Now that you know how to remove a tick on your dog, here’s what you don’t want to do …

❌ DON’T … remove ticks with your fingers. If you must, use a tissue and disinfect your hands to remove tick saliva or blood. And don’t forget to clean the bite area on your dog.
❌ DON’T … squish or crush a tick. This can force infected body fluids into your dog.
❌ DON’T … worry if the mouthpart of the tick stays in your dog’s skin. It’s a bit like having a splinter and it will fall out in a few days.
❌ DON’T … use nail polish, vaseline or repellents to try to suffocate or kill the tick. This can cause the tick to vomit into your dog.
❌ DON’T … burn the tick with a lighted cigarette or match. These can also cause vomiting.
❌ DON’T … throw the live tick in your trashcan or sink. They can easily crawl back out.

You can save the tick in tape or a baggie if you want to have it tested for tick-borne diseases.

Never use the crate as punishment!

Never use the crate as punishment!

Crate training a puppy or dog should be easy. Essentially, puppies come pre-programmed with a love of crates. Their love of small, dark spaces should make any dog want a crate to call their own.

Here's how to show your puppy the crate is a safe and happy place:
✴️ Create a dark den by using an enclosed crate, or covering a wire crate with a blanket
✴️ Choose hard rubber toys and place them at the far end
✴️ Get some delicious snacks
✴️ Provide a hamster water dispenser, a hanging pail or a small bowl for water
✴️ Get 2 or 3 soft pads (1 or 2 in the wash, 1 in the crate) for bedding
✴️ Keep the crate wherever you are so she doesn't feel isolated

When you're crate training your puppy, you're trying to make her love her crate and call it home. That's why you want to avoid using it as punishment.

If your puppy gets too rambunctious or misbehaves, it might be tempting to use her crate as punishment. If you force your puppy into her crate or yell at her to get in, it will make the crate a scary place. Besides, it’s always best to tell puppy what you want her to do instead of punishing her for the wrong behaviors.

As she gets older, you can use the crate for time-outs. But only once your puppy starts to love her crate and can tolerate it for more than an hour.

Just remember why you want your puppy to love her crate:
✳️ Crates make housetraining a snap
✳️ Crates can reduce the risk of separation anxiety
✳️ Crates prevent destructive behavior
✳️ Crates make dogs safer for children
✳️ Crates are mobile hotel rooms
✳️ Crates make vet visits less stressful

Have you just adopted a new puppy or have a puppy that you could use a little help with?
Some people wonder when or if it's too early to get training when they first adopt a pup...

I recommend getting help as soon as you bring your new pup home!

That is why I'm offering puppy classes for dogs between 8 and 16 weeks old.
You will learn basic commands as well as leash train and obedience training.
This training will be a 4 session 4 week course for you and your pup.

Please message me for more details!

Looking forward to helping you and your pup live a happy life together! 💕 🐕
