer in the background has all our bits and pieces for our DIY meals. After years of making our own balanced meals for our many dogs and cats, it's a bit luxurious to have pre-mades so readily available 😍 Would you like to try a sample, or jump in and switch to raw food for your dog or cat? This weeks features the lone house dog, Bandit. Today Bandit is getting the Prairie Raw turkey grind, a veggie mix, and an egg. She gets to use a slow feeder bowl since she eats so fast and forgets to chew her food 😄 When we first brought Bandit home from the rescue, she was a chubby pupper but raw eating has slimmed this girl down and put some beautiful muscle on her.

Can I feed my pets raw food and manufactured pet food at the same time? In our opinion any added raw foods is a good thing. There are several different schools of thought on mixing raw food and kibble from never feed kibble never ever to feeding a mix of raw and kibble every feeding (dogs with sensitive systems may need to have 25% or less raw food with their kibble). When we rescued our Pyrenees cross she was skin and bones and needed a very high calorie diet. For the first 6 months she was on 2 meals a day plus snacks, one raw and one kibble. We did this because she needed so much food and the cost of feeding her was up there. Once she got to a proper weight and health, her food requirements lessened and she is now fed full raw. As pet parents, we try to do our best with the resources and knowledge we have.

Today for , we have some Prairie Raw grind, we also have some eggs, a joint supplement and kelp. For the big guy (Harley), he got PR Deluxe while the other two got Turkey, Harley prefers red meats but I always make sure he gets multiple proteins. Everyone got an egg, or two, which are really good for their coats health. Now for the supplements, we've got kelp and joint health support. Kelp is known for its iodine, which promotes healthy thyroid function and all of the dogs get that. Harley (1.5 years) and Shep (14.5) get the joint supplement, Harley since he is growing and Shep because she is so old and could use whatever help she can get 😄

And then, just to keep it real, I have an after photo of Harleys' bowl and how I actually feed it to him. He is not food motivated, so while not catering to his pickiness, I do mix some of it together. Some days he will eat an egg by itself and other days he wants nothing to do with it, so I mix it up for him.

There are so many ways to feed our pets. Most raw feeders follow the PMR or BARF model. PMR is Prey Model Raw and at its core is 80% muscle meat, 10% soft raw edible bone, and 10% organ. BARF is Biologically Approved Raw Food and it is PMR but with added appropriate veggies, fruits, and seeds. So the question is, which one? Our suggestion is to try one of these models and see how your pet performs on the change of diet. Our LGDs and cats are fed PMR, while our house dog does better on a BARF diet. We check body condition and condition of bowel movements regularly which helps us to determine whether or not we need to change something in their diet. If you have questions we would love to help 😊

Look what we got! A new freezer to store our large amounts of raw foods for our pets and for you! Our smaller freezer was dying so we decided to buy the biggest residential freezer we could find 😄 We are impatiently waiting out the 48 hours until we can plug it in and fill it up🥩🐶🐱

This is what a typical bowl looks like for these guys, we don't get too fancy around here 😄 Tonight they are getting a mixture of the Deluxe and Turkey Prairie Raw grinds with some joint supplements for the old girl and the massive pup. They are also getting some garlic in proper amounts with their suppers for the next two weeks, to hopefully discourage the ticks 😕 After that they will be getting it once a week for maintenance.
