Between 1981 and 1983, then West Germany experienced the largest mass demonstrations in its history. Millions protested against the deployment of American Pershing II medium-range nuclear missiles. In the German capital at that time, Bonn, 300,000 people took part in a peace demonstration on 10 October 1981 and half a million on 10 June 1982. There were also hundreds of other large demonstrations and sit-in blockades. On 22 October 1983, 1.3 million people took to the streets across Germany.

The stationing of land-based medium-range missiles in Germany, agreed by the German government at the Washington NATO summit, places the lives of millions at risk.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s fascist government putting the country on a war footing in pursuit of its policy of Jewish Supremacy over the whole of Israel/Palestine from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea comes with a heavy price tag.

Last week, the southern port of Eilat halted its operations, declared bankruptcy, after losing $13.61 million, and is to lay off half of its 120 workers. The port has been largely inactive since the start of the war as ships diverted around Africa to avoid the Red Sea route through the Suez Canal to reach Europe, following attacks by Yemen’s Houthi forces in support of the Palestinians in Gaza on shipping in the Red Sea with connections to Israel.

In a bellicose move aimed at ratcheting up tensions with China, Australia and the Philippines have conducted wide-ranging military exercises over the past week, including combined air and maritime drills, amphibious landings and a mock invasion of an island.

The exercises were openly framed as a response to US-stoked tensions between the Philippines and China over disputed waters in the South China Sea.

The existence of a massive torture program operated by the American military and intelligence agencies does not only implicate the individual torturers in war crimes. The fact that nobody has ever faced accountability or consequences incriminates all branches of government, the military, and both political parties, together with all the media, corporate, and academic institutions that have complacently reconciled themselves to this reality—in short, the entire US political establishment.

The fact that nobody has ever gone to prison for the CIA torture program implicates the entire US political establishment and exposes the hypocrisy of its claims to be defending human rights abroad.

The election of Kai Wegner as the new Mayor of Berlin last Thursday has exposed the character of the new state executive he now heads in the German capital. It was only in the third round of voting that the Christian Democrat (CDU) politician was elected by a simple majority, and presumably only with the votes of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).
Fascism is infiltrating many capital and major cities, worldwide. Fight to stop the spread of Neo-Nazism.

The election of the Christian Democrat Kai Wegner as Berlin Mayor, and thus the head of the state government, has revealed the character of the administration now running Germany’s capital. Wegner was most likely elected with the votes of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).

A report in the Wall Street Journal, published on the newspaper’s front page Monday morning, links important figures in the US business and political elite to financier and s*x trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, who died in a federal prison in Manhattan in 2019 under circumstances that strongly suggest he was murdered to keep him quiet.

The Journal reporters wrote that they had gained access to Epstein’s private diary and other documents, “which include thousands of pages of emails and schedules from 2013 to 2017, [that] haven’t been previously reported.” The diary listed meetings with dozens of individuals, though it supplied little information about the content or subject of the meetings. The bulk of these engagements were at Epstein’s palatial townhouse in Manhattan.

The financier and exploiter and procurer of teenage girls was found dead in his prison cell in August 2019, a death which remains unexplained by prison officials and the federal Department of Justice.

The International Youth and Students for Social Equality (IYSSE) held a meeting April 27 at Berlin’s Humboldt University on the topic: “The war in Ukraine and how to stop it.” It was the first meeting in Germany of an international series on the causes of the NATO proxy war in Ukraine, held by the youth and student movement of the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI).

The university chapter of the IYSSE distributed free FFP2 (N95) masks to the participants, set up air filters and took further protective measures to ensure the safety of all participants and speakers. IYSSE spokesman Gregor Kahl stressed at the beginning that the convening of a public meeting against the war in Ukraine was of great importance:

It was the first meeting in Germany of an international series on the causes of the NATO proxy war in Ukraine held by the youth and student movement of the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI).

On April 25, the International Youth and Students for Social Equality (IYSSE) at San Diego State University in California hosted a public lecture, “The war in Ukraine and how to stop it,” presented by David North, the International Editorial Board Chairman of the World Socialist Web Site.

The event was part of an international meeting series that has included events in Brazil, the UK, Canada, Sri Lanka, Germany, Australia and New Zealand, centered on explaining the historical background to the US-NATO war against Russia in Ukraine and elaborating a socialist and internationalist strategy to stop the war.

On April 25, the IYSSE at San Diego State University hosted a public lecture, “The war in Ukraine and how to stop it,” presented by WSWS International Editorial Board Chairman David North.

Thousands of writers took to the picket lines Tuesday and expressed a willingness to fight back against the few corporations that dominate not only film and television, but the rest of society as well.

On May Day, the international day of working class solidarity, French President Emmanuel Macron unleashed hordes of heavily armed riot police as millions protested the pension cuts he has imposed despite overwhelming popular opposition. Street medics treated 200 wounded protesters, including 30 seriously wounded, along with 2,000 cases of serious tear gas inhalation.

There is no room for compromise and nothing to negotiate with this government, and the way forward for the working class is to bring it down through a general strike.

Nineteen small boats in danger in the English Channel, carrying 440 migrants between them, were abandoned by the UK authorities on just four days in early November 2021, suggests evidence obtained by the Observer and Liberty Investigates.

Immediately following the period analysed by the Observer and Liberty Investigates, on November 24, at least 27 people are known to have drowned in the worst disaster in the Channel for 30 years.

This is a continuation of the US and Australian threats against the Solomon Islands in April, 2022. In that month, it was revealed that China and the Solomons had signed an economic and security agreement. The US, with the backing of Australia, threatened military intervention if this included Chinese military basing on the islands.

The defence review, calling for the biggest Australian military build-up since World War II, is based on “war gaming” that has been hidden from the population.

Thousands of nurses took strike action Monday impacting around half of England's hospitals, mental health and community services. The 28-hour strike which hit 125 National Health Service trusts began at 8pm Sunday ending midnight on Monday.

The walkout is the latest action in a series of stoppages held since last December by NHS workers to win an above inflation pay deal. The strike was the first time that nurses walked out in all sectors of the NHS, including intensive care units, cancer care and emergency departments. As is standard, the nurses’ union—the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) —put in place exemptions to the strike so nurses could leave picket lines to ensure the provision of life-preserving care.
