Today was another productive day! Coco’s puppies - we charged up our cue. Pretty much meaning we clicked and rewarded and get them used to the sound and register it as a positive sound. The puppies had 2 sessions of this with a break in the middle. This will be our base for future training. Their confidence is still building but I can see massive growth day by day with these guys!Roxy’s puppies - we started some more formal crate training. They all did amazing at this exercise! Whether families choose to continue with crate training or not, teaching a puppy the skill of being on their own in a calm and confident way is so so important for preventing separation anxiety. We put each puppy individually in the crate with a high reward treat (we used chicken necks). Before the puppies come to a point of fussing or whining, we remove them from the crate. This builds a positive association with their crate and emphasises that it is a positive experience.Once the puppies reached 2minutes of enjoying their chicken neck in the enclosed crate, we removed them with the hopes of building up the time to 10minutes before they go to their new homes. Roxy’s puppies also had a nail clip today.
Today’s training for Roxy’s puppies was what is called ‘charging up a cue’. Each puppy had 2x 2min session.Essentially, we are training their brains to register the sound of the clicker as a positive thing. To do this, we simply ‘click and reward’. Young puppies learn the best with a short session time of 2minutes, then a break of at least 15 minutes, followed by another 2min session. As simple as it is, when they register the clicker as a reinforcement of praise, when it comes to future training we will be able to ‘click’ in the exact moment they do the behaviour we are training. For example, if we are toilet training- we would ‘click’ in the exact moment they are using the grass for toilet, and then follow up with a treat too. It helps the puppy understand why they are being rewarded. Sometimes with a delayed reward, a puppy may be confused as to what they are being praised for. Are they being praised for coming to you after being the toilet space or for doing their business on the grass?
