Play can be so rewarding to your dog and is a great way to show appreciation for good behavior from your dog.

To use play effectively check out these tips

1. Choose a small toy that can be hidden when you are asking for a behaviour and then quickly brought out when you're ready to reward your dog. Keep in mind that if the toy is too small it could be a choking hazard.

2. Keep this toy special by only bringing it out during training and then putting it away when you are done. If your dog doesn't have access to this toy all the time, they will be more eager to play with it.

3. Play with your dog for at least 20 seconds so that they get a solid reward for the behavior they have performed.

Does your dog like to play??

Embarrassed to go out walking? not sure what to do about your dog’s barking and lunging?

Here are 3 great tools to help you and your dog decompress after an incident:

1. Take a two day break from walking.

You may have heard that to be a good dog owner you must walk your dog every day. But, if your dog just had a particularly large outburst then they would actually benefit from a break from their triggers. Your dog is worked up and they need some time before being exposed to the things that cause them anxiety.

2. Teach and heavily reinforce relaxing behaviors.

Does your dog know how to relax? A lot of dogs need help in this area and can be taught to relax very easily. You can even put relaxing behaviors on cue with a little work! Relaxing behaviors look like:
lazily lying down or sniffing the ground with a low tail.

3. Tune up the basics.

There are a few basic behaviors that are foundational to building a strong connection with your dog when outside of your home. If taught in a positive way, it will build your dog's confidence and will give you some tools to engage your dog when you are out.

For reactivity, think:
look at me, sit, recall, down, loose leash walking and leave it.

Comment with 1 behaviour from the description above and I'll cover how to train the one that is mentioned the most!! 👇🏻

Do you know if your dog is reactive?

If the thought of taking your dog for a walk makes your stomach drop, you may have a reactive dog.

Embarrassing barking and lunging at triggers such as other dogs or people can cause a lot of commotion. Dog Reactivity is quite literally your dogs over reaction. It can be scary to you or others.

It can make you feel like something is wrong with you or your dog. It can be described as aggressive behavior, or over excitement.

The good news is (though undesirable) your dog is displaying canine behavior. And once you understand this behavior, you can help your dog to respond differently with positive training ❤️

What is your dog’s trigger(s)?
