Ironwood German Shepherds One day maybe one of their puppies will be a part of yours. Here at Ironwood German Shepherds the pedigree is good, really good but temperament is key to us.

We love German Shepherds and will raise one or two good litters a year here in the beautiful Mission Valley. Our dogs are AKC registered and a huge part of our family. It’s our goal to produce well balanced ,dependable beautifully confident brainy dogs perfect for your family. We will never be a big breeding operation, but will have a couple of nice litters a year God willing. We are so thankful, a

nd really want the best for our babies, we’ve been blessed and have an amazing extended family because of our commitment to producing the best puppies for them. German Shepherds are fearless and will loyally protect their families. That does not mean that they are mean, aggressive dogs. A well balanced dog that has been trained and socialized from a young age has a protective instinct and will alert and guard their family if any intruder should come along.

The German Shepherd Dog
"If any breed of dog is most deserving of the title Noble with Natural Beauty then that dog is the German Shepherd. They are a dog with elegant yet flowing lines, glamorous to behold, with a shining coat, erect ears, and an intelligent expression that will command attention wherever they are seen. Their eyes indicate the love and affection they have for those who care for them and their sweeping tail will show their mood whether it be happy or sad. By nature a German Shepherd is wary of strangers, though once one is accepted by them they are a friend for life. They are efficient obedience worker, quick to learn and what is learned will never be forgotten. It is an active breed and thrives on work—little is beyond its capabilities. Fleet of foot, powerful yet graceful and nimble, they are the epitome of those qualities considered to be ideal within a dog. They love human companionship and will respond to his owner’s mood whether this be lying quietly by his side or romping across the fields; indeed, at all times, their one desire is to be with you and to please you. They have a keen sense of humor and enjoys playful games yet, in defense of those he/she loves, can become a frightening adversary that one would be well advised to keep clear of. They can fit into a flat or a mansion as the need may be, for they are happy wherever you are happy. In bringing a German Shepherd into your home, you are making an addition to your family and they will quickly feel a part of it. Your house, your garden, your possessions and in fact all that you own will from then on be in their special care. They need your love, but he/she needs also correct attention to their grooming, exercise, food, and general welfare. Given these, your German Shepherd will devote their very life to you and you will be the richer for this and for the companionship and love you both will share."

Liberty is a pup we whelped, she will be 2 the end of December and is looking, due to no fault of her own, for a new home. She has been such a wonderful companion to her owner, loves camping and kids. She’s definitely a puppy still strong and active. Not spayed yet due to our contract.
PM me for more information, she is in Billings Montana.

This may be the hardest thing I’ve ever posted, but Shaina and I have decided to stop breeding Shepherds, I’m close to retirement and really want to be able to travel, and Shaina wants to go to school too. It’s been a wonderful 5 years. A true blessing and we believe in our heart that this chapter in our lives has come to an end, a happy end though!!!

This was an interesting article!!

Adolescence occurs between six months and 18 months of age—a time when guardians typically struggle the most with their dogs. Some guardians are so overwhelmed and underprepared for this developmental stage of their dog’s life, they choose to surrender the dog to a local shelter or rescue group. In a recent study published in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science found that the majority of the surrendered dogs (47.7 percent) ) were between 5 months and 3 years of age (M.D. Salman,John G. New, Jr.,Janet M. Scarlett,Philip H. Kass,Rebecca Ruch-Gallie &Suzanne Hetts, 2010)

The neurobiology of adolescence is fascinating, with some key events that alter both the structure and function of the brain.

During canine adolescence, changing s*x hormones effect the animals stress responses. Adolescent dogs have a decreased ability to process information they are receiving from the environment including the presence of dogs, vehicles, people, or really anything around them. They behave in ways that might feel frustrating or upsetting for the dog’s person.

The connectivity between the frontal cortex (responsible for decision making) and amygdala (responsible for emotional processing) decreases, resulting in less behavioral control. We see increased risk taking and more sensitivity to fear.

So what does this mean? This could mean that what was once no big deal to the dog now feels scary; what was once easy to do is now stressful; what once made sense is now confusing. At times, the world can feel like ‘too much’ for the adolescent dog.

As your puppy undergoes this transition into adulthood their inner world is intense, even chaotic. Many pet owners experience an increase in undesirable behavior and find themselves becoming increasingly frustrated. In turn, our own frustration and impatience can cause us to act unpredictably. This adds to our puppy’s inner turmoil. When the inside and the outside are both unpredictable it can be difficult for our dogs to adjust.

If you have an adolescent dog, what can you do? You can give your dog the time and space to observe what is going on around them when on leash at a distance away from the activity when possible. You can give your dog long walks to sniff and explore in nature, giving their brain time to decompress. You can offer your dog a quiet space to sleep so that they can consolidate memories effectively. You can continue training various skills, breaking them down into easier steps that can be generously reinforced.

By understanding what our adolescent dog is experiencing we gain greater compassion and understanding. When we approach adolescence with patience we create a world that is predictable and gentle so our puppies grow up to be their best adult selves.

In the first few months of life the brain develops at a phenomenal rate, with thousands of new neuronal connections being made every second. In this way the foundations are laid for later life learning, memory, health and behavior, and early life experience shapes the individual.
