Smooth Moves Dog Training is so excited to welcome back Kaimen Miller to Flint Creek Dogs Inc. on October 21-23! We absolutely loved having Kaimen in March and are so excited she’s coming back for us in October 🥳

We have a couple spots available in our Friday topics. Saturday and Sunday topics are full, but we are keeping an active waitlist for the weekend:

Smooth Moves Dog Training is excited to welcome Emily Klarman and Mary Ellen Barry for a summer mini-camp (in the A/C) at Forest City Dog Training Club on July 8-10!

We will split the ring in half, so there will be 6 unique topics with each instructor. There are topics across all training levels:

December 2021 with Smooth Moves

A couple last minute spots became available for our US Open preparation.

Saturday, October 9th Emily Klarman is offering a US Open prep in Menomonee Falls, WI. We will be setting up old US Open (and comparative) courses on a 130x130 field.

The goal for this seminar isn’t to teach the skills on how to get through the courses. The first run will be a mock run like a real competition and then we will discuss and try again after everyone gives it a try “for real”. The focus will be on mental and physical management to get though this event. We don’t often get the opportunity to work on wide open courses like this and it’s a great way to prepare for the Open.

This seminar will run from 9-5 with an hour break for lunch. Cost is $175. I will need help course building. We will fit in an agility, jumping, and games class minimally. We will be outdoors on grass *NOT* fenced in. Hopefully the weather in October will be cooperative but if it’s not we will rain check for Sunday, October 10th.

Here’s a video of one of Vanish’s runs from last time they had the Open. That bar cost us a win in this class. But still so much fun and such a great course.

Stay tuned as Smooth Moves has some very exciting stuff coming up this summer!!

Starting with monthly Friday night young/novice dog foundations! These foundation workshops will run from 6pm-9pm in Menomonee Falls, WI. Focus is on building a strong foundation for agility with new dogs and puppies. Appropriate for many ages. Cost is $75. The dates for these workshops are:

June 11th
July 2nd
August 6th

June 19-20 Emily is teaching a workshop in Waterford, WI. Saturday is young dog skills in the morning and young dog short sequences in the afternoon. Sunday morning will focus on tunnel skills (both verbals and handling) and the afternoon will be coursework. Cost is $80 per workshop or $150 all day.

Fall Private Lessons Available with Emily Klarman!

I bought some custom training courses from several FCI judges for my field and small building in Poplar Grove, IL. Next week I am setting up this Tamas Traj course! Obviously this is meant to be broken down but so many fun sections in here.

Private lessons are personalized to the desired level of skill of the participant - we can focus in on more than just coursework.

Rates for private lessons are:
$75 - 1 handler per hour
$100 - 2 handlers per hour
$120 - 3 handlers per hour

Bundle discount if 3 lessons are purchased at a time:
1 handler - $200
2 handlers - $260
3 handlers - $300

I would prefer to keep privates stacked on Thursdays and Fridays but I can be flexible.

There are a couple last minute spots available for the Emily Klarman workshop this Sunday (8/2) at Granny Rose.

The topic is a new one and it highlights what I’ve been working on with my dogs over the quarantine.

“Manual vs Automatic Handling”
Verbals are the new trend and although I see great value in them I feel it is equally as important to understand the foundation of handling that the dog’s read naturally.

This topic is very flexible as newer handlers can focus natural handling while more experienced teams will learn either a new skill or a reminder on how to alternate between “manual” (natural) handling and “automatic” (verbal) handling.

Ps those blind cross threadles are really hard when you’ve been using “in” the last year or two 😂

February 15-16, 2020
2/15 8:00-12:00 Short Sequences
Sequences roughly about 6 to 12 obstacles long. Appropriate for both young and experienced dogs. Dogs must be able to perform jumps and tunnels.

2/15 1:00-5:00 Slice vs. Wrap
Short sequences of 3-8 obstacles. Discussion will be on when it is best to choose a wrap or a slice on a jump. Since the answer will not be the same for all dogs sequences will be timed to determine which way is more efficient for your dog.

2/16 8:00-12:00 Games
Classes such as Gamblers and Snooker will be discussed in this workshop. Game plans and strategies will be analyzed as well as specific training for each class (ex. distance skills for gamblers)

2/16 1:00-5:00 Coursework
Working on international style course between 25-30 obstacles. Course will be broken down on halves and then put together at the end. Dogs must be efficient in all obstacles.

March 7-8, 2020
3/7 8:00-12:00 Short sequences
Sequences roughly about 6 to 12 obstacles long. Appropriate for both young and experienced dogs. Dogs must be able to perform jumps and tunnels.

3/7 1:00-5:00 Lead changes
This workshop break down the times that a dog must change leads (or change direction). Discussion will be on when to keep the dog on the same lead and when it is appropriate and efficient to change their lead. Sequences will be only jumps and tunnels - possibly one sequence with weaves.

3/8 8:00-12:00 Critical point
This workshop focuses on recognizing areas on a course that requires precision and prioritization. This workshop will be set up in a coursework format. Dog should know all obstacles and be training (not necessarily competing) at the masters level.

3/8 1:00-5:00 Coursework
Working on international style course between 25-30 obstacles. Course will be broken down on halves and then put together at the end. Dogs must be efficient in all obstacles.

May 23-24, 2020
5/23 8:00-12:00 Short sequences
Sequences roughly about 6 to 12 obstacles long. Appropriate for both young and experienced dogs. Dogs must be able to perform jumps and tunnels.

5/23 1:00-5:00 Tunnels
This workshop will focus on both training tunnel skills and tunnel traps. This workshop sure will be a FUN one!

5/24 8:00-12:00 Backsides
Short sequence training different type of backsides. We will both focus on training the dog's backside skills and also handler efficiency on handling different types of backsides.

5/24 1:00-5:00 Coursework
Working on international style course between 25-30 obstacles. Course will be broken down on halves and then put together at the end. Dogs must be efficient in all obstacles.

This is something I’m really excited to announce. Stacie Cwik and Emily Klarman are going to start a quarterly US Open prep to help people prepare for this year’s big event.

Our first prep will be on March 28th in Dixon, IL. This one will be the smallest of the four but I wanted to get one in to prepare for the Midwest Cup.

In this area we are so very lucky to have such amazing indoor facilities but we wanted to best replicate the US Open. During the summer and fall we are going to rent a fairground and really open the rings up. We feel it’s really important to practice on these big courses and also run on grass as that is one of the surfaces at the Open. We want to focus on not only handling and training but also strategies to on how to manage a big event.

The rest of the events will be held at the Rock County Fairgrounds in Janesville, WI. The date for these events will come out shortly. I’m waiting to hear back from the fairground but I’m hoping for May, August, and October. Since we are outside in the event of weather becomes a factor we will move the event to the next day (Sunday) of that weekend.

The cost is $175 per day and will run from 9am to 5pm with an hour break. Please send me a message if you’re interested in March! I will be accepting spots for the rest of the preps when dates are finalized.

January 2020 Workshops with Emily Klarman!

Saturday 1/18:
Short Sequences 8:00am-12:00pm
Only jumps and tunnels will be used with sequences roughly around 6-12 obstacles long. Good for both young and experienced dogs!
Step to it! 1:00pm-5:00pm
Handling mechanics will be broken down on techniques that require a “step to takeoff” such as front crosses, forward sends, reverse spins, and more!

Sunday 1/19:
Verbal skill training 8:00am-12:00pm
Single obstacle or short sequences will be used in this workshop. The verbals being worked on in this workshop will improve handler efficiency to get down a line quicker.
Coursework 1:00pm-5:00pm
Working on an international style course between 25-30 obstacles. Both halves will be broken up and then pieced together at the end.
