Why positive only training fails and balanced training has to pick up the pieces

“YIN YANG is a Chinese philosophical concept that describes how obviously opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world, and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another”

To train a dog is to train them how to react correctly to positive AND negative situations in life.

There is no dog trainer that will practice the same methods because there is no dog owner that will live the same life; but my best advice is to find someone who can put your dog into comfortable AND uncomfortable situations and give them the inside voice to make the right decision regardless of how they feel.

excitement, joy, stress, pressure, control, affection, arousal, pain, love, boredom and engagement; life’s lessons to teach us what to do and what not to do… without it any animal becomes their own detriment, but to learn to absorb it and master it leads to nothing but harmonious bliss

PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE
——————————————-
I personally can’t stand lack of patience in dogs. I see it as a massive sign of poor training leading to behaviours with lack of focus and disrespect.

Simba waiting for me to throw the ball for him. He’s a high drive dog with a nasty attitude in drive but he’s respectful and calm through an understanding of patience.

A very important part of control and one of the reasons I see so much redirection and handler conflict with high drive dogs during stimulation.

The main issue Lottie and Lucy came to me with was aggression….fighting over food. Putting holes in each other and their owner when she tried to separate them. Just a bad reaction to being over excited and out of control. The first week of their training was spent shutting down over stimulated behaviour in their day to day lives without it reaching any aggressive levels. Allowing them to learn about correction, praise, right and wrong…. It’s made dealing with the bigger stuff a very simple task ✅

ARCHIE 🧡 this handsome chap is in for residential training for random outbursts of aggression and nervous reactive behaviour.

His behaviour isn’t consistent which I LOVE because I get to spend time problem solving and finding triggers. His owners are extremely committed to him and have already put a lot of effort in with previous trainers and he has some wonderful foundation qualities to work with.

Simba helping out to see if this young dog is really that overly interested in dogs or if she is just looking for excitement and attention regardless of its source. Apparently Simba was so boring she decided to come back to me for the attention, this was his first time meeting this excitable young dog - Malinois and Dutch Herders are notorious for being high energy and reactive with very little impulse control …… it’s a long process to cap it which needs to be a way of life outside of work or sport. I highly recommend following the concept of methods used by gundog trainers to create “steadiness”

Tiger. This girl is the strongest case of fear reactive behaviour I’ve seen which has no reason for it other than to manipulate. Add in the extra genetic predisposition to bite and other breed traits and we have what I like to call a challenge - I can’t help but have a soft spot for her as I watch her growth through a constant battle of her habits vs her instincts. This is a special case, full of appreciation for the mental process a dog like this has to come through to get to where they need to be.

Muzzle work with Simba - As well as being a dog I use to fix issues with other dogs, Simba is a personal protection dog. He is fully trained to the level I require and we now train for maintenance and enjoyment. I got Simba when he was 14 weeks old and now at the age of 4 he is balanced and socially neutral enough to enjoy life with the ability to do his job when required.

Raven enjoying some one on one time with her favourite dog Simba - Being nervous of other dogs, she’s been pushed outside of her comfort zone all week in pack walks learning to make the uncomfortable into something comfortable - Her learning process requires a break in social pressure to allow that room for digestion and growth under the guidance of just one solid dog

Introducing Raven! This very sweet 8 month dutch shepherd is with me for boarding. She has some nervous and over excitable behaviour particularly around other dogs so she’s going to be spending some quality time with me getting the right kind of socialising and guidance while she’s on her holidays
—————————————————-
As Malinois and Dutch Shepherds become more popular in the pet world, I’m finding and increasing number of them not being comfortable in their own skin without some kind of distractive engagement or self rewarding unwanted behaviour. These dogs have an abundance of drive which requires a lot more work to cap and create stability in their heads.

Arlo is a 9 month old bulldog with a self rewarding desire to ignore his owners and entertain himself with other dogs. Dogs that are too interested in other dogs usually lead to major problems when they get older. Arlo is being flooded with balanced dogs here and learning to be neutral and handler focused.

Great to have Leo and Lexi the german shepherds back. It’s been almost 2 months since these two first came to me for residential training to fix some pretty bad dog reactive behaviour, lack of confidence, no off lead control and constant lead pulling. It’s clear their owners have really put in the effort as they have both returned for a short holiday with no decline in their behaviour. They are still as happy, well behaved and obedient as the day I handed them back retrained

This weeks walks include rain, a bitch in season and two entire males! This is where the behaviour management on walks comes in really handy ☔️
