Elwood Sanctuary A sanctuary for native birds in Hillier SA.
(1)

Fauna Rescue of SA (08 8289 0896) affiliated and government licensed rescue and care for our beautiful native ducks and birds - helping them leave their best lives and getting them back into the wild!

26/05/2026

We are officially full.

Right now, we have a number of beautiful ducks of different breeds looking for their forever homes. Every single one of them has come from a place of abandonment, neglect or abuse… and every single one has been given the care, time and love needed to become healthy, happy little characters again.

Now we need the next step for them — safe, loving homes where they will be valued and cared for properly.

📍 Located in Hillier
🚗 Can assist with delivery for the right family
💲 Small rehoming fee applies

Please understand — we will ask questions. This isn’t about being difficult, it’s about making sure these ducks never end up in the wrong situation again. We’ve invested a lot into their recovery, and their future matters.

If you think you can offer a genuine forever home, reach out.

This little one came in after being attacked by a group of noisy miners — a young Magpie who didn’t stand much of a chance on his own.

He’s now had a full health check and is on pain relief and medication for his injuries. For the next little while, he’ll need some special food and extra care until he’s strong enough to get back to eating properly again.

And as you’ll see… recovery is being very closely supervised by Max the Golden Retriever 😂
(He’s taking his role quite seriously.)

Every rescue like this takes time, resources, and a whole lot of patience — but seeing them get a second chance makes it all worth it.

We’ll keep you posted on his progress 💛

Today we got a call from Police Officer Ashton.

There had been a fire in Gawler, and in the middle of it all, he’d rescued a pigeon from the smoke.

We didn’t hesitate. We headed straight down, collected this little survivor, and brought them back into care.

We’ve named them Smoky.

Right now, Smoky is safe, warm, and finally able to rest after what must have been a terrifying experience.

Moments like this matter.

Not just because a life was saved, but because someone stopped in the middle of everything else going on… and chose to care.

Thank you, Officer Ashton, for seeing value in a small life and taking the time to act.

This is what compassion looks like.

Yesterday, I was on my way to watch my grandson play footy and finally see my daughter after a few weeks apart.

Up ahead, I saw a white ute swerve… straight into a flock of galahs.

I still don’t quite have words for that moment. It didn’t look like an accident.

By the time I reached them, his mate was already gone. This little one was still alive, injured and sitting by the side of the road.

So I pulled over.

Wrapped him in a towel and drove straight to the vet.

He’s got a head injury, but he’s alive. And now he’s safe, warm, and being cared for while he recovers.

I don’t know if he’ll make a full recovery yet. I hope he does.

But yesterday was a reminder of something simple:
We get to choose how we move through the world.

Some people cause harm without a second thought.
Others stop.

If you see something, do something. Even the smallest act of care matters.

Heartbroken by the continued destruction of native habitat in our Adelaide Parklands. Every tree removed, every habitat disturbed, means more injured, orphaned and displaced wildlife needing rescue and care.

Volunteer wildlife carers already work around the clock with limited resources, yet decisions like this will place even greater pressure on the very people trying to protect what little habitat remains.

We stand ready to help the animals that will inevitably suffer as a result, but we should never have been put in this position in the first place. Native wildlife deserve better. So do the volunteers carrying the burden of these decisions.

Today was one of those days that makes every kilometre worth it.

Two of our rescued geese climbed into the car for the next chapter of their lives, while we travelled miles to collect two more needing help before continuing on to their forever home.

A five-hour round trip.
Tired eyes. Full hearts.

And then came the moment that reminds you why rescue matters.

The gates opened.
Wings stretched.
And one by one, they stepped out into safety, freedom and a life where they will never again be unwanted or unsafe.

Watching rescued animals realise they are finally home is something impossible to fully explain. You feel it in your chest.

These are the moments your support makes possible.

Thank you to every person who follows, shares, donates, transports, encourages or simply cares. You are part of every happy ending we get to witness.

Please share to help more animals find safety and forever homes. ❤️🪿

Hand raised by humans, many domestic and non-native birds are suddenly released into the wild with no idea how to survive there.

No parents to teach them how to forage.
No instinctive fear of predators.
No understanding of roads, dogs, fishing lines, toxins or people who may harm them.

One day life is safe and predictable. The next, it is terrifying.

Some are injured. Some are neglected. Some are deliberately harmed. Many are simply discarded when they become inconvenient.

And yet, despite everything, they still trust.

At Elwood Sanctuary, we see the value in every single life. Whether native or non-native, frightened or broken, they deserve compassion, safety and a chance to heal.

These birds are not pests to us. They are living creatures trying to survive a world humans created for them.

Your support helps us provide food, medical care, rehabilitation and safe housing for vulnerable birds that otherwise would have nowhere to go.

Because kindness should never depend on species.

Same space… completely different world.

From a simple aviary to full-blown playground magic ✨
Climbing, swinging, exploring and a whole lot of happy chaos.

This is what enrichment looks like 💚
