Our first BARK University Fit Dog Hike was soooo much fun! It was a little hot, but we took plenty of breaks to play in the streams along the way.
Keep an eye out for our next Hike, we will definitely be doing this again! 🐕

Throw back to Stewart's Private Training Session, where we worked on his 'Wait' command. Stewart was a notorious counter surfer at home!
We worked on teaching Stewart some impulse control so he doesn't run up and eat every piece of food he sees or that you happen to drop. We also taught him that he gets lots of value from paying attention to me instead of staring at the food.
Remember to build value in the behaviors you want your dog to repeat! Solving issues such as counter surfing takes time and consistency in the home.

Trainer Tip Tuesday: Introducing Recall to Puppies!
One of the best commands to teach your puppy is a solid recall, but a lot of puppy parents don't even know where to start. For all dogs, but especially puppies, you want to make sure everytime the dog comes to you (Even if they initially blew you off) make sure to reward them.
Coming back to you should always be a positive experience and you always want to build value in your puppy coming back to you. Puppies at a young age love to naturally chase you, use this to your advantage!

What's exactly happening here?
We're using minimal verbal communication for this exercise. You can see the dog's goal is to get the treats, but they have to figure out how to get them exactly...
I let them problem solve here! Let your dog use its brain and figure out what behavior is going to get them the treat. If the dog goes to grab the treat, I simply cover the treats with my hand. The dog learns here, "If I try to grab the treat, my access to the treats get taken away." So this behavior will not work. You can see the dogs testing this several times by trying to quickly grab at the treats as I uncover them.
Once the dog figures out this method won't work, they eventually try a new behavior. For most dogs this is to sit and wait. When they do this. I pick up a treat and deliver it to them one by one. The dog learns here, "If I sit and wait, I will get a treat."
You can see they test a few more times before it really starts to click! At the end, I'm able to leave the treats uncovered without they diving for them!

Levels Training Classes are our small group training classes designed to offer a flexible schedule to pet parents to come and learn basic obedience and manners in public!
We focus on teaching owners and dogs how to work around other dogs and humans while focusing on their handler.
