Most of the tomatoes I tried to save the other day didn't make it, but one might have.

Below are green peas I planted a couple weeks ago, and they seem pretty happy despite the cold.

Mid to late January is the time to plant peas in Louisiana.

Don't worry of your ground isn't prepped. Pea seeds only need to be covered and something to climb.

Plant seeds along your existing fence line for an early spring crop.

New year, New you,

New Garden.

If you want to plant organicly grown seedlings, you will need to find a local source or, plan to grow them yourself.

Planting time in the south is in March for most summer garden plants.

For seedling to be ready, they need to be planted indoors in mid January.
Check your local agricultural center's planting guide for more details.

With the weather cooling down, it is time to take out any plants that are finished, and give the ones that just keep going a bit of a boost. Add a little compost around each you are leaving in, and tuck your garden in with some mulch.

The storm could not have been kind to garden plants.
If any are pushed over, go ahead and stand them up gently and tamp down the roots.
You may need to stake them.

Give them a couple of weeks to see if they flourish or struggle. Plants are much more resilient than we might think.

Root crops do especially well in the fall/winter here in New Orleans.

Radishes especially, are easy and can grow in hard ground; they are also among the fastest growing vegetable: approximately 1 month to 6 weeks, seed to harvest.

Daikon radishes are used in Asian dishes and help loosen soil as they grow.

A cool spell is coming this week.

To protect your remaining warm weather plants, a quick greenhouse is easily made by draping visqueen over stands or a frame. It doesn't have to be fancy, you just want it on something that won't let it sit on the plants, and it needs to extend all the way to the ground.

A clear painters drop cloth works well for this.
