Paws on Pause! ⚠️

We all love a brisk winter walk, but when it comes to our fur babies, knowing when to stay cozy indoors is key. While some breeds thrive in the chilliest conditions, others need a break from the biting winds and ice cold sidewalks. So, how cold is too cold for your dog to strut their stuff?

First, consider your pup’s breed, size, and age:

🩵Small dogs and those with short fur lose heat quickly and feel the cold more intensely than larger dogs with thick coats.

🩵Puppies and senior dogs have less developed or weaker immune systems, making them more susceptible to hypothermia and frostbite.

🩵Medical conditions like arthritis can also make dogs more sensitive to cold.

Next, check the temperature and weather:

🩵Below 20°F: This is generally the danger zone for most dogs, especially vulnerable ones. Think twice before heading out, and opt for indoor playtime instead.

🩵20°F to 32°F: Proceed with caution, especially for sensitive dogs. Keep walks short, bundle up your pup, and watch for signs of discomfort.

🩵Above 32°F: Most healthy dogs are comfortable in these temperatures, but still pay attention to individual needs and adjust accordingly.

Signs your pup is saying “Nope” to the cold:

🩵Shivering, whining, or reluctance to walk.

🩵Lifting paws or licking them excessively.

🩵Slowing down or appearing lethargic

🩵Pale gums or cold ears and tail.

Snoopy, our newest Happy Paws pup, finally got the paw-ty started on his outdoor adventures! Today, he sniffed his way through a world of exciting sights and smells.

As a puppy, every experience is new and can be a bit overwhelming. We encourage curiosity and take things one tail wag at a time, letting our furry friends explore at their own pace. Our goal is to help these little ones build confidence one sniff at a time, resulting in happy, healthy social lives!

Struggling with a shy pup? Here’s a Happy Paws tip: let them lead! Follow their curious noses on walks, praise their exploration, and celebrate every tiny adventure. Confidence built, one happy sniff at a time!

Did you know that the beautifully unique coat of a diluted tortie cat is actually a genetic quirk?

Here’s the fun fact:

Dilute torties are almost always female! This is because the genes responsible for their coat pattern are carried on the X chromosome. Females have two X chromosomes, while males only have one. If a male cat inherits the dilute gene on his one X chromosome, it will be masked by the non-dilute gene on the other X chromosome in a female. This means that male dilute torties are extremely rare, occurring in only about 1 in 3,000 births.

So, the next time you see a beautiful dilute tortie cat, remember that you’re not just looking at a stunning feline, you’re also witnessing a rare and fascinating quirk of genetics!

If you want to help Duchess find a forever home, please share. 🫶🏼

Duchess was adopted from ACPBR two years ago after over a year in foster care. Last week, she was returned. We are always hopeful that our dogs will be placed with furever families for the rest of their days but sometimes, life happens. We are so broken-hearted for Ducho but we’re keeping the faith that when one door closes, another opens.

She is a sweet senior that is the ultimate cuddle companion. She’s tolerant of other friendly dogs (and will occasionally play) and hasn’t ever met a stranger. She is not cat friendly and will need to lose some weight to get around easier. If you are able to open your home to her for the holidays or… better yet are interested in adopting, apply on our website 🐶

One of our own needs your help!

Sweet Hattie has been a part of our Happy Paws family for many years, and as with all of our furry friends, we love her as one of our own.

Hattie recently experienced an unfortunate accident that caused her to severely injure her hind leg. This condition is causing her a great deal of pain and discomfort, and it is also making it impossible for her to join us on her favorite outdoor activities.

To restore Hattie's mobility and alleviate her pain, she requires an expensive, yet essential surgery. The unexpected cost of this procedure poses a significant financial burden for Hattie's mom.

This is where the strength of our community shines brightest. We are asking our Happy Paws family and the pet loving community for your help by contributing to Hattie’s GoFundMe campaign, to help cover her significant surgery expenses. Any donation (seriously…ANY), no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated.

Situations like these serve as a reminder that life can throw unexpected curveballs, and none of us is immune to misfortune. In times such as these, the power of community is invaluable.

Thank you so much for your compassion and generosity.

Please Please Please…

🐾 Get your cats spayed / neutered

🐾 Don’t let them roam “the hood” if they are not fixed

🐾 Don’t leave them behind (assuming they will be fine) when you move

This applies to all pets, but we are currently dealing with a stray cat issue.

When females go in heat, intact male cats lose all sense of reason. The male cats will cluster around the female following her obsessively. She can’t eat, sleep, or move without constantly watching her back (literally).

The males get into multiple fights with each other, often causing painful injuries. They act erratically as they chase or run from each other, not paying attention to other neighborhood hazards (cars, predators). It’s incredibly tragic to see.

The cat in the next pic is one of the male cats that got into a fight with another male as they both stock the female to mate. If/when they are successful, the female cat that they are stocking will have kittens that will likely die from exposure, malnutrition, or other outdoor life hazards. Any that do survive will repeat this tragic pattern.

Female cats can begin getting pregnant at just 4 months old. They can have approximately 3 litters per year, averaging about 12 kittens per year! That’s a lot of unnecessary suffering.

Please help these babies by properly caring for the ones that you are responsible for and please consider helping the abandoned ones. 🐾♥️🐾
