The Easter tour was so much fun!!! Thank you to everyone who came to support the animals and celebrate with us.

The kids helped us dye eggs from our chickens using natural colors so we could then feed them back to the birds. They could choose from blueberry, raspberry, beet and turmeric dye.

And of course, no tour would be complete without lots of tongue and slobber from Teddy the cow. 😍

Rest in Peace Eydis. đŸ©·đŸ’”

Eydis was truly the black sheep of the family. Although she wasn’t at our Sanctuary for long, she really enjoyed roaming the pastures and grazing. She had recently lost her sister before her arrival and it took time for her to make new friends. With arthritis issues and being 13 years old, she sure was sassy. She would push the other sheep around until they eventually all learned to trust each other. Then they were never separated. We are so grateful we got to spend the last few months of her life together. We spoiled her so that she could enjoy her golden years. She was such a beautiful girl even though her hair was always a mess with hay!

A special thank you to Northside Animal Clinic. We were SO desperate for a vet who would euthanize her on a weekend and they really stepped up to show Eydis compassion.

We know there has been several deaths recently and it’s been emotionally draining for us. We wanted our sanctuary to specialize in senior animals and knew that many of them were reaching their time. But senior animals deserve just as much love as young animals. They want attention too.

We have spent a TON of money on euthanasia services this year. If you would like to donate towards these costs we would really appreciate it. You can also support by getting tickets to our Easter tour on Saturday. 100% of funds goes to the animals.

Rest in peace baby girl!

Come dye eggs for the birds!

Did you know that we feed back eggs to our chickens to help keep them healthy? It is one of their favorite treats. Come dye some eggs with natural dyes that we can then feed them. Who doesn't want to eat a pretty egg? The pigs will want some too.

Join us for our Easter tour on April 12th. This tour will include an easter egg hunt for the kids.

NOVA AND KEVIN

As spring arrives, many people buy chicks and ducklings from farm stores, but these adorable creatures come with big responsibilities. They need space, proper care, and a safe, long-term home. Unfortunately, many are abandoned when people realize they can’t meet their needs. 😞

Pictured below is Nova and Kevin—who arrived at the Ritzy Rescue Ranch a couple of years ago—are a direct result of people not being able to appropriately care for their animals. They were abandoned just like many others, but now they’re thriving here at the sanctuary

If you’re thinking about getting a chick or duckling, please make sure you're fully prepared for the long-term responsibility. Do your research and remember—bringing home a pet is a lifelong commitment. 💚

CLIMATE NEWS - Glacier Meltdown

A new study has found that glaciers are melting at an increased rate over the last decade, with worrying implications for polar ecosystems and the rest of the planet. While these glaciers have been melting for decades now, the rate at which they are doing so is only increasing. From 2000 to 2011, ice was lost at a rate of 255 billion tons a year, but in 2023 hit a record of 604 billion tons, more than double the previous rate.

This acceleration of melting is troubling for many reasons, but in large part due to the fact that the melting of glaciers contributes to rising sea levels more than any other form of ice on Earth. It is also important to note that the melting of glaciers represents a symbol of overall warming that can be devastating to these ecosystems. The plant and animal life that reside around these glaciers could be in trouble as the temperatures rise past the thresholds that support them.

It is also worrying that of all the regions studied, Alaska is losing glaciers the fastest. This pristine and vast wilderness supports so much biodiversity, which is all being threatened by these rising temperatures. This warming is something we humans are directly responsible for, and the reduction of these glaciers should serve as a wake up call that change is necessary if we want to protect the precious biodiversity of our planet.

Fun Fact! Horses are incredibly social animals that can form lifelong bonds with other horses – and humans!

They communicate through body language and even have a unique way of recognizing their favorite people, responding to specific voices or movements.

At Ritzy Rescue Ranch, we’ve seen firsthand how a strong relationship with a horse can help them heal emotionally and physically.

Grow your own produce!

As spring is quickly approaching, this will be the perfect time of year to start your own garden. The benefits are many, as you can grow organic foods for yourself (often for cheaper than at the store), it gives you a way to feel closer to nature, and provides you with a fun hobby! Of course, it is much easier to do this if you have a yard, but you can even do this indoors on a smaller scale. It is important to consider what types of vegetation your local environment can best support, as this varies by the climate of your region and the time of year.

If this is a realistic option for you, give it a try! So many emissions are created by commercial agricultural practices, from the growing itself to the transportation, not to mention the dangers of fertilizer runoff. By growing your own food instead and cutting out large scale agriculture, you are doing your part to reduce emissions and supporting your own health.

Climate news: Coral Reefs in Danger

Rising ocean temperatures are causing massive die-offs in the coral reefs around the world, including the Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef in the world, located on the northeast coast of Australia.

Rising global temperatures, both in the atmosphere and the oceans, have led to a process known as bleaching, where the increase in temperature causes corals to lose their algae, and turning the colorful creatures into white husks. Should temperatures remain high, the corals will perish, condemning the countless marine species that rely on this ecosystem for survival, and threatening the tourism industry that supports a large portion of the economy in many of the affected countries. In one of these countries, Vietnam, only 1% of the reefs remain fully healthy.

The destruction of these coral reefs is not only worrying for the fact that it is causing massive declines in the biodiversity of the ocean, but also because of its implications for the planet as a whole. It indicates that climate change is still increasing, and already causing severe damage to our environment. Many people around the world rely on these reefs for their livelihood, which will continue to be disrupted by these ecological changes, as for the many animal species that live in it. Even for those of us who may not be directly impacted, the decline of these reefs is a stark reminder that climate change is an existential threat to life everywhere on Earth.

While there isn’t much one person can do to lower the rising ocean temperatures, one important thing to consider is that sunscreen can also be very damaging to these coral reefs, so if you are ever lucky enough to swim in these beautiful ecosystems, be sure to use only reef friendly sunscreen! This means that it only contains mineral ingredients to block UV instead of harmful chemicals.

WEEKLY SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGE - Say No to Palm Oil!

On your next trip to the grocery store, try to avoid this environmentally impactful ingredient! This type of vegetable oil can be found in a variety of products, from soap to ice cream, and is present in over half of packaged US products. The reason palm oil is used so heavily is due to its low cost of production and high demand worldwide, which is causing serious environmental damages because of the way it is grown.

Palm oil plantations are all located near the tropics, mostly concentrated on islands of Indonesia and Malaysia, which happen to have some of the most biodiverse forests on the planet. This is where the issue arises, as the creation of palm oil plantations results in mass deforestation to make room for the monocrop. The environmental impact of this is damaging in two ways: for the fragmentation and degradation of wildlife habitats, and for the increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide caused by the removal of trees. Animals like tigers and orangutans are being increasingly threatened by the destruction of their native forests, and the ability of trees to convert carbon dioxide to oxygen means that their removal results in more CO2 remaining in the atmosphere, worsening the effects of climate change.

You can do your part in reducing the demand for palm oil by either buying products that use alternatives, like other vegetable oils, or by looking for labels such as the RSPO label, which certifies the palm oil was produced in a sustainable way.

Grieving..

2025 has been a rough year as our senior animals are getting older and starting to pass. It’s emotionally draining but it’s been so eye opening to see how other animals process death.

Animals understand death. They grieve, they cry out, they panic. It’s important that when an animal passes that their herd members get to spend time with the body. This allows the animals to process what is happening. It allows them to understand why their friend/lover is gone and that they didn’t just disappear. It allows us as humans, to grieve with them. It helps the animals know that we didn’t take their friend away. Allowing this time is critically important to their mental wellbeing.

When we finally took Maggie’s body away, Teddy (our cow) chased the truck down the road. Teddy ran around our fence line as far and as fast as he could. Maggie was his friend too. The other horses have been sad today. There is no pep in their step, there is no neighing in excitement for grain. We are all processing her passing.

Even our chickens grieve when their friends pass. While we understand that this is life, it still hurts. Our animals are hurting but we are all supporting each other during this healing process.

Rest in peace Maggie. You are so loved. 💔

Growing up, I always dreamed of having my own black beauty and you made my dreams come true. You walked me down the aisle when I got married, you helped my baby learn to trust horses as you always had a gentle touch, and you helped me through my own insecurities. Some days you knew me better than I knew myself.

You were our first Mare and were so patient as we learned how to care for horses. You helped Chrome as he struggled to settle into the Sanctuary and he loved you more than anything. You always knew how to play hard to get and he did everything to get your attention (horse love is the cutest).

I remember the day we picked you up, you were recovering from almost dying of starvation and had just been diagnosed with cushings disease. Despite the severe abuse, you never stopped loving, you never stopped trusting and you never stopped fighting. We gave you the best care and vet care possible. We even went back to get your “sister” who had been through the same things with you. Once reunited, you never left each other’s side. Lady loved you.

Even as you were dying, you fought. You never stopped fighting. This has changed me. You will always be a constant reminder to not give up. To always be kind and trusting. To try and stand up, even when you cannot. We are so blessed that you came into our lives, even though it wasn’t long enough. You had quite the "glow up".

We love you Maggie. Thank you for loving us too.

If anyone would like to donate in Maggie's honor or towards her euthanisa cost here is how:

Sustainability challenge - Try Carpooling!

As the largest source of air pollution in the Salt Lake Valley and one of the largest worldwide, emissions from vehicles can be detrimental to human health. There are multiple ways to help curb these emissions, such as walking or riding a bike if you are going somewhere close, using public transportation, or even more easily, by carpooling! This is especially effective for going to work; if a coworker lives close to your commute, you can halve the emissions from the drive to work by doing it together instead of taking multiple cars!

Another great time to do this is during the ski season, when countless people are driving up the canyons and the inversion is in full force, making air pollution an even bigger issue. Carpooling to the ski resorts not only lessens vehicular emissions during the winter season, but it also helps to alleviate the traffic, allowing you more time to shred powder instead of sitting in a car. You can do this with friends or family that also like to ski, or even connect with other strangers that go to the same ski stations as you, which is made even easier by carpooling apps like Rideski. It doesn’t require a lot of effort but can have tremendous impacts on our air quality
