DID YOU KNOW..
💉Goat Vaccinations💉
From the age of 6-12 weeks it is recommended to start vaccinating your goats. Or if they’re a little older, it’s never too late to start!
Goats are vaccinated with a vaccine that is used for sheep and goats to protect both species against 6 diseases including: Cheesy Gland (CLA) and the five main clostridial diseases (Black Disease, Black Leg, Malignant Oedema, Pulpy Kidney, and Tetanus).
When vaccinating for the first time, goats are required 2 doses initially, the first done at 6-12 weeks (or whenever you decide to start!) then a booster is to be given 4 weeks later.
After that, goats are to be given a booster every 6 months.
What to expect:
Vaccines are administered with a “vaccinator” which delivers 1ml of vaccination from the bottle to each goat.
After a small patch of skin on the neck is cleaned (usually with methylated spirits) the needle is inserted subcutaneously under the skin and the vaccine is administered. Easy as that!
On the odd occasions, some goats may experience swelling at the injection site, or even may develop an abscess, which is prevented by the cleaning of the skin before and after vaccine, and the use of a new sterile needle.
