Recently I got a close-up look at a friend’s small animal cage made by Prevue Pets; it is a great option for housing DWARF rats! Here are the features I liked about it: sturdy construction, large access doors, wires run both vertically and horizontally (for more attachment options than just one or the other), low ceiling (less fall risk than taller cages), and easy (dis)assembly for cage cleanings. The ramp may not last long if you have a chewer, but most rats would rather climb the wires anyways!
I am trying out a new exercise saucer from Oxbow. The base doubles as a hide house! And the stem looks sturdier than the Ware saucers I have (which are sadly wearing out).

Look at this “split” face!
“Laffy Taffy” and “Lollipop” are satin coat sisters that illustrate some of the challenges of developing a Fawn line. With these does, the RED gene (“red-eye-dilute”) that creates Fawn has combined with other recessive genes to create blue-beige and cinnamon-fawn respectively. It was difficult to ID them as babies because the eye and coat colors didn’t deepen into their final hues until 3-6 months.
Meet “London Fog.” I am so thankful to finally have a dwarf buck that is Russian Blue! A dwarf doe may only have two small litters in her lifetime, making it all too easy to lose her traits in the next generation. Having a buck guarantees a larger number of offspring that can have or carry this beautiful coat color.

Said goodby to Whimsy this week, just a month short of her third birthday. She was my original dwarf doe and always looked and felt like a soft, whispy cloud.
This playpen for dwarf rats can be made of foamboard and duct tape. Be sure to leave a gap when taping panels together so it can be folded flat when stored.

This month a breeder in Ohio was awarded the peer-nominated 2nd annual “Rat Breeder of the Year” award. Way to go!
Wheatgrass is a great way to add enrichment to your rat play area! (And good for them too!) Some pet stores sell seeds or ready-grown; I have also found it in my grocery store live herb section.

Prejudice can be a sneaky thing. Sometimes we don’t even realize we’re guilty of it until … well, until someone asks us if we want to see a rat.
Our first dwarf, “Waddles,” is 3 years old! His Rex coat is patchy with age, and his bright orange “silverfawn” head has faded. But he snuggles just as well as ever. :)
Visited a new pet store recently and was impressed by the variety of animals available and the store’s efforts to maintain high standards for quarantining new stock and educating customers about best practices for healthy pet ownership.
I just moved to Wisconsin and unfortunately am not in a housing location where I can continue with adoptions to the public. 😞. I still love to answer questions and correspond with past adopters though!
Two Rattery Updates...
1. I will not have standard rats available in the foreseeable future. (This is due to an upcoming job transfer that will limit time and space available. Also, my spring litters finally achieved a goal of getting the last two genes I want to work with into my dwarf lines!)
2. There has been some buzz in the rat community about ratteries discovering that some of their stock test positive for the bacteria which can cause "rat bite fever” in individuals with lowered immune systems. While I have tested and do take precautions against other illnesses, this is one I was not aware could be asymptomatic and so have sent off a lab screening sample. If you have adopted from me in the past and would like to know when the results come back, please message me.
As with most pets, there are illnesses present in the wild population that we try to keep out of the domestic population. But just like turtle owners should take precautions against salmonella, or cat owners should take precautions against the possibility of toxoplasmosis, rodent owners (including those with hamsters and guinea pigs) have "best practice" recommendations for cage-cleaning time. Pets provide many benefits to humans. They comfort us and they give us companionship. However, some animals can also pass diseases to people. These diseases are called zoonoses.
