Maybe I’m just a little spicy lately, but I have to say it: if you don’t have time to let your dog sniff, don’t walk your dog 😤

I see so many people pulling their dogs mid sniff or even mid p*e to hurry them along. Look, I get it, we’re all busy, tired, stressed, and that’s only the tip of the iceberg, BUT your dog experiences the world primarily through their sense of smell. If you’re not letting your dog sniff, you’re depriving them of experiencing the world in the way that makes the most sense to them.

While walks provide some physical benefit, the most beneficial piece to them is the mental enrichment of taking in all those scents! And no, allowing your dog to sniff or engage in otherwise species typical behaviors will NOT lead to problem behaviors or “dominance.” Actually, it will probably do the opposite. 🤷🏻‍♀️

So if you’re on a time crunch:
• Try to walk a shorter duration or distance with more sniffs
• Or don’t walk your dog and instead do something else like play, train them, or do a food enrichment activity like a snuffle mat or puzzle

I was scrolling through social media this morning and happened upon an ad for an indestructible style crate where their call to action was, “crate your dog’s anxiety.” 😡

I want to be really clear: if your dog is suffering from separation anxiety, a crate may prevent destruction of your home or injury to your dog, but it DOES NOT solve anxiety.

Separation anxiety is best treated with a conjunction of sub-threshold training under the supervision of a dog training or behavior professional with certification in separation anxiety such as a Certified Separation Anxiety Trainer (CSAT) and a medical management plan under the supervision of a Veterinary Behaviorist.

I’m not saying that crates are bad and shouldn’t be used, but consume dog training advice discerningly. Don’t let clever marketing schemes get you… The dog industry is full of quick fixes to stop behavior we find undesirable that appeals to us. Unfortunately these solutions usually come at the cost of our dogs’ mental wellbeing which results in unintended long term consequences.

If you are unsure, reach out to a dog training professional, but remember that the dog training field is entirely unregulated. So look for someone who is certified, has experience, and adheres to the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s humane training position statement that can be found here:https://avsab.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/AVSAB-Humane-Dog-Training-Position-Statement-2021.pdf

My sweet girl would have been 14 today… I miss her beyond belief. For the first time since her death, I felt the desire to finish her story that I started to share right before she passed.

There is a warning before the heavy bit about loss and grief comes, so if you don’t have the space you can bow out before it. It might have typos, I wrote it through eyes blurred with tears. And as hard as it was, in a way, it’s healing to share. I hope that if you’re struggling with grief of any form, my words find you and help you know that you’re not alone.

Every year on Halloween, I set up a candy basket with a sign for the trick or treaters to prevent people from approaching & knocking on my door or ringing the doorbell. This is the easiest and most peaceful strategy for my reactive dog.

If you want to do the same and need a sign for the trick or treaters, you can use this one I made for free: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IwkRjgNCf8pzt0qhRMQIkhgn6ADRxjtZ/view?usp=drive_link

I’m so tired of hearing this narrative about small dogs…

Small is a descriptor of size, NOT species. That’s not to say there aren’t considerations we can take into account or skills we can teach to make adapting to a large world easier for them.

I will die on this hill, and honestly I’m okay with that. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just a reminder that you can choose to be anything you want in your relationship with your dog. I hope you choose to be a place of comfort, safety, and stability.

Navigating the world with your dog can be challenging with so much advice out there about what your dog should be and how they should behave. If you lead with that choice and a little bit of empathy, finding your way becomes a little easier.

The level to which a dog’s reactive behavior can be resolved depends on a number of things…

✅ Your Definition of Resolved - The definition of reactivity being resolved varies greatly. What is considered “resolved” for one household may not be the same for another and that’s okay!

✅ Your Dog’s L.E.G.S - Your dog’s individual learning history, environment, genetics, and sense of self all play factors in the expression of your dog’s behavior. The source of reactivity can be complex and can include genetic inheritance, stress in utero, trauma, socialization, and so much more. The fact is that we just don’t have control over all the factors, so the level to which your dog’s behavior can be modified depends on your dog.

✅ Access to Resources - Access to resources such as time, money, qualified trainers or behavior consultants, veterinary care, veterinary behaviorist and so much more play a factor in the level of behavior change you are able to achieve. We all do the best with what we have to available to us and that’s okay!

*This list is not meant to be exhaustive. If there is something else I might not have added, comment it below!

The bottom line is this: having a dog struggling with reactive behavior does NOT mean you’re lazy! If someone says otherwise, know that it is a vast oversimplification of behavior modification.

👤 How do I measure success for my reactivity journey with my dog?

There are so many measures of success, but so often people get stuck on threshold distance (the distance from which your dog can be from a trigger without reacting with behaviors we label as reactive such as barking, lunging, etc.).

Here are some others to consider:
• Reduction in overall stress levels
• Less frequent reactions
• Less severe reactions
• Improved recovery time
• Guardian ability (yes this is a measure of success in my book, because your ability is integral to your dog’s success)

💬 Comment below: what success have you noticed with your reactive dog?

Have you ever been told your dog is dominant?

🙋🏻‍♀️ I have… and the advise I received was confusing and quite frankly, damaging to my relationship with my dog.

Here’s the thing, dominance IS NOT what you think it is. I personally find the term mostly unhelpful and causes more harm than good.

If a dog trainer, certified or not, tells you that you need to be dominant OR establish yourself as the pack leader or alpha, RUN. 🏃🏽‍♀️

A small dog guardian, I encounter people who want to socialize with my dog quite frequently.

As the parent of a reactive dog I have gotten very skilled at avoiding people, but I have encountered so many well-meaning people who have:
• Slowed down their car and shouted out the window that my dog is cute as they passed
• Pulled over their car, rolled down their window, and tried to talk to my dog
• Chased me with their dog so our dogs could meet
• Cornered me insisting our dogs would work it out
• Came out of their house and immediately picked up my dog without asking (yes, this happened!)

And the list goes on… and while those sound extreme, this happens so frequently to me and my small dog I’ve lost count.

Dogs and their people usually are not outside with the goal of socializing. And while you may mean well, you could be causing undue stress to the person and/or dog.

So let’s normalize ignoring dogs in public. If you must, smile, nod, or give a small wave just as you would passing a neighbor then move on.

By being able to recognize where your dog falls in regards to their threshold of reactivity, you can *be more proactive* in situations in where your dog might be approaching threshold and in doing so *prevent reactions* from occurring which will allow you to be a *better advocate*, *train effectively,* and *achieve results* more quickly all while reducing stress.

There’s three main zones I generally split this up into for my clients:

UNDER THRESHOLD
When your dog is under threshold, they are able to think and process so that they can learn things we desire such as triggers = treats. Signs include easy engagement, takes food gently, responsive, calm, loose body, loose lead (if trained), and lots of sniffing.

APPROACHING THRESHOLD
When your dog is approaching threshold, it’s time for you to increase distance or get out of there! Signs include stiff body, takes food roughly, piloerection, scanning, getting stuck, and difficulty responding.

OVER THRESHOLD
When your dog is at or over threshold, they are likely fight, flight, or freeze. Many people dogs don’t learn over threshold, but the truth is they learn extremely well over threshold (trigger = scary!) but that learning is often not the learning we desire. Signs include barking, lunging, pulling toward/away, redirection, laying down, and being unresponsive to known cues.

Are you able to recognize when your dog is in each of these zones? Comment below.

Client Spotlight: Hazelnut ✨

Team Hazelnut started working with me initially to work on some cooperative ear care given Hazelnut is prone to ear infections, but they have knocked out some seriously impressive goals such as:
- Low stress ear cleaning
- Rear nails on a scratchboard
- Muzzle training
- Multiple trick titles
- and more!

More recently, we began to work on Hazelnut’s reactivity to dogs and people. Hazelnut’s mom recently shared this latest success with me and I just had to celebrate their progress:
“Wanted to share a little win we had this week - Hazelnut was able to calmly walk with me up the driveway even though the neighbors were getting a delivery AND another neighbor was push mowing his lawn! Two separate distractions that would have a year ago made her have a full reaction, and this week she looked at each of them for a moment, turned back to me for a snack, and walked to the door! 🤯”

So beyond proud of this team and their dedication to Hazelnut!

Words can’t explain how I much I will always love you, my sweet Gracie girl. You have altered the course of my life and you have saved me more times than I can count and it’s my turn to save you the only way I can.

I’m forever grateful that chemo gave us another quality year together. Even though it hurts in an unimaginable way, I would do it all again for you. I feel so incredibly blessed to be yours and you mine. I promise to not let the shadow of your absence to be cast over the light you shined into my life.

I keep reading a lot of statements talking about a dog being or having 100% reliability in certain context or behavior - usually in relation to being off leash. I’m sure I’ll take some backlash for saying this, but when you’re talking about another being’s actions, there is no such thing as 100% reliability. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Does that mean I think dogs shouldn’t be let off leash ever? Absolutely not, but I do I think it should always a informed & calculated risk you take.

Here are some things I consider before letting my dogs off leash:
• The environment & its surroundings - Is being off leash allowed? Is there traffic? Are there people? Are there dogs?
• Your dog’s state in that environment and at that particular moment - Just like people, dogs can have bad days. This can change from moment to moment. If I feel my dog is off, I listen to my gut and err on the side of caution.
• Available reinforcers - Do you have really high value reinforcers on you that have been tested to ensure they still are high value recently with your dog?
• Training history - Have I trained in this environment before with a similar level of distractions? I often even warm up off leash time with a couple of recall tests.
• Plan if it all goes to 💩 - What are the consequences if things go to 💩 and something totally unexpected happens? What plan do you have in those situations? Are you prepared to accept those consequences?

Client Spotlight: Claudette ✨

Team Claudette has been working towards several goals, one of them being an improved relationship with her other person. Prior to our work together, Claudette would often steer clear of interactions with and even growl at him. Since working on their relationship, he and Claudette have gained so much confidence on how to communicate and listen to one another. Now Claudette is choosing to cuddle with him even when her mom is around, which is a BIG deal! Check out the second and third slide to see them enjoying a walk and cuddles.

With the help of a vet behaviorist, we were able to get Claudette on a medication that helps ease her day to day anxiety and in doing so her quality of life has improved greatly. She is now able to more easily relax during the day and night and is working on the ability to hang out during zoom calls and when her mom gets in a workout.

I’m so incredibly proud of team Claudette for all the hard work they’ve put in and for sticking with it even when it wasn’t easy. Claudette’s mom is so extraordinarily dedicated and it shows through and through. So so proud of the three of you.

I’ve been waiting my whole week off to share this! I’m so excited and proud to say that I am an Accredited Dog Trainer through the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC).

The application process for this accreditation is comprehensive and includes three letters of reference, written completion of questions regarding terminology, techniques, assessment, and history taking, and written discussion of scenarios and training questions. In order to pass you must score at least 80% on each section to pass. I passed with 98% overall! If you want to learn more about the accreditation process you can do so here: https://iaabc.org/en/accredited-credentials

While I have already been knowledge and skills assessed through Victoria Stilwell Academy for Dog Trainers and hold a VSA-CDT (online) certification, becoming a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant through the IAABC is one of my long term goals so this is a step closer on that path for me.

A big thank you for the support and encouragement I received from my clients, colleagues, friends, and family.

For me, trick training is less about the “trick” and more about the connection I form with my dog during the process.

All the trick training we do has resulted in dogs that are resilient, eager to try anything, unafraid of failing or guessing wrong, and confident beyond belief. Not only that, but our trust is unshakeable because the foundation of our relationship is built on kindness, encouragement, and nurture. Removing the pressure from training is something I try to carry forth in all training I do with my own dogs and with my clients. Any training process should be enjoyable for both parties. If it’s not, I take a step back and either adjust, put it in the parking lot after I’ve had time to think of way to make it more fun, or adjust my plan.

Do you do trick training with your dog? How has it impacted your relationship? Comment below. 💬

Team Benny have been frequent fliers of my group classes and recently completed Don’t Sweat the Small Dog class where they tackled Benny’s harness feelings. Now instead of running and hiding when the harness comes out, Benny runs to do paws up to get his harness put on.

The biggest of shout outs to Benny’s awesome guardians for all the work they put in to having a happy harness experience.

Client Spotlight: Oso ✨

Team Oso came to me wanting some help in feeling empowered to know how to help Oso when he was feeling overwhelmed and scared. Oso used to struggle on walks and would often spook to things like tall trees or novel objects such as boxes. He often struggled with barking, lunging reactions to other dogs, with large dogs being a particularly difficult trigger for him.

Since working together, not only has Oso been having fewer reactions, but he has gained so much confidence! While he used to cower and rush past tall trees on his regular walking route, he has began to sniff and investigate them on his own. Oso’s guardian has learned how to better identify when Oso is feeling uncomfortable and be proactive to help him through it with fun management games and skills. Now when Oso spots a larger dog, he calmly looks right back at his person instead of having a reaction. In addition to this, Oso is now empowered to let his guardian know when he feels uncomfortable and has started to choose flight on his own. There have been instances where he has actively decided turn around and head home and his amazing guardian respects his choice.

So incredibly proud of this team and all they have accomplished!

It’s so easy to be hypercritical of ourselves when it comes to having a behaviorally complex dog. It’s easy to self-blame that we’re not doing enough, that we could have responded better, that we should done x, y, or z instead, that we are at fault. While there may be a kernel of truth to some of those intrusive thoughts, at the end of the day we are doing our best. Today I just wanted to remind you that your best is more than good enough (especially to your dog)!

What’s something you’ve been hypercritical of lately and how can you flip that to be kinder to yourself? Comment below.
