Case of the Week: Terry-basil's sudocrem poisoning

2 year-old Terry-basil had been in and out of the vets repeatedly in his short life to try and control his skin allergies. This week however his owners noticed he was unusually quiet and lethargic. They brought him in to see Lizzie who noticed immediately his gums were very pale.

Bloods tests confirmed Terry was very anaemic, and he was admitted to the hospital. Several tests were performed which ruled out common causes of anaemia. Terry had not been exposed to anything toxic, though his owners had been using sudocrem for the past few weeks to try and ease his itchy skin. Lizzie started to wonder, could this be the cause??

Sudocrem contains zinc oxide, which is toxic in high doses. Sure enough a special blood test confirmed Terry's zinc levels were a whopping 5x higher than they should be!! Luckily once the sudocrem was removed from Terry's daily routine his anaemia improved, and he was discharged after 48 hours.

This is a really unusual case, and things could have been very serious for Terry if he'd been left longer. We feel it's important to stress that we do use sudocrem in the hospital as it is safe on the skin, but it's imperative to prevent pets licking it off. Surprisingly we have never seen a case of toxicity before - Terry's owners have very kindly let us tell his story in the hope it may save another dog from a similar fate, and are happy for his story to be shared to reach as many pet owners as possible. We are delighted that Terry is making a great recovery :)

This is from my fb memories, but really important to know. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/pTHAgaZV3c9m146Y/?mibextid=w...

(19) Blue Cheese
A favourite food around Christmas time, blue cheeses such as Stilton and Gorgonzola are very popular choices. Many of these 'blue-veined' cheeses contain a natural substance known as Roquefortine C; a by-product of the fungi that creates the 'blue' appearance. Dogs are particularly sensitive to the Roquefortine
C causing muscle tremors and seizures which can last for up to two days. Keep these blue cheeses away from animals this Christmas and pick up any dropped pieces.
