It’s cheaper to maintain a cow in good body condition than it is to play catch up later. Cows with an ideal Body Condition Score (BCS) of 3.0 will rebreed sooner, have fewer calving difficulties, give birth to healthier and more productive calves, and produce better colostrum. Winter hair coats can sometimes mask a cow’s true condition, so it’s important to get a hands-on assessment of their fat cover. Learn how to perform a BCS and use our Body Condition Score Feed Cost Calculator to demonstrate the general cost of increasing condition: https://www.beefresearch.ca/research/body-condition-scoring.cfm

Winter feed is one of the largest expenses of a cow-calf operation and may account for over 40% of the variable cost of production. Minimizing the winter feed bill is important, but if cows aren’t in adequate body condition (BCS = 5) at calving, postpartum interval will be longer and pregnancy rates will likely be reduced. A good way to optimize the performance of the cow herd while minimizing the winter feed costs is to sort the cow herd into groups based on nutritional requirements. First-calf heifers have the greatest nutrient requirements (Figure 1) and should be managed separate from the rest of the cow herd. Also, thin cows that need to regain condition should be separated from average cows and given an energy supplement to achieve BCS 5 by calving.

When administering medications and vaccines, the body site where the product is given is important. Injecting pharmaceutical products in the correct location ensures that they will work correctly, prevents harm to the animal and improves the beef consumer experience. According to Beef Quality Assurance guidelines, drugs for intramuscular (IM) or subcutaneous (SC) administration should be given in the green and blue triangles highlighted above, unless the product label states otherwise.

Thankful for awesome clients!

We live in one of the nine states where cows outnumber people, and most of the time, we're quite happy about that fact. Tonight though, The Rancher & I are giving thanks for the amazing people who not only call our area home but come to help when we're in need. After friends and family pitched in to cover the ranch today, we were home long enough to finish night chores and get our kids to bed before needing help again. Thanks to Dr. Mike for rushing out, the heifer's uterine prolapse has been fixed, prayers have been said, and we're almost ready to call it a day. Yes, it's beef month, but good people are at the heart of great beef!

Ag Fact Friday:

Feeding cows in the evening, instead of in the morning, will cause the majority of calves to be born during daylight hours. Not everybody does it, but it works.

Research done at Kansas State University over a five year period, involving 537 births, documented 85.4% of calves born between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., when cows were fed in the evening (between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.).

Many studies have been done over the years, with similar results. Nobody knows why it works, only that it does.

Why do we care when calves are born? We care because difficult births are more likely to be detected, and assistance provided, during daylight hours.
