Neighbors,
We are experiencing a crisis in shelters across our city, state, and country. Animals, specifically dogs, are not getting adopted like they were, and as more stray and owner surrenders come in, there simply aren't enough cages.
We ask for your help so often, so we have now compiled a list of resources so we can help you keep your pet. Keeping your pet is the #1 most important way you can help us solve this shelter crisis. Here are some resources:
1. If you are a Chicago resident and are in danger of having to give up your pet because you cannot afford veterinary care, email us at [email protected] for financial support
2. If you are in need of vaccines or spay/neuter please check the free or discounted clinic at PAWS Chicago, The Anti-Cruelty Society, Tree House Humane Society, SNIP Society, and SPAY ILLINOIS
3. If your pet is currently lost or you found a stray, please file a report with Lost Dogs Illinois. If your pet is in a shelter and you can't afford the reclaim fee, please contact Lost Dogs Illinois who can help you pay for it
4. If you need a tag for your pets collar and can't afford one email [email protected] and we will mail you one
5. If you need help affording a pet deposit to get new housing, check out the The Anti-Cruelty Society's program to help you pay for that: https://anticruelty.org/pet-deposit-subsidy-program
6. If you are struggling with your pet's behavior, call the Anti Cruelty Society's free behavior hotline: https://anticruelty.org/helpline
7. If you need help feeding your pet email [email protected] and we will help you find the pet food pantry closest to you.
8. If you absolutely must rehome your pet use the resource list posted in the comments so you can keep your pet until you find the right home.
If you know of any more owner assistance programs, please share them in the comments!
